Nigerian Officials Ban District 9!
They have bigger problems!
According to Nigeria's Information Minister Dora Akunyili, the country will boycott summer blockbuster District 9 due to the negative portrayal of its inhabitants.
"We have directed that they should stop public screening of the film," she said of the movie theaters in Abuja. "We are not happy about it because it portrays Nigeria in bad light."
The sci-fi morality film shows Nigerians as gangsters and cannibals while the leader of the clan closely resembles former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. He is seen cutting off and eating the arm of the film's main character, in an attempt to gain his supernatural powers. Also, Nigerian prostitutes are seen pleasing alien customers.
Could the writing be symbolic of African politics? Fixed elections, wild theories on avoiding AIDS and a government plagued by self interest?!
"We have written to the producer and distributor of the film, Sony Entertainment, expressing our displeasure and demanded an apology," said the Minister. "We have asked that the areas where Nigeria and Obasanjo are mentioned should be edited from the film."
Fat chance!
District 9 is already pushing buttons as it closely mirrors South African apartheid!
And the opposition has banned together to form Nigerians Offended by District 9, which offers all of 57 members!
Maybe they should spend more time improving the country and less time worrying about some movie!

Nothing new here. The WP have consistantly fed false views of Africa to the public for ages now. I think it's really sad and people need to have respect for other cultures and stop exploiting people.
This movie was fucking brilliant! Very touching and thought provoking. And you are right perez, they got bigger things to worry about than this movie. Any country they would have filmed in would have used the locals as prostitutes. Get over it. Genius film. Sorry for those who didn't get it.

any movie that creates conflict is a good movie in my opinion. i thought it was great. besides… the director of the film grew up in that area and said the film included many comparisons to what was going on in africa. if they dont like it.. then fucking change it. dont bitch about whats true.

The director is actually a really nice guy, and he wrote the film based on growing up in the area and the main actor is from there as well..oh, and also the film is about aliens. therefore its not meant to be completely true and people need to stop taking things so seriously!

Dear God this is THE worst movie I have sat through. I actually wanted to leave, but went with my family. It was boring & predictable. Do NOT waste your money!
A very compelling movie. Very much worth seeing - but only if you have a brain and an imagination. Clearly many denizens of this site do not qualify.

I personally thought this movie was brilliant. There have been tons of films that cast the people of foreign countries in a poor light, and they were not half as farfetched as this one. I mean, it's about aliens. For once, I agree with you Perez - they should concentrate more on helping their own country and not what the film industry is doing.

I thought it was a bad portrayal of humanity in general. They made it seem like no one as pro-alien and its government was anti-alien…I really don't see, unless the aliens were aggressive, people would be anti-alien. I think the only reason why the government was so evil in the movie is that they made the people seem greedy on the technology the aliens had.

No wayzzz!! People should stop being narrow-minded and look at the BIGGER picture… It's abstract and universal… brilliance in no way that other dared to think of..
This film's theme is more insulting to the U.S. than any country. Anyone who "got" the film can see that.

Yeah, that was the point. It was a portrayal of what is going on in Iraq right now and seizing "weapons of mass destruction for safety" but really using them to gain control and manipulate another population and drive them further into poverty with no means to defend themselves. Its a political movie.

Anyone who knows anything about South African history knows that it is a reference/parallel to District 6 which was an area in Cape Town where "colored" black Cape Malay and Indians lived and were relocated to an area called the Cape Flats because the whites wanted District 6 for their own.
