Manilow: The Movie

Filed under: Music Minute > Film Flickers > Old People > Tom Hanks

wenn2279961bm.jpg

The wheels are in motion for what's sure to be a shiteous romantic comedy revolving around the song catalogue of Barry Manilow.

Single Cell and Playtone are collaborating on the project with Michael Stipe and Tom Hanks directly involved in production.

Apparently the film won't be a traditional musical a la Mamma Mia with the actors bursting into song at any given moment, but rather the plot is being compared to Love Actually with intersecting story lines between the characters.

The characters will all be old Manilow fans going to Las Vegas for a weekend to see the singer perform at Mandalay Bay.

His music will be played throughout the movie with a performance or two from Manilow himself, of course.

This is the first time Manilow has allowed his song catalogue to be used in a film.

Sounds HOrrendous!

Will U go see this movie?

I KNOW!! He's one of the Keebler Elves!!! A-HA!

  3. 3

    Hellz yeah!

  4. 4

    Sounds shite.

  5. 5

    Sounds great! Loved "Love Actually".

  6. 6

HOrrendous???? Perez, puhleez! I love Barry! Super excited. I am such a fanilow. xo

  7. 7

I probably won't see it, but give Barry a break. He's been entertaining us for years. Who doesn't sing along to Copacabana? Plus, have Tom and Rita ever put out a really crap movie? I can't recall one.

  8. 8

Sounds interesting! Are you crazy? Oh, did we mention Lady Gaga is in it? Then it will be Oscar material. A must see. Fabu, etc.

  9. 9

    clay aiken is that you????????????????????//

  10. 10

umm perezito, will you be playing Manilow?

  11. 11

    Barry, sweet talented Barry:
    Why so ashamed and closeted
    about your sexuality after
    all these years?
    I think your being authentic
in this area of your life
    will not only be freeing
    for you
    but will herald a resurgence
    in your popularity.
    Be strong, come out.

  12. 12

OH GEE PEREZ doesn't like Manilow! From some of the music you recommend to people I am not surprised. Manilow is as American as you can get without being an apple pie. GET WITH IT PEREZ. Take a break from all things Hispanic.

  13. 13

    Too much plastic surgery.

  14. 14

Barry Manilow has raised huge dollars for the Desert Aids Project in Palm Springs. He is considered a local hero and model citizen.

  15. 15

I hate Manilow music more than any other music on the face of this planet

  16. 16

Should have laid off the plastic surgery

  17. 17

I agree with Poindexter X - it's very painful to watch Barry, but maybe that's because I've been a fan since '75. Why do you hate him so much Perez?? Could it be that he's been entertaining nearly as long as your precious MJ, and hasn't OD'd? or pretended to "father" 3 kids who aren't really from his loins??
Sure, I'll go see it - simply because it sounds different - and, it's Barry…. When are they holding the auditions for the fans going to Vegas?? I'm there!

Oh BTW - he HAS had different parts of his 'catalog' in other movies - he was nominated for an Oscar for the theme from Foul Play (Goldie Hawn at her goofy best…), and I've lost count how many times Copacabana has been used in movies….. RESEARCH before you start hating on someone, hon.. :)

  18. 18

JC Perez. It sounds great or would you rather have another rendition of a freakin' comic book on screen. More original than most plots I've seen out so far.

  19. 19

STEP OF PEREZ: Manilow Rules ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. 20

We'll DEFINITELY be seeing this! We're always up for a good musical…

  21. 21

    i'ma fanilow! stop hating, p!

  22. 22

he is gay. when will he come out of the closet?

  23. 23

    He grosses me out.

  24. 24

The movie sounds hysterical! My husband used to be a taxi cab driver in L.A. and one of his fares were three British women who had gone to L.A. just to see Manilow's house.

He's got fans (I.e. fanatics) all over the world!!!

  25. 25

I will absolutely see this movie. Quit being such a jerk! Barry has more entertaining talent than just about ANYBODY in the music industry!

  26. 26

Only planning to go if the theatre allows projectile vomiting.

  27. 27

Hell yea I'll go see it. Manilow rocks!

  28. 28

are the comments moderated here? Can't seem to leave one. If this one goes through, my answer was Hell Yea I'd go see this movie. Barry rocks!!

  29. 29

I absolutely would go see this movie. His music will last decades longer than the crap you keep promoting here.

  30. 30

Yes! I'll to see the movie WHEN PIGS FLY.

  31. 31

He is the best……will see it many times……seen Barry many times….love him!!!

  32. 32

i fucking love barry!! and his songs are amazing..im gonna go see it

  33. 33

Hey Perez, ya got the facts wrong: Manilow has had several songs used in movies before, most notably a song called "Ready to Take a Chance Again" in the movie "Foul Play" starring Goldie Hawn.

  34. 34

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
with yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
she would merengue and do the cha-cha
and while she tried to be a star
    Tony always tended bar
across the crowded floor, they worked from 8 til 4
they were young and they had each other
    who could ask for more?
At the copa (CO!) Copacabana (Copacabana)
the hottest spot north of Havana (here)
    at the copa (CO!) Copacabana
music and passion were always in fashion
At the copa…. they fell in love
    His name was Rico
    he wore a diamond
he was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancing there
and when she finished, he called her over
but Rico went a bit too far
    Tony sailed across the bar
and then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
there was blood and a single gun shot
    but just who shot who?
At the copa… she lost her love
Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl,
but that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
now it's a disco, but not for Lola,
still in dress she used to wear,
    faded feathers in her hair
she sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
she lost her youth and she lost her Tony
    now she's lost her mind
At the copa… don't fall in love
    don't fall in love

  35. 35

    Yupperdo!

  36. 36

    H,H,H,HEEELLLLL NO!

  37. 37

Wow, I'm not kidding, for a split second I thought that was Clay Aiken….or maybe I can just see into the future…Hm. I wonder if I can patent that?

  38. 38

I think I WILL see the movie….I know it may not be the most "popular" thing to say, but I like Barry's music and I love Las Vegas! So, it's a yes from me!!!!

  39. 39

I used to love his music when I was really young. But he just seems now to have a creeper vibe. Saw him interviewed a couple of times and he was just strange.

This isn't true Perez. A Manilow song was in the movie Foul Play with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn
