Rio De Janeiro To Host 2016 Olympics Games!

This is exciting!
Rio De Janeiro has been selected to host the summer Olympic games in 2016.
This will be the first time the Olympics take place in South America. During the presentations to the International Olympics Committee, that was Brazil's big selling point and it makes sense.
The Olympics are for the whole world and that includes South America. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said in the presentation:
"The opportunity now is to expand the games to new continents. Light the cauldron in a tropical country, in the most beautiful of cities. Send a powerful message to the world that the Olympic Games belong to all people, all continents, and to all humanity."
Well, said! Congratulations to Rio!

I think it's terrible that they are allowing a country who allows its citizens to abduct children from the US host the Olympics. They shouldn't be allowed to do anything global until Sean Goldman is brought home.

I think this is a huge mistake. Frankly, Brazil is a fantastic country but it is beyond dangerous. I guess we can see if police crack down in RSA for the World Cup and keep tourists from getting killed/robber. If they can do it, maybe Brazil can as well.

This is Bullshit!!! I am from Rio and I moved to NY cause I was not able to deal with the violence. My parents and family still down there and they have problems everyday my sister was just robed last week AGAIN. It is time to focus on what it really matters! Lula is a douche and he is stilling money from Brazilians just like Color did. I am ashamed to be Brazilian and I can't wait to have my family in NY with me.
They chose Rio, great now all the tourist that go there can get robbed.

Actually Mexico is in North American, hence the NAFTA- the North American Free Trade Agreement. Then there is Central American and then you come to South America.
On the other hand why any country wants the Olympics is beyond me. It always cost the country more money, security costs are beyond insane, and the whole thing is a corporation. You apply to Coca Cola, not the city or country that is hosting it to carry the Olympic Torch. Just check out the cost over runs in Vancouver- security already estimated at a billion and a new road payed for by Canadians to rich peoples party condos at Whistler.
I will say though that Obama got off lucky with not having to pay to host it and still look like he supported it for Chicago- and Rio definitely seems like a better fit than another American kick at the can.

I can't be positive about Rio/Brasil is sad but it is just how I feel. I was born and raise there and l know NOTHING is going to change. The good people are behind bars ( their own bars around their home) and the bad people are free. It has been like that for at least 50 years and is not getting any better since I left it just got worst. People don't go out at night cause they are afraid of getting rob and so businesses are closing down and people are losing their jobs and it is just getting worst. I was robed with a gun in my head in the middle of the afternoon in one of the best neighborhoods in Rio and I will never forget that. We pay more taxes in Rio than we pay in NY and we have nothing, no good public schools, no security, no hospitals, is a JOKE that place and I hate it. Sorry but I have enough reasons to feel this way. My friends dad was killed while waiting on a red light by a guy that was trying to rob his car, just like that killed! Fuck Rio and Fuck Brasil! Thanks for posting Perez, and for agreeing with it. I am brazilian and I am so proud! Everyone at my office was watching the anouncement and we are all very excited that Rio won.There is lot of work to be done but we are confident that it well get done and it is going to be great. We´ll host the Soccer World Cup in 2014 and that is going to be great also.

Congrats to Rio De Janeiro! It is a beautiful country. Believe it or not I grew up in Chicago. And it has a lot to offer. This does not make Oprah or anyone else look bad. There is a lot of money involved. It's not cheap. I think Rio would be better because it will be lots to do and see. I like other cultures.
But, I am proud of Chicago and the people that tried. NEXT!
