Watch & Listen: Just Work It Out!

| Filed under: Listen To ThisMayer Hawthorne

From his sweet falsetto to the soulful groove of the song, Mayer Hawthorne's Just Ain't Gonna Work Out sounds like it's straight out of the '70s.

If you like the Bee Gees or Robin Thicke, then you will LOVE this jam!

And we love love love it!

The video is just as sweet and charming as the song.

    I LOVE IT

Whoa! FREAKING AWESOME! Dude, you actually got one right for a change. However, I wouldn't compare him to the Bee Gees or Thicke. Maybe The Manhattans or Friends of Distinction or a 60's soul group. I like it alot!

    cute

Mayer Hawthorne is formerly known as DJ Haircut. He's from Ann Arbor, MI and is kind of hip-hop royalty in the Detroit area.

  15. 15

    LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Mayer Hawthorne is pretty awesome. He performed last week at Bumbershoot in Seattle, sung great live and I even got to take a picture with him. If you haven't listened to his record that was released this week you should definitely check it out. He's also just starting his US tour tour. I'd highly recommend you see him live.

The difference between this band and those Perez compares it to…well, the lead singers are actual singers and didn't attack a soul song with a weak, wavery falsetto. There's nothing soulful about a weak singer… it just sounds fake and badly matched.

Perez, you're insulting the 70s soul machine by likening this band to it. If you love music so much, why don't you actually listen to those that gave artists today their inspiration? My uncle had a "garage band" in the 70s, they focused on soul and r&b– and even with the crappy recording equipment they had, in a cement basement, they sound a million times better than this band.

  18. LeBon says – reply to this

    18

70s? It's obviously meant to sound like something from the 60s. And it doesn't sound anything like the Bee Gees or Robin Thicke either.

Re: LeBon – So true! Perez and his sister seem to only have an elementary level education in music. I'd say this is a lot closer to Curtis Mayfield than the BeeGee's! Too bad it's a weak homage to a great style! This Mayer guy is just o.k..

  20. 20

he goes off key in the song, it sucks

  21. 21

Well it's not bad but it doesn't really appeal to me that much.

  22. 22

Sorry. But WTF. It sounds horrible. I love the Bee Gees AND Robin Thicke A LOT. This sounds nothing like them. It sounds like my dad trying to hit high notes while singing to a song in the car. Not cool.

  23. 23

thats an insult to the bee gees and robin thicke, i thought i sang bad. this guy is terrible.

  24. 24

I like his voice. It's not the best falsetto I've ever heard. The video is hockie, corny. But all in all the song isn't bad. I can see him doing something way better if he hooked up with a producer that could steer him in the right way. He's got a good soul beat.

  25. 25

    Looooooove it!!!!!

  26. 26

You compare this guy's voice, to Robin Thicke and the Bee Gee's!?!?!? Check your ears Perez! His falsetto is making my ears bleed, actually doesn't even deserve to be called falsetto, it's complete shit. Perez, stay away from music cuz you don't shit about it.

  27. 27

    Hey, Mr. Music Executive/Expert:
    1. The song is completely derivative and unoriginal.
    2. It has more of a 60s vibe than 70s.
    3. His voice is not so great.
    4. Sounds nothing like Bee Gees or Thicke.

  28. 28

    sounds like neither of them

  29. 29

    The Music-Mogul strikes again…
    .
this is not the 70s, it´s the 60´s you stupid dumbfuck.
    .
AND: the music has so much to do with the Bee Gees like you with a straight man - nothing.
    .
    you make me sick

  30. 30

PAINFUL!! The dude CAN NOT sing. Absolutely horrible, screechy voice.

  31. 31

i have to say i love your taste in music!! the first time i ever heard about MIA was from you. You couldn't have described who would like this artist and song any better…..i love music and love hearing about new artists..thank you!
