Mel Gibson and his lawyer are going before a judge next week to request that his infamous DUI is removed from the actor's record.

The DUI shoudl not be removed from his record for two reasons:
#1. he's an adult, not a child who got wrapped up with the wrong crowd or was at the wrong place at the wrong time. juvenilles sometimes can petition to have their records expunged as a way of helping them move forward with healthy, productive adulthoods.
#2. everyone on the plent with accent to TV and internet know what happened. what can removing the DUI from some record no one ever sees change about that?

I don't know what the law is like in California, but I know here in Minny, you HAVE to petition to have a DUI removed from your record. As far as I know, all misdemeanor DUIs become eligible for removal after a certain period of time (3-5 years or something), but they won't automatically come off. You have to initiate it. That might be all that's going on here.
Nothing shady or shameful about it, if that's the case. Just a necessary step in the process. Unless you're suggesting that Gibson, of all the people in the country who have to do this, should be the only one who is not allowed.
Don't treat him any differently than regular folk. Most people who get a DUI have it haunt them for years.
