Patrick Swayze Memorial Held In Dirty Dancing Town

Tucked away in North Carolina is the small town of Lake Lure where Patrick Swayze once twirled Jennifer Grey around the dance floor.
The town served as the setting for Dirty Dancing and in remembrance of the great man and actor, the town is planning a memorial to celebrate Patrick Swayze.
On Saturday, the town will honor him with a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Firefly Cove, recognizable to fans as Camp Chimney.
The service is free, but visitors will be asked to donate to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Sounds like a wonderful way to remember a wonderful man.

LAKE LURE, N.C. — The residents of Lake Lure are planning a memorial service for Patrick Swayze, the star of "Dirty Dancing," which was filmed in their western North Carolina community.
Swayze died Monday evening after a 20-month fight with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
The town of Lake Lure will remember Swayze during a memorial service at 7 p.m. Saturday at Firefly Cove, a housing development that was Camp Chimney Rock when "Dirty Dancing" was filmed.
Many of the film's outdoor scenes were filmed there, as was the cabin of Johnny Castle, Swayze's character.
Although the service is free, visitors will be asked to donate to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
The movie was released in 1987.

Re: Lisa W a Lil L – The lake scenes were filmed in Lake Lure. I think it was fall and the water was super cold. They painted the leaves on the trees green for it. Everyone in Lake Lure and nearby Chimney Rock claims to own the coke cooler from the movie. So Perez is correct. For giggles you should look up Chimney Rock mountain… ha ha ha… I'm sure Perez would be amused by it.

Filmed BOTH places. The water, steps, golf course and steps Baby climbed are in NC. The main building, Baby's cabin, gazebo, some meal scenes, etc. are at Mountain Lake near Blacksburg - Giles County, VA.

Wow, I've only lived in NC for a few years and I have never heard about this place or its connection to the movie but I think it warrants a visit. RIP, Patrick. I bet he's still dancing in the afterlife!!
Lake Lure is beautiful. I have been there several times. I took a cruise past where the hotel was that was in the movie…it had burned to the ground twice.

Wasn't filmed in NC - it was filmed in Virginia, at a resort called Mountain Lake.
I'm from the town 25 mins from Lake Lure… the big white steps that she does "Wipeout" on was filmed in Lake Lure, you can still see them there. Been there many times.
I live 25 miles from Lake Lure in Asheville, NC. It is definitely where parts of Dirty Dancing were filmed, including the big white stairs where Baby practices to the song Wipeout. Those are still there.

The film was filmed at Mountain Lake in Blacksburg, VA. Maybe scene was shot in NC, but if you have ever been to Mountain Lake you would see that it is the location. The hall where the "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" is about as big as my livingroom. Really cool place that you can rent the cabins out and hold events in the mountains.

My mother and her husbands investment guy came to them years ago about investing $ 50,000 dollars in a movie called Dirty Dancing. They said no because they didn't know who Patrick Swayze was. Boy are they kicking themselves.

I met him once when I worked at the Planet Hollywood in Myrtle Beach, SC. He was one of the nicest people that I had ever met! I will truly miss him and hope that he rests in peace. My condolences go out to his family in their time of need!
I will always remember him as Johnny Castle! He was a wonderful actor and was one of the nicest people that I had ever met!
