Hollywood Weighs In On Ellen's Move To Idol
Everyone has an opinion on the news that Ellen DeGeneres is the new judge replacing Miz Paula Abdul on American Idol. Of course, no one is more vocal than the industry itself, so we thought we'd take a looksie at what some people are saying around Hollywood.
First, it's best to hear what the people who have to actually work with her think, like Randy Jackson, who was quoted saying:
"[Ellen] can be the voice of the people among us. I think between me, Simon and Kara [DioGuardi], there's enough musical experts to go around right there."
Then, of course, there are her comrades in the reality TV show judge game, like Sharon Osbourne, who exclaimed:
"She will be a breath of fresh air on that show, a complete breath of fresh air. It's new blood. And [American Idol] needed something new to happen."
Not everyone is as thrilled though. Some critics are confused over the choice and uncertain of it's success, like James Hibberd of The Hollywood Reporter, who wrote:
"Signing DeGeneres is a good get for Fox … and an odd choice for 'Idol.' Being an 'Idol' judge means taking quite seriously a show that is, in some respects, overstuffed and absurd. It's tough to predict how DeGeneres' humor will mesh with that."
And Michael Slezak from Entertainment Weekly wrote:
"I can’t shake the deep fear that American Idol is adding cream puff to the menu when we really need some bitter lemon."
But of course, there really is only one opinion that matters…OURS! And we say:
"Whosever idea this was deserves a HUGE pay raise! Inspired choice."

Paula never gave harsh critiques so she couldn't be considered a critic. So there is no way that Ellen's opinions could be more cream puffy than Paula's. What this makes me hope for is that if Ellen works out they will dump Kara next year. I don't know what it is about her, but she is like nails on a chaulkboard.
I think Dykegenerous will do great, I love her, she is funny and she knows how to talk to people. I think she will be the most popular judge by the end of the season.
I can't stand Ellen DeGeneres humor. She is a nice looking person but her humor is annoying. I won't be watching Idol if she's on it.
i don't get it. what value does she add to the show except for maybe some laughs. does she have music expertise like simon, randy and kara? ok..she likes music and likes to dance. seems like a weird choice to me.

You know, I have been thinking the same thing about all those posts about Kate Gosslin. They sound too much like they were written by some man hating bitter old woman. I'm guessing he hired some relative or friend to ghost write.
Paula has a warm heart, but did'nt make a whole lot of sense, sometimes. She would be great on Dancing With The Stars. I wish her well. I really am looking forward to Ellen on American idol. She is always positive and funny. This should help "lighten-up" things for the contestants, who are under alot of stress. Perfect choice, in my opinion.

I stopped watching Idol years ago.. but now I might start again. Just because I love Ellen.
I dont even WATCH that stytshow after the first two weeks. You already know who the top three will be by then. I WILL watch now because Ellen makes me LMFAO!! Just to see her facial expresions and how she'll react to something not so good is reason enough to watch it.

We'll see. If she can't tell if a singer is on pitch or not her opinion is worthless. All this "voice of the people" stuff is crap, when folks should be watching to see who is excellent, not who is popular. But who knows! She's a delightful person and maybe she'll be great. I'll miss Paula.

I think it makes absolutely no sense to put Ellen on that show. She's great and all but she doesn't give relevant insight which is important. Her gig at SYTYCD was pointless and she didn't say anything constructive other than "oh I loved it!" "oh it was well danced" If she disagreed she proably did because he followed what the judges said. I'm sorry but the voters more than enough of 'the people's voice' what we need is a person who knows what they're talking about, like Simon.
While I love Ellen, I do believe she will last one season and then be gone. She will be the Dennis Miller of Idol. Not going to work, I can speak for myself, I don't need her to do it.
Howard Stern hit the nail on the head, as usual. His two complaints were valid. One: she is in no way connected to music or the music industry, at any level. Two: She is a self-involved narcissist who is more concerned with making the judging about herself and her lame jokes than the contestants. And he played a clip from her guest judging on a dance show to prove it.
With the addition of Ellen, American Idol has truly jumped the shark.
I can't wait to see how Ellen is on Americal Idol.

Why Ellen DeGeneres Is Wrong for 'American Idol'
When the news broke last night that Ellen DeGeneres would be replacing Paula Abdul as a judge on 'American Idol,' my reaction was … what a terrible idea.
Don't get me wrong: Love Ellen DeGeneres. Love her. She is a wonderful and engaging host, comedian and entertainer. But she's completely wrong for 'Idol,' and here's why …
She has no credibility
Ellen appeared as a guest judge this past summer on 'Idol's' Fox sibling, 'So You Think You Can Dance.' And though Ellen had no dance experience, it seemed like it'd be a fun fit. Nope. Her stand-up shtick stood out like a sore thumb amid panelists who actually knew what they were talking about. Ellen's comments ended up being superfluous and unwelcome. We can poke fun at Paula's music "career," but at the end of the day, she was a pop star. Ellen might be "one of us" (the audience), but insightful critique from industry insiders is the reason there are judges at all.
She's too nice
Back when Paula announced she was leaving, we argued that she was taking the show's heart with her. Ellen's got plenty of heart, but I can't see her being as discriminating as even Paula (who always had her favorites, like David Archuleta or Danny Gokey). And then, if Ellen does tread into Simon Cowell territory, she risks damaging her sunny, always-upbeat, non-'Idol' image. Again, witness her stint on 'SYTYCD,' where she slobbered over every single performance. Liking everything isn't helpful.
She's not a trainwreck
Of all the guest judges 'Idol' trotted out for the auditions, the one we were most excited about was actually Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham, because she had the most potential to fill that trainwreck void Paula left behind. Let's face it: Many memorable moments from past seasons involved Paula's wacky behavior. Ellen will never do anything crazy enough to talk about at the watercooler in the morning. We already have two boring judges in Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi; let's not add another.
She'll steal the spotlight
It's the singing, stupid. Sure, we love the scandals, the trainwrecks, the Simon-Ryan homoerotic banter. But at the end of the day, the reason we all watch 'American Idol' is to see stars being born. Now that such a big personality is part of the show, will the spotlight move away from the stage to the judges' table? Ellen already has a show; leave this one to the Kris Allens and Adam Lamberts of the future.
