One of our absolute faves, international chart-topper Mika isn't really into labels, but he opens up about his sexuality in the Dutch magazine Gay&Night, out this week.
Here are some HIGHlights:
On his sexuality and labels:
As far as discussing sexuality and gender: listen to my songs. It's everywhere. Sexuality has kind of themed this record, if you have to think about it that way. That's part of growing up. I mean, I've never ever labeled myself. But having said that; Ive never limited my life, I've never limited who I sleep with…So, I don't know. Call me whatever you want. Call me bisexual, if you need a term for me…Apply that to me, if that's what you want. That's as close as I'll get to any label.
On being a role model for gay youth:
Well, look at the 14-year-old kids that are making their own videos to my song, the 12- and 13-year-old guys dancing around in their room. There are ways of being a role model without having to always establish yourself with a label…having a role model who makes you feel like it's all right to do whatever you want, without the pressure of a label, I think that's a good thing as well.On being sexually "free:"
Let's say if you're a 16-year-old guy, and you're not sure about your sexuality, you should be as free as you want. You shouldn't have to say I'm gonna label myself in order to figure out what is going to make me happy in life. That's the key to it. You don't have to pigeonhole yourself all the time. You shouldn't stick yourself into any kind of constraints or limitations at all.
And there you have it!
We're all free to do what (and who) we please!!

I love Mika and appreciate what he is saying but when discussing being sexually free and encouraging 16 year olds to do so, you must also mention being sexually safe while you figure things out. To leave out that aspect when you discuss this topic at such length is irresponsible…..Be free -figure things out-but be safe while doing it! Wear a condom.

i think that mika's stance is a good one…but by saying "and now we can all call him bi.." you somewhat negate and make unimportant what he actually said….why can't we just call him Mika and not worry about who he is having sex with….

Sexuality fluctuates along people´s lives, so I agree with Mika on this one. Being FREE as devoid of labels should be our aim. Calling ourselves HETERO, GAY, LESBIAN, TRANS is just a XIX century construct. Before the mindset of such century starting labeling behaviour and people according to such, people were basically what they were. There were pirate women disguised as men, there were men who lived as ladies and were only found out when they died, and men of all walks of life engaged in "sodomy".

He wanted people (sorry the media) to focus on his work, not "labels". That has been his answer the past couple years. I don't think it was being evasive, nor his bisexual answer now. The point is that the media and particuarly the AMERICAN culture needs to grow up. This doesn't matter to anyone under 30.
You could frown on this if he was someone who played macho, pretended to like women, or was overwrought (sues the media) at the question (I'm talking to you, Mr. Cruise), but Mika, even through his lyrics, hardly plays down his "gayness" (whatever that means).
And his answer was very much in line with Adam Lambert, so yes, Perez, you did not treat the two the same. You were unfair to Lambert. People could read between the lines on his first comments, it didn't need to be

I don't understand why Perez finds Mika refusing to come out acceptable, but was so quick to condemn Adam Lambert for not wanting a label. This is exactly why I stopped reading Perez for awhile. As a gay man, he should understand that the decision to come out is personal, and someone like Adam Lambert or Lance Bass doesn't need Perez attacking them in the media for deciding to keep it private. If Adam Lambert had said the same things Mika said in this article, Perez would have been all over it, calling him a closet case and saying he needs to come out…when really, that's not something anyone ever NEEDS to do if they're not ready. I really think it speaks to Perez's lack of credibility when he plays such obvious favorites with the people he writes about.
Where to slide the world? Mika has fallen a victim. If repeat to a person since the childhood that he is a tree, a person will believe and will consider itself as a tree. My sister all my life named me thick. I have believed. And how many I weighed, I shall consider myself thick. When Mika was a child!! (a child!), severe schoolmates offended Him naming the gay. What can know about it the normal child from cultural family ? Constantly humiliated child who did not trust that will live till twenty years…
Other ideas I shall hold at myself. I hope it is PR… advances with public… or is the correctness…desire to have fans of any layers of a society…or desire that all have lagged behind Him with similar questions once and for all.
