Ouch!!! Thank goodness the CW has The Vampire Diaries.
CW staples One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl took a severe hit in the ratings this week, according to Mediaweek. The second episodes of both series fell, on average, by 42% from last year!
Not good!
Hopefully, the addition of Hilary Duff later on will help the ratings for GG. Unfortunately, we see no help in sight for One Tree Hill. That shit-show should have ended 3 years ago.
Better start watching if you want to keep your shows on the air!

Well in Canada the stupid show is NEVER consistent with the airing times!!! On week its on at 9, the next its on at 8, sometimes its not on at all. I MISSED this weeks ep because I sat down to watch it at 9, and they had changed the time. They need to get their shit together cause its no wonder why ratings get lower ghez
I love both shows but CW's problem is that most of their target audience is University students who can't afford the digital cable/satellite to get that network! Instead, they watch it online which means shitty ratings.

These ratings do not count for anything, people are watching their favorite shows online now or with DVR or TiVo.

I blame the ratings on Hockey Season.. I couldnt get onto my TV to watch Gossip Girl last night because of my Boyfriend.. But I did PVR it and I am watching GG tonight.
I couldn't bear to watch OTH this season because last season was so awful. I've never been a GG fan. I really like the direction they're taking 90210 this season. Hopefully they'll cancel Melrose Place soon though!
gossip girl is one of the best shows on tv. why arnt people in the US watching it. im from the uk and make the effort. i dont want it to be cancled just because of ratings in the US.

I don't love either of these shows but you're not being fair about your reporting. You have to remember that these 2 shows fall on Monday Night Football. Which is a large chunk of the viewing audience. I know you may not like these 2 shows but please do not fall into the traps of other media like fox news and MSNBC which fails to report all aspects of comparisons!
The first episode of Gossip Girl was pretty bad, the second one last night was a slight improvement

but one tree hill, which is my favorite show, was pretty bad. i dont like what they are doing with the nathan storyline. i really hope it gets better soon…

Alright so I signed up today just so I could comment on this.
Perez seriously you bash way too many things, and I'm so happy you got hit for it. Have you ever even watched One Tree Hill? It's a simple show that is underrated. Not enough people watch the tv show anymore, and some " loyal " fans quit because their beloved Lucas and Peyton were gone. Cry me a river. The show is GREAT with them, and great without them.
The real fans know whats up and know how good of a television show it is. They new characters are good, and it makes me really upset to see the rankings like this down 42% , but that doesn't make the show bad. And One Tree Hill shouldn't have stopped three years ago, I think you bashing on Miley Cyrus should have stopped three years ago. These shows shouldn't be on the CW, or the CW should move to cable. Most people who watch this channel are younger audiences who don't have digital cable & it's unfortunate. One Tree Hill went a bit downhill during season 6, but this season so far is just like all the others, fantastic. New characters, new unseen drama, with the same great characters as always, as well as some new ones too.
I blame its demise on Chad Michael Murray for quitting the show. And Hilarie Burton had to leave with him, and it's upsetting but the new One Tree Hill is revamped and fabulous. One Tree Hill has always been known as the little show that could, because it never got press like Gossip Girl or The OC, and it's not just about spoiled little rich kids living in the richest cities. It's easier to relate to it than those types of shows. Monday Night football fucked everything up from what everyone is saying, but I know so many people that watch One Tree Hill online and own the box sets but can't watch it because they don't have the station. There are 132 episodes of One Tree Hill and I've seen each at least 20 times. Some more, some less. That means since I've started watching it I've spent like 3 months straight worth of hours watching it. Which means around 132000 minutes, or 2200 hours, or 92 days. This is what a true fan looks like. No XOXO for you, Perez.

Hey Perez! In South Florida, they did not broadcast these shows last night, they broadcasted the NFL Dolphins game isntead.
If they did the same in other states, that might explain the downturn in the viewership

One Tree Hill is honestly an amazing show with some incredible writers from what I can tell. Ive been a fan for about four or five years now. You should try actually watching the shows before you talk crap about them Perez. And people are watching a lot online nowadays.

OTH technically got 2.48 and they rounded up to 2.5. GG, by comparison, got 2.09 and they rounded up to 2.1. OTH had the same ratings as last week, and GG dropped.
Whether the ratings are good or bad depends on what you’re looking at: Are you comparing it to this time last year? Or are you comparing it to last season’s average? Or are you comparing it The CW’s average for all its shows? Or you comparing it to the new shows? Or are you comparing it to the other networks?
Right now, OTH is on par with last season’s average but lower than last season’s 2nd episode. It is certainly lower than Vampire Diaries and significantly lower than the other networks.
It all depends on what you’re looking at. And remember, this doesn’t include iTunes downloads, illegal downloads or 7-day DVR ratings. The CW looks at all these things in determining a show’s worth, but next-day reports usually don’t consider these things.
You can argue, given all that, OTH is doing perfectly fine for The CW for now. There's nothing to be alarmed about. GG, on the other hand, had a disappointing drop. Still, it’s what comes in the next few months that will be really telling.
Regardless, it's not a reason to bash either show. But to follow your mentality, in my opinion, the shit-show that is PerezHilton.com should have ended 3 years ago.
Well honestly in my case I don't like being told what to like. It seems like everything nowadays is so sanitized and they push it so hard. I miss Dawson's Creek etc. The 90's were just so much more fun

The CW is a broadcast channel, not a digital or cable one. It is considered to be one of "The Big 5" just like ABC, NBC, etc. It is the smallest of them and does the worst, but the same nonetheless.
While every market usually has ABC, NBC, etc., when UPN and the WB ended, affiliates got to decide whether to carry The CW. Many chose not to. So if The CW isn't offered in your area, it has nothing to do with cable or digital. Your affiliate just chose to carry it. And that definitely impacts the ratings.
Monday Night Football matters only in that it's a popular program, taking away viewers, just like House did and does. But South Florida getting MNF instead of OTH and GG means nothing. That one region is not going to significantly impact or make or break the ratings, so while it sucks people in that area didn't get to see it, it really doesn't matter in terms of ratings.
Ep. 2 of gossip girl had me "OH NO SHE DIDN'T" -ing the entire time. Seriously why aren't people watching? whats wrong with them?!

One Tree Hill was shiteous last week! I downloaded this week's episode and I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch the horribleness of that show! Gossip Girl is good, as always, though.

well.. i can't stand one tree hill.. i think it has horrible acting and shitty story lines, but i am a HUGE fan of GG. This season though, I tuned in to watch it at its usual time (8pm) and it was switched to 9pm…. so now i keep for OTH .. im surprised that show lasted as long as it has.
Gossip Girl was so terrible last night…SUPERNATURAL blows all these shows out of the water and yet its marketed terribly..so lame!!!
Its the CW, and by CW standards the ratings for GG have been okay, higher than some of the S2 episode's anyway. Vampire Diaries? Have you watched that show? Slowest moving plot ever, they gave everything away in the promo's over the summer.
Its more thank goodness for Supernatural and Smallville, those are there highest rated shows.

OTH isnt airing in the GTA anymore, SUN TV took it off their schedule so that could explain some of the drop. Perez, just cause YOU dont like a show doesnt mean it isnt good. YOU have pretty SHITTY taste if you ask me.
and just because YOU don't like the show, doesn't give you the right to bash it or try to influence peoples decisions of watching that show. if they read you don't like it, they may decide not to watch it. which they are missing out. it has good music and the writers are brilliant. i don't like that sliimy or whatever his name is. but it doesn't mean that other people cant like or listen to him

I watch supernatural. Vampire diaries is kinda like a boring version of twilight. I use to watch GG and OTH but now I watch CBS-accidently on purpose(funny) and tonight The good wife comes on. So ready for that.
Well A LOT of new shows debuted last night so I'm not surprised GG and OTH took a dive in the ratings.
The CW kept on freezing while I was trying to watch it so I turned it off. Maybe it had problems everywhere

Gossip girl always suffered with ratings but was their number 1 downloaded show on the CW website all of last year. So sorry to disappoint you gossip girl bashers but GG isn't going anywhere. One tree hill is amazing too but I kinda fell out and quit watching it as much. Last season was also their slowest season but still the writers are really great and so are the actors and actresses. And doesn't Time Warner not have the CW so all those customers can't watch Gossip Girl? I think that was the rumor last year but I'm not sure what happened with that. I love GG though and always will! Vampire Diaries is sort of off to a slow start but it might get better, it's a hell of a lot better than Buffy was, which I barely watched anyway because that show wasn't very good.
I am disappointed in OTH, but I love GG. I hope that the ratings will go up for GG.

They really need to start taking downloads of shows into ratings consideration, I download all my TV and last night Gossip Girl's new episode had 10,000 downloads! 10,000 views which are not included in the ratings even though they should be.
I'd totally watch Gossip Girl if it was NOT on Monday. House, Heroes, & CSC Miami = SO MUCH BETTER!

and 42% my ass! where the hell did you get that statistic? on average, the highest rating for the last season gossip girl was like 3.5 million or something and that was for episode 3, episode 25 got like a 2.4 or something.
one tree hill has always been a solid 2.5-3 so it is not much of a decrease.
