Robert Downey Jr. To Take On Harvey?

Filed under: Film Flickers > Tom Cruise > Will Smith > Robert Downey Jr. > Steven Spielberg

Good choice!

Robert Downey Jr. has snagged the coveted lead role in Steven Spielberg's remake of Harvey.

Harvey was originally a Pulitzer prize-winning play that was eventually made into a movie in 1950 starring Jimmy Stewart.

Downey would take on the role of kooky character Elwood P. Dowd who befriends an invisible six foot rabbit named Harvey.

Both Will Smith and Tom Cruise were also said to be up for the role.

Pretty stiff competition, but we really like RDJ and think that he will do well!

Maybe he'll even garner some Oscar buzz as Jimmy Stewart was nominated for Best Actor in this role!

    He is one sexy man…

  2. 2

Although I'm not please that "Harvey" is being re-made at all, I guess RDJ is probably the best choice. h'm.

  3. 3

love love love love love rdj. love him.

  4. 4

great! rdj is fantastic. much better than the very overrated smith and cruise

  5. 5

Robert Downey Jr. = Best Comeback Ever :)

  6. 6

I think Will Smith would have done really well.

  7. 7

    Can't stand this guy.

  8. 8

Love HIM. Best "F"ing comeback. He looks better than ever!

  9. 9

I am so happy for him that he and his career are back on track. It's an awesome comeback.

    Hands-down
    hand-some.
    And fascinatingly strange.

  11. 11

There s no need to remake this movie…. fuckers. They shouldn't have remade "The Women" either

  12. 12

Between Him and Two Scientology Freeks. Nuff said!!

  13. 13

One of my favorite movies. Hard to replace Jimmy Stewart. I though Jon Herder would have been better.

  14. 14

no no no NO NO NO NO!!!!! This movie should never be remade! It's impossible for anyone to ever do it better than the original. It's practically blasphemy to even think about remaking this. Bad move Steven Spielberg!

  15. 15

Loved Harvey the movie; loved Jimmy Stewart; love RDJ. Great choice!

No, just no. It was classic Jimmy Stewart. It's like remaking Gone With The Wind or Wizard of Oz. The role was perfect for Stewart and Stewart alone!

Agree with JimmyStewartLover. It should NOT be done. If it has to be done I think they should go younger, Ryan Gosling maybe. And although I can't stand Will Smith movies, for some reason I think he could pull it off. Hopefully more people will take an interest in the original which is sweet and unbeatable.

I'm so happy Robert Downey Jr. got the part. I saw the original on TV. Loved it! I Wouldn't even consider seeing a remake with the crazy Scientology twins Will Smith and Tom Cruise… ewww. Tom Cruise has actually made Will Smith unwatchable just by association.

  19. 19

okay, what's in his left hand??? it'd better not be…you know, the stuff that sends him to kids' beds! stay sober robert, you are adored.

WHHHHHHHHHHY?! this makes my heart hurt.
I love RDJ but Harvey is freaking untouchable. Jimmy Stewart is my all time favorite actor and human being and Harvey is an amazing movie that stands the test of time. WHY does Speilburg think this movie needs to be remade?! it's insulting and pointless. I love RDJ but I hope this movie fails and people just go out and watch the original.

I saw Harvey as a child and I still love it! Initially I would've gone for Tom Hanks but I'm sure R. D. J. will do an excellent job.. he better! ;-)

  22. 22

I think Robert Downey Jr. should get an Oscar. Now.

Soon. Before he dis-integrates as the "excusa-morphie" dude. Uh-huh.

And they thought Rob Lowe and Charlie Sheen were badass. Whatever…. I will remind you that I stand by Charlie and Robbie. Not, by this hairy chin-chin??? Yeah, okay.

Come, deep into the Matrix with ME A>>**%*(^e!!!!!

    Anya Blah, blah, blah, blah

Robert is perfect to play Elwood Dowd! Someone said they should have went younger? HuH, he is younger. Jimmy Stewart was in his 50's when he played Dowd. Robert is way younger and a fantastic, naturally gifted actor. Speilberg couldn't get any better. This is not a remake anyway. The 1950 movie Harvey with Jimmy Stewart was loosely based on the book. This version will be based on the book not the movie version. You all should actually read the book or see the actual play not the 1950 movie-not the same thing . Totally different. The book is a drama with a little comedy thrown in. Robert is perfect for it. Robert or Tom Hanks, Will Smith could have never pulled the actual story off. Tom Cruise was never up for the role either, it was Tom Hanks. I can't wait to see it. I feel it will be fantastic, and it is really not a remake it is closer to the book and play, that's not a remake. That is actually how it should have been done to begin with. I haven't seen a movie yet based on an actual book-it is just to much fun to rewrite someones' novels. Robert Downey Jr. never disappoints me, he's brilliant so I'll be there!

  24. 24

Wow, don't know how they could make Harvey a better movie. I like RDJ but I've never seen him be that vunerable and sweet. Maybe Tom Hanks could have done it well.

    25

"RDJ" needs to get over himself. He ain't all that. He seems to have forgotten his I ain't so high and mighty now crackhead days!!

  26. 26

why can't Hollywood come up with any original ideas anymore?? Leave the classics ALONE! No one can replace Jimmy.

  27. 27

Tom Cruise for the lead in harvey-much to short among other things. I've done the show before-it's delightful. Of the three, only Downey Jr. might be able to pull it off. I really can't conceive of anyone other than Stewart as Elwood, but who knows. That film was a classic, Perez! I'm still laughing about Streisand and a Star Is Born!

  28. 28

    WILL SMITH AND TOM CRUISE???

    Ahahahahahaaa hahahaa aha aha ahahaaaaaahahaaaaahaaaa

    your kidding right??

  29. 29

i cannot BELIEVE they're remaking Harvey….it's amazing as it is…leave it alone!

I respect RDJ as an actor and as a tres sexy man but these producers need to start thinkin of their own ideas
