Did Carrie Underwood Plagiarize Her New Song?

| Filed under: Music MinuteCarrie Underwood

Apparently one of Carrie Underwood's songwriters met with country singer Brittany McDonald after hearing and loving her song Bang.

The meeting took place well before Carrie's new single, Cowboy Casanova, was written and recorded and now there is suspicion that the Idol alum's latest single is in fact plagiarized from McDonald!

And the two songs do sound similar!

They don't sound similar to me, it sounds like a singer wanting a big break trying to make something out of nothing!

  3. 3

    does someone really care?

  4. 4

99.99% of country music is relative. eugh.

  5. 5

i only heard the similarity in the beginning

  6. 6

sounds ripped off to me, SHAME

  7. 7

i care! but it really doesnt sound THAT similar. like an upbeat country song, how different can they really be after a while. carries is definitely better…brittanys doesnt sound as memorable to make it as a huge artist like carrie. YEAY

  8. kaya says – reply to this

All country songs sound similar anyway.

  9. 9

I guess they sound slightly similar , but not enough that it needs to be a big deal. Beyonces Halo anf Kelly Clarkson's Already Gone sound alot more similar!

  10. 10

NOT EVEN CLOSE - it's like saying Madonna copied Daft Punk…oh wait.

  11. 11

It is definitely very similar. And just because they changed the key and the lyrics and had the rhythm section kinda faded out, does not mean, the writers DIDN't get themselves "inspired" by the other song…..

  12. 12

Both sound exactly like every other country song out there. Who cares? NO ONE owns a drum beat, or guitar rhythm…if they did there would be about 15 songs out right now.

  13. 13

I don't think that you can call a similar drum beat the same song. Give me a break. I'm not even a country fan and I don't think that Carrie Underwood plagiarized.

  14. 14

I can see where the back beat is very similar, but the melody is completely different. it's a completely different song. this is silly.

  15. 15

I don't hear it…… They sound totally different!! That's like putting "2 Become 1" by the spice girls beside "Umbrella" by Rihanna and saying "OMFG ITS THE SAME SONG THEY'RE BOTH TALKING ABOUT LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMFG RIHANNA STOLE IT OMFG OMFG!!!" Just, no.

  16. 16

i can see where the back beat sounds similar. but the melody is completely different. that is redic. not to mention cowboy casanova is much better than bang.

  17. 17

"Plagarizing" something is to copy it. Being influenced by a song is totally different.

  18. 18

This is clearly a ploy to get people to listen to these songs…
It sounds more like a Pat Benatar song than the one aldegedly ripped off.

  19. 19

they do sound similar. ohh that sucks lol

  20. 20

Wow first off carrie looks UGLY in this photo. What's with the makeup and those lips ugh!! and second she is so unoriginal it's not even funny. Carrie is not the perfect little princess you think she is. She is a big bitch who think she is flawless and she totally ripped off the song.

  21. 21

First of all Carrie Underwood doesn't write her own songs, 2nd, it has a similar beat but the vocals are clearly different. In Nashville the same songwriter probably tweaked the same song and sold it to 2-3 different artists.

  22. 22

I think the two songs fall into the same musical category - country trying to sound like sexy pop rock (and not accomplishing it too well I might add) but the words, melodies, and keys are different between the two songs. I think one song could serve as inspiration for another? Maybe?

  23. deanz says – reply to this

Sound ever so slightly similar… but i doubt there was plagiarizing. Carrie is WAY better anyway.

  24. 24

    nope - sound nothing alike

plagarizing is a pretty harsh word mario….bordering on slander here

  25. 25

    Didn't hear it at all.

    Carrie's is better, too.

  26. 26

They do't sound alike at all! Just some nobody tryig to get her name out there!

  27. 27

the only thing similar is the drum beat.

  28. 28

They have the same beat - BUT THEY SOUND NOTHING ALIKE.

  29. Si says – reply to this

they don't song a thing alike

  30. 30

    they're they same.

  31. 31

  32. 32

Brittany Mcdonald just burned her bridges with nashville's writers.

    Nice meeting ya!

  33. 33

same beat in the beginning but after that i don't think it sounds all that similar. Besides, this wouldn't be Carrie's fault, she doesn't write her own songs.
And Carrie's voice sounds WAY better than the other girl's.

  34. 34

I think the instruments sort of sound similar, but I've never heard of that other girl, and I like Carrie's song better. Just wait though, to make it go away, Carrie will probably invite the girl to sing with her onstage at some stupid show.

  35. 35

seriously who cares, i love this bitch!!

  36. 36

carrie underwood kinda looks like jamie lynne spears in that pic hehe..

  37. 37

Hmmmm Who cares about the song… Looks like Carrie has fallen to the Hollywood curse… only how old and already getting stuff done to her face… She looks very different… Too YOUNG for that!

  38. 38

Nope. Not even. Seems like this other chick just wants some PR.

  39. 39

WHat?!?! The background beat is SLIGHTLY similar, but they dont sound alike at all! Your on drugs perez.

  40. 40

Am I the only one who was taken to a porn site with this link?

  41. 41

Re: elephantsbutt – I thought i was the only one, but yes i was brought to a porn site as well.

  42. 42

This links to a porn site!

  43. 43

I clicked on the link and I was taken to some messed up porn link…not cool!

  44. 44

    Did Carrie get lip injections?
As for the songs, run-of-the-mill country songs. Nothing remarkable

  45. 45

What bothers me, is that Carrie's songs are so similar to each other at least their theme. Not her ballads, but her faster songs are like all the same: Last name, cowboy casanova, before he cheats… Boring.

  46. 46

Total bs! Carrie does write her own songs people so stop spreading lies! She wrote over half the songs on her new album and 4 songs on her last album! The songs sound nothing alike and the McDonald chic is using carrie to make a name for herself. Carrie should sue for defamation and slander! Carrie is a great songwriter so stop spreading lies! She is way better then Taylor's bubble gum crap!

  47. 47

I cant listen to the other girls version but who the heck is she anyway?? I've never even heard of her. and a lot of country songs sound the same… but i'll judge it when i'm able to hear it

  48. 48

haha, Carrie and her people stole that song. BOOOOOOOOO!!!

  49. 49

ha random, why is she holding a sharpie marker?

  50. 50

by the way, this Brittany McDonald girl is NOT good.

  51. 51

Re: Taylorsucks – haha, completely agree!

  52. 52

Well…I don't know about the song, but what caught my attention was her lips in this picture. Her top lip has been plumped up big time!

  53. Booma says – reply to this

All country songs sound the same! These are fairly different and well, isn't that the way the music industry works? Carrie is bigger and better than this girl so she wins! Plus, CARRIE isn't plargiarizing… her WRITERS are. CARRIE writes NOTHING on her own!

  54. PAH says – reply to this

It doesn't sound that similar… NEXT!!!!!

  55. 55

Re: Soda-Pop-Lover – She's holding a sharpie because this picture was taken at a signing DUH and she didnt get anything done to her lips its just the face she's making SHEESH! and Carrie does write her own music! She co-wrote Cowboy Casanova! and after i've listened to the two songs they sound NOTHING alike!

  56. 56

it only sounds a little similar… i think McDonald is making something out of nothing…
As for this picture- it looks like a REALLY old pic from right after she won Idol (which explains the bad makeup and she has a wider face..)

  57. 57

okay, just because both songs have drums and guitars, doesn't mean they sound similar. move on people, this is a load of junk.

  58. 58

    everything is plagiarized these days….

  59. 59

they really don't sound similar to me at all.

  60. 60

The songs don't sound alike! And Carrie is a REAL artist with an amazing voice. This chick is just trying to get her 15 minutes!

  61. 61

Not similar enough at alllllllll to make anything happen. And even if ONE of the writers of CC heard this other song, Carrie and the other writer(s) (can't remember who had a hand in writing it besides Carrie) didn't hear it.

  62. 62

This is total BS! First, the songs sound nothing alike. Clearly, this no-name want to be singer is lying to bring attention to herself, and using Carrie to get famous. Not cool. Remind me never to buy her albums!

Second, Carrie DOES write her own songs, in contrast to many off the comments here. On Carrie's last album, she wrote 4 songs, 3 of which hit number 1. On her new album, she stated that she wrote over half the songs on the album. She co-wrote Cowboy Casanova, and she is a person of great integrity. She would never steal anyone's songs as she has plenty great songs that she herself wrote to choose from.

In addition, Carrie has amply songwriters to work with at her fingertips, and doesn't need to steal anyone's ideas.

Carrie is a very honest, kind person, who would never do anything like this.

Perez, not cool that you even posted this TRASH!

  63. 63

That doesn't sound that similar. The beat/tempo is very similar, but so are thousands of songs out there. Sounds like a wannabe-Carrie grasping at straws…

  64. 64

the songs do not sound alike, and they aren't even about the same subject. sure they might have a similar beat, but a lot of songs do. carrie's song is much better anyway, there's a reason she's a huge star and nobody's ever heard of this random girl

  65. 65

Umm your link goes to asian porn hub.

  66. 66

can see a similarity in the premise and the rythmn but lets be honest here the bang one does not have as much punch to it. I guess it would have been better if Carrie sung it and her team worked on it but honestly it sounds like they took her idea and improved on it. I guess that could still be plagerizing..we will see what the courts say

  67. 67

They're totally different songs. The drum beat may sound similar, but there's a lot of songs that have the same drum beat and start the same way. Just another wannabe trying to get attention. Carrie's song is better, MUCH better.

  68. 68

  69. 69

they dont sound anything alike! despite a similar beat in the background, they are completely different songs..and Carrie's is CLEARLY better.

  70. 70

Your link has been hacked, it sent me to the Asian porn hub. I better not get a virus.

  71. 71

This really is very old news. Resorting to old recycled news Perez? There are only so many notes on a scale that someone can pick some so many beats are going to have a few of the same notes, duh. The lyrics are NOT even similar or the melody. This type of story comes along about once a month and always involves some no name artist supposedly saying a big artist stole their song because two notes sound the same. Boy, did they take a leap trying to say these two songs were the same.

  72. 72

does it ever really matter…like music is music. Even if the tune is the same or not, or even the words are simular, like really? Who gives a shit…I dont, and im sure a lot of other people dont either…Besides i HARDLY doubt that Carrie composed it herself, therefore its not her fault…Shes just the pretty faced singer

  73. 73

I can't believe anyone is fighting over these two songs. They both SUCK.

The main similarity between the two songs is that both are claiming to be country songs, but sound like pop/rock excrement.

Carrie's music has gone downhill since she decided she had to write. She's simply not a talented writer.

Best Carrie can come up with is "sequels." "So Small" was an obvious sequel to "Jesus Take the Wheel." "Last Name" was even marketed as a sequel to "Before He Cheats."

Now it's just getting worse. "Romo Casanova" is HORRIBLE. Who the fuck says "record machine!?!"

Carrie has the best song writers in Nashville at her disposal and this is the crap she comes up with?

I used to think she was a smart girl, but no more. She should just buy songs and make millions, like she did with the first album.

As for being a plagiarist, I see some similarity. I'd love to hear some real experts weigh in, instead of Carrie's obnoxious fans.

My guess is that Carrie's simply going to buy the other girl's silence anyway.

  74. 74

Perez, you're an asshole. Trying to use Miss Carrie Underwood's fame for your own gain. There is absolutely NO SIMILARITY between these songs (other than they're both country songs). It's obvious to me that Old MacDonald is using trying to catch a ride on Miss Carrie's coattails since she can't get signed. Sad, but true.

And anyone who buys into this SHIT is nothing but a troublemaker. And Perez, the attention WHORE that he is, is just using Miss Carrie for personal gain.

Go back to the farm where you belong, Old MacDonald! And Perez, you can go straight to hell. You deserve everything that you get, asshole.

  75. 75

Re: Taylorsucks – Teesharky??? IS THAT YOU???!!

  76. 76

Don't know who it was who advised this girl to make that claim - but she's just made a huge mistake… anyone who knows their country music won't touch her with a ten-foot pole. You don't make an accusation like that - I mean, this is Carrie Underwood, for crying out loud!

  77. 77

No it doesn't sound like it and if it did, how many songs out there use backtracks from other songs? WOW! Get a life.

  78. 78

    this is low perez

  79. 79

To all the haters from the Carrie Fans site:

The real story here is that Carrie SUCKS as a writer.

All the denial in the world doesn't cover up the fact that both these songs are lame and they DO sound alike.

CC is HORRIBLE. It's not country music, it's generic, thin, derivative, artless pop/rock.

Compare this song to just about anything Kelly Clarkson — who does pop/rock well — sings, and you can see the difference. CC is juvenile, dated, irrelevant, monotonous pablum.

A real songwriter can turn ordinary events into art.

Carrie's appeal ends after "nice voice, nice girl, pretty woman … " After that, a complete blank.

She's got no soul, no personality, no story to tell.
