Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary has been sentenced to one year in jail and five years probation for DUI charges and vehicular manslaughter stemming from a tragic auto accident in January 2008.

He caused the Ojai, California, crash in which his car sped out of control at 100 mph resulting in a fatally injury. A family friend visiting from Italy, Andreas Zini, was killed along with critically injuring his own wife, Gretchen.

Avary has reached a $4.1 million settlement with the victim’s family, along with taking full responsibility for his actions.

“It has profoundly altered me to the very core of my being,” he said.

The Pulp Fiction screenwriter will be allowed on the work furlough program so he can continue two film projects.

I'm sure he could run away to France for the next 30 years and get the whole thing dismissed because it was unfair.

funny how we're all told, even as young as elementary, how bad drinking is for you not to mention how stupid it is to drive while intoxicated yet grown adults all get behind the wheel after having a "couple". how selfish and irresponsible can some people be……i have no pity for this man, only for his unfortunate wife and the family of the man that died

Perez, your middle-of-the-road attitude to this piece, compared with your take on the Polanski story, is laughable. I suppose having sex with an underage girl is, morally, worse than killing someone by stupidly drive a car drunk? I'd stick to being a opinionated tosser if I were you, you'll make more money.

Drunk driving sentences are way too light. He gets 1 year for killing his passenger??

    13. 13

One year for killing someone!!!! Yet the Canadian government is allowing the US to extradite a Canadian business man so he can spend FIVE YEARS in an American jail for mailing marijuana seeds into the country. One year for manslaughter, Five years for marijuana seeds. I ask you how fucked up is that? Both countries are horribly morally skewed.

      Work Furlough?!
      .
Most people who murder with speed don't get that kind of consideration

Work furlough? WTF? Too bad his friend doesn't have a life furlough. His life ended in a split second. Why shouldn't the same be said for the offender? Let his life, as he knows it, stop. Screw him if he is in the middle of projects. His friend was in the middle of his life. Grrr… this stuff makes me furious.
