Sydney Sky Turns RED!!!!

People in Sydeny, Austraila woke this morning to see a deep reddish haze unlike anything they have ever seen before. And weather experts are amazed as well!
But how can this be?!
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Jane Golding says that the color comes from an exorbitant amount of dust that has collected in the area, saying:
"The reason for the dust is we had some really strong winds in the inland areas of NSW and in South Australia for a sustained period yesterday. That's lifted a whole lot of dust off the ground because it's quite dry out there, many of those areas are still drought affected…I've not seen anything like this before."
She also pointed out that the reddish haze is expected to fade as the sun gets higher in the sky, changing from "a crimson red to orange by about 7am."
A severe weather warning has gone out across the city, as the dust has made visibility terrible and the winds carrying this reddish dust are as high as 60km/h and expected to get worse!!!
This is just crazy! It looks like the "end of days" over there!!!

Yes its Sydney…and looking out my 30th floor building in the CBD of Sydney at the moment and its 8.30am…it still looks like Mars out there!!! Its so dusty…its kind of freaky. Nothing like that has ever happened here before…well…not in my life time.

LOL…i woke up this morning and thort something in my room was on fire…so im crawling around in the dark checking the electrical stuff but everything was fine…but then i looked out the window and realised to smokey smell was coming from outside bcoz i left my balcony doors open all night…the sky was blood orange and smokey…i thought the whole city was on fire or something…it was awsome…ahahaaa…i thort it was the end of the world…xcept now my room is must b full of dust bcoz i cant breathe properly in here…*coughs*…

I'm in Newcastle, 2.5hours north of Sydney and it's amazing. it's so thick, I've never seen anything like it. You can't breathe though, it's scary

Yeah it's crap everything is covered in dust and it smells dusty and my car is no longer white it is brown. This has never happened before in my lifetime. I woke up at 6am and it was no longer red it was more of an orange colour. Wish I saw it red though.

Just so you know, it's not just affecting Sydney. I live a few hours north and woke up this morning thinking my house was on fire because my room was glowing orange! My car is covered in red dust. It's insane.
i live right near the city in tempe and my dad woke me up at 6 and told me to look out the window . the sky was red it was so freaking i thought the world was ending lol . and on my way to work today there was dust everywhere .
and for everyone that thinks this is fake belive me its real and i whis it wasnt lol .

Re: Vexation – google it - totally true! i woke up at 6am this morning and it was more of a deep orange, but i seriously freaked out for a moment! i live about an hour north and we regularly suffer california-esque bushfires, so i was pretty worried until i turned on the news!
it's amazing though, people have so many great pictures, although my eyes are crazy itchy!

OMG this isn't edited or fake!! I woke up this morning at 6am I was coughing from the dust! And I was like WTFFF The sky was glowing red everything was red… It was like A dark sepia red photo it was red everything then by 7am turned orange, 8am yellow now it's 10am it just looks dirty! OMFG I thought I was gonna die!! Ahhhha

Yeah its freaky down here. I woke up with half of my apartment being orange, because i left some of the windows open. Major fail. But waking up at around 4am and not being able to see anything but red is trully weird.
I woke up to see the sky red. I had to open and close my eyes, I thought it was a dream. I ran to my Mum's room and asked "is it just me or is the sky red". I am an asthmatic, so thank goodness I am on Uni holidays and I can stay inside!

I woke up and it was bright orange, looked like Armageddon, its now a glowing yellow outside, and its 10:23 am….I'm guessing clear sky at 3pm.

Not telling me anything! I live in West Texas. This is a daily occurrence from around March through June, and sometimes in the fall as well. It looks like a martian landscape on the worst days.

ok….i'm in brisbane, and the sky is sort of an orange colour, even the smoke alarms at the shopping centre are going off, it's like thick smoke, but its not, it's haze… i live on acreage and i can't even see any trees at the back LOL..

I live in Brisbane, Australia and the dust just reached us, the sky is yellow and the sun is blue. Insane. Great though.
i live 2 hours from sydney and EVERYTHING was orange for hours. felt like we were living on the inside of a tictac box! everything smells like dust too, even inside the house

It's now 1.25pm in Sydney. It's windy, dust and very hazy. Nothing like breathing in a mouth full of dirt!
Its pretty much covering all of NSW. I live 5 and a half hours inland from Sydney and its like that here too. Thought my house was on fire when i woke up this morning.

YES! it has moved to Brisbane but it is not as bad here as Syd. It does smell slightly dusty but not too bad.

The weather channel man said it was about 600kms wide he said its going out to sea and might even get to nz…..he said sometimes our storms get there sometimes!

I'm in Brisbane and it's blowing over here now - not red like this though, more like a thick yellow fog. Not fun at all! For anyone that's interested, go to Youtube and search for "broken hill dust storm" - it's video footage of the sky turning BLACK yesterday afternoon when the storm first blew up and started moving east. Incredibly scary!
