Mackenzie Phillips' Stepmother Speaks!
The shocking story of Mackenzie Phillips' incestuous relationship with her father has had many people coming forward in either defense or anger towards the actress.
One such person in dismay over her allegations is her former stepmother, Genevieve Waite. She released a statement directly to the Oprah Winfrey Show after the show aired, denouncing Phillips' story:
"I am stunned by Mackenzie's terrible allegations about her father. I would often complain about her overly familiar attitudes towards him, and he said it was just her way. John was a good man. … He was incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, to have sexual relations with his own child."
Since John Phillips isn't alive to defend himself, there is no real way of knowing if Mackenzie is telling the truth. But what a terrible thing to live with if it is true and how hard it must be to share.

A daughter who makes statements against her father is bad, but so is a mother who defends her dead ex over her own kid. I am not picking sides here, just saying that it appears this girl had a beyond messed up life either way.
She didn't seem to have much difficulty sharing her story on Oprah. I cannot tell you how many times they repeated the books title and showed the book to the camera.

I hate it when people come forward with horrible stories about a person after they are dead. This woman is a former drug addict who is unable to find work. Her only means of support is selling her story. Nobody would read it if she didn't juice up the story. If it is true she should have kept it to herself or told her tale when her father was alive to defend himself.

She says it's to help others, but then why not just do the interview and not promote the book? It's also very convenient that this is all happening when her father is dead and therefore cannot tell his side of the story.

And I'm sorry but considering how much of a druggie and alcoholic he was, how would she know what he would and wouldn't do? You lose a lot of your inhibitions when you are that inebriated. Re: lizsmith – Have you ever thought about the fact that now that she is trying to stay clean all these memories are eating her up? That's why people start talking as they get older. I myself have been a victim of molestation and believe me, it's not something you ever forget. But if you don't talk about it….it will eat you up and that is more than likely the main reason WHY she turned to drugs for so much. I would too in her position. Part of writing a memoir is getting out ALL the memories…good or bad. So, that's what she did. And of course she will be interviewed and asked the hard questions. To say she is only doing this for $$ is wrong and insensitive. You have NO IDEA how hard it would be to tell that story on live tv. But at least she can now hopefully excise her demons and live a better life. Have some compassion.

Well I watched Oprah and she didn’t look like she was lying. I think her family needs to be there for her and try to figure out what the truth is. If she is telling the truth then they need to be there for her and help her heal. If they find out that it is not true then they still need to be by her side and get her some help.
It is impossible for a healthy, "whole" person to have a consensual sexual relationship with his/her parent. Mackenzie Phillips obviously participated in this relationship knowingly, but everything about her childhood and adolescence was skewed, twisted, and completely backwards. She, for lack of a better word, was programmed by her father to behave in a certain way and taught to accept things that were unacceptable. For anyone to blame her for what she did to cope with her family life, lack of being parented, etc., is heartless and shameful. Many unspeakable things happen behind closed doors in seemingly "normal" families every day. If this is the first time you've heard of such abuses, consider yourself lucky but don't visit your ignorance on the survivors of such horrors.

mhm, she was due to marry the next day. and if that didn't make her angry of this and stopped her from further sex with him, i don't know what could have. i believe her, but i can't immagine that a 19 year old, who already stood on their own feet, isn't able to stop stuff like this, but goes on living like this for another 10 years. we will never know the truth, as her father is dead - and to be honest: i don't care about the truth nor did i want to know about any of this. this is not a typical child abuse story, this is 100% weird. maybe she should've asked a shrink first before writing a book and using this very story to promote it.

Sadly, I believe her. Her own sister believed her. Her step-mom even admits that the daughter was overly close with her father. I don't believe in taking it to such a public forum, but that was her choice, probably guided by money.
