Little People Find Refuge In Theme Park Commune!

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueSad Sad

Well, it's not the most sensitive country concerning human rights!

In the mountain community of Kumning in southern China, live 120 residents all under 4ft 3inches tall.

They live in a commune and fast-growing tourist attraction as the inhabitants have built mushroom houses and constantly dress like fairy-tale characters.

"As small people we are used to being pushed around and exploited by big people. But here there aren't any big people and everything we do is for us," said spokesman Fu Tien of the community equipped with its own police force and fire brigade.

Although the village has sparked serious debate, most feel that this is best form of employment for these people due to the surplus of labor in China.

"We might feel aghast at treating humans this way but this is the best way the Chinese government can deal with the situation right now," wrote a commenter on the GoKunming site. "Go back a hundred years or so in our culture and we will see that we did the same thing à la the freakshows and the circus."

It's a small world after all.
It's a small world after all.
It's a small world after all.
    It's a small, small world.
    There is just one moon,
    And one golden sun.
    And a smile means,
    Friendship to every one.
    Though the mountains divide,
    And the oceans are wide,
It's a small world after all.
It's a small world after all.
It's a small world after all.
It's a small world after all.
    It's a small, small world.
    (Repeat ad nauseam until it's
permanently etched into your neural synapses)

If one reads the history of the old freak shows, the "freaks" were performance artists. They could not have been employed elsewhere in many cases. When people started trying to pass laws to ban the freak shows, the freaks spoke out against these laws. As one of them said "what do they want us to do, be on welfare?" I think this situation is very similar. Good for these people! They take what others see as a disability or deformity and turn it into an asset. I applaud them.

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

So… it's ok for rich, pretty people to live in Beverly Hills, where they dress like aliens, inject foreign substances in their bodies, have plastic surgeries, act a fool and are famous for being famous, but, it's NOT ok for small people in china to be able to live in a community of equality while making an honest living? Sounds like you have a double standard. Quit judging others… oh wait… that's what you DO.

We both know that the sky is God's stetch pad and when you look at the great wonders of the world, you are looking at God. However, we would never step a foot in China. Those people are trapped, we feel for them.

If it works for them who cares??

Have you looked arounf America lately??

For the richest country in the world - things are going to shit!!

  11. 11

I am chinese and even for me, china is a jailed out world

  12. 12

    More power to them.

  13. 13

Hey - a paycheck is a paycheck. If they can suck up tourist dollars (or yuan) without having to sew garments for 16 hours a day, good for them!

  14. 14

china, alienating their own people for tourist attraction for their shitty country

  15. 15

I don't think it's sad. Sounds like they are there willingly. And it takes something that could be hard to deal with and makes it fun. If I were a little person, I would LOVE to live with all other little people. It would make you feel so normal and accepted. :) As long as they can get away from the tourists when they want to. But maybe they like the limelight! Who's to judge?

  16. 16

    Thats crazy

Re: Rickneeds2kno – LOL, Reminds me of the Simpson's episode where Lisa started trippin' and they were held hostage in the "Small World" exhibit!! ha ha ha haha

I think if they started it, and are happy, no one is forcing them, then why not? And they're getting paid. I'm sure this won't be popular, I know China is a communist country, but I think it's a good idea.
    (Also, well said Cheesemeister!)

  19. 19

the mushroom houses look cool tho. :P

  20. 20

I can't find any proof that this place really exists.

  21. 21

I like it. Sad it is not.

  22. 22

Mushroom houses?! Now, that's something I'd like to see

  23. 23

Why is it sad? Typical 'white man north American' mentality…any belief that is not their own needs reforming.

  24. 24

this reminds me of one of my opium nightmares

    Re: cheesemeister – Well said…

  26. 26

They're happy and making money for just being themselves. Meanwhile Perez is being hated on by the whole world. Which is sadder?
