Public Outcry Urging Roman Polanski's Release

Despite his recent arrest while heading to Switzerland for the Zurich Film Festival, Hollywood and neighboring nations have rallied around Roman Polanksi in support of his release.
Really?!
French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner called the arrest of the director a "bit sinister".
The Swiss Directors Association believes that the sudden arrest is "not only a grotesque farce of justice, but also an immense cultural scandal" as authorities knew exactly where to find Polanksi, although Switzerland does not perform passport checks.
And his biggest supporter is famed movie mogul Harvey Weinstein!
"We're calling on every film-maker we can to help fix this terrible situation," said Weinstein, who is probably funding the director's next project.
A petition has even been signed by filmmakers and actors including Monica Bellucci and Fanny Ardant urging authories to release Polanski.
It has also been said that French President Sarkozy is following the case "with great attention".
Legal representatives for the director are set to challenge the arrest and any attempts to bring him to the United States.
Samantha Geimer, the victim of the case, has asked for the charges to be dropped as she has sued Polanski and reached an undisclosed settlement.

Regardless of how long it has been since the crime occurred, he should serve some time in prison. Even if he indeed settle out in court with this woman. Celebrities SHOULD NOT get special treatment. Do the crime do the time. And if he didn't know how old she was that was failure on his part to actually stop and get to know this person BEFORE having sex with them. No excuses!! To those saying the judge went back on the plea agreement, that is WRONG. The LAWYERS agreed that Polaski would undergo a 4m evaluation in a mental instituation, at the conclusion of which, they'd ask the judge to reduce the sentence or accept that as time served. At the end of the 4ms, the judge decided, AS IS THEIR RIGHT TO DO IN EVERY CASE!, that the 4m in the institution was not sufficient and ordered a sentencing hearing on the CRIME of DRUGGING, RAPING, and SODOMIZING the CHILD. Roman then fled, and his people and supporters claim it is because the judge is being unfair and went back on the plea bargain. This is to confuse the general public that JUDGES enter plea bargains at all - they don't. They CAN approve them, they can also call for greater - or lesser - punishment. This judge, RIGHTFULLY, believed Polaski deserved more than 4m of easy street (yes, there were pictures of him drinking and laughing while in the "hospital"). Hollywood and criminals can twist anythign to look favorable to them, but the bottom line is that this sick f*ck with a tragic history decided he was above justice and ran.

Before this rape accusation, I remember Polanski, being accused by two underage teenage girls of being sexually molested when they accepted a ride from Polanski in his car. The case never went to court.
What he did was extremely fucked up…. he did serve some jail time a long time ago when it first happened…. he should have accepted the consequences for what he did… I think he tried to initially, but it became a circus and Roman Polanski did get fucked over by the judge (no pun intended)…. he might earn some compassion from the public if he acknowledged how fucked it is to sleep w/ a 13 year old….. then again his wife was so brutally murdered he was probably 1/2 out of his mind… sad situation
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. If he had stuck with his guilty plea and done his time in jail he could've had a normal life once he was released. I have no sympathy for him.

When I was 13 I was well aware of what sex was. Even sexual attraction. This was the case for all of my friends.
Was it a big mistake for Roman to do what he did? Yes. Was it unacceptable behaviour? Yes, although let's not forget that the concept of age of consent being 16 and over is a very modern invention.
The problem is that really, the punishment at this point most likely won't fit the crime. He'll be used as an example which isn't really what the justice system should be used for, the sentencing should fit the crime and not the general population's idea of what the crime was (which in many cases is uninformed).
You also have to ask the question - is this man a threat to society? If the answer is no then the sentence should be adjusted accordingly. All those people in here who want him to 'rot in jail for life' and keep throwing the word 'pedophile' around make me worry about rational society. The justice system isn't for vengeance. It's for protecting citizens. Let us just bear that in mind.
