Rio De Janeiro To Host 2016 Olympics Games!

This is exciting!
Rio De Janeiro has been selected to host the summer Olympic games in 2016.
This will be the first time the Olympics take place in South America. During the presentations to the International Olympics Committee, that was Brazil's big selling point and it makes sense.
The Olympics are for the whole world and that includes South America. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said in the presentation:
"The opportunity now is to expand the games to new continents. Light the cauldron in a tropical country, in the most beautiful of cities. Send a powerful message to the world that the Olympic Games belong to all people, all continents, and to all humanity."
Well, said! Congratulations to Rio!

There are many things to be done..that's fact, but one thing is sure, we, Brazilians, wanted it to happen and we'll work hard to provide the best Olympics ever! The time has come! Rio 2016 - "Live your Passion"!!

Re: Paty – I'm not surprised that your friend was robbed in Australia, especially if they happened to be in Melbourne. Contrary to popular belief, the system here kinda really sucks. A friend who lives a few blocks away from me had their house broken into the other day. A store at the local village was robbed and vandalized. The majority of the beach-side towns near where I live are over-run by "bogans". I'm not saying EVERYONE is like this, but I'm just saying there are a lot of scummy people in the world.
The health care system is great though, but when you're in the fucking emergency room for 4 hours, then you know there's still a problem. Also, the doctor at THE HOSPITAL didn't know how to read X-Rays. Go figure.
Oh, and for all those saying "Rio is violent, Rio is bad, blah blah blah blah", well I've got news for you: THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD IS CORRUPT. Pick a country, and there are at least 3 ways in which it is screwed up. I'm Australian/American, spend my life going back and fourth, and the flaws are obvious. My dad is Italian, his parents moved from Sicily to Australia because of the violence problem (with mafia and whatnot, although pretty much every country has a mafia now). And I know a lot of people who had issues with China hosting the 2008 olympics because their policies about basic human rights.
My point is, there is no way we are going to find a country without problems, especially in an economic crisis. So stop your biased bitching and be happy for Rio. There's always the 2020 Olympics, and then, most probably, many more after that.

I feel sorry about that, maybe that's why we need all to get together now and show the whole world that we can do a beautiful party in these games. I'm not telling this just to criticize you, because I admire other countries ways of life. Last week I went to England and got surprised of how clean and amazing the atmosphere was there. But, then, I came back to Brazil with another mind, such as "If the rest of the world can do it, why the hell can't we?" A true blessing in disguise. Illinois is billions of dollars in the hole and can't really afford this. We hosted both a summer and winter game; we had Salt Lake City and Atlanta. I'm glad for Rio and South America.
btw, why isn't the government creating those jobs! We were promised the government would and now nothing. hmmm…maybe government doesn't really create jobs after all.

On the other hand why any country wants the Olympics is beyond me. It always cost the country more money, security costs are beyond insane, and the whole thing is a corporation. You apply to Coca Cola, not the city or country that is hosting it to carry the Olympic Torch. If you want to see what a lovely city Rio De Janeiro is watch a movie called "City of God". Most of the city is still like that movie. I won't be booking a flight to that crime ridden, shit-hole of a city.
Let's celebrate Brasil's victory and just be happy that Puerto Rico, that poverty-stricken island of violence, drugs, welfare and spider monkeys(the people) were never in the running. But then again, there is no such thing as a Puerto Rican athlete is there? Those island monkeys consider peeling their bananas before popping them in their mouths a national sport. Brasil have violence issues like many countries (I lived in Toronto for 3 years and was robbed 3 times, and NEVER was robbed in Brasil) but say that Brasil is all about prostitution and violence is bull shit. I met Rio and it is one of the greatest cities in the WHOLE WORLD. It's really sad to hear people talking about what the dont know. Get of your stupid couch, go get some education, lern about other cultures. BRASIL IS AN AMAZING COUNTRY. People is beautiful, happy, full of joy and life and I've never seen the beauty that i've saw in Rio.
Unlike Tony Blair whose personal appeal for the 2012 got the London Olympics Obama failed and rightly so. Not so sure why the US thought that they could host it again. Especially after the complaints following the LA and absolutely dire Atlanta hostings with it's lack of organisation and poor facilities. No offense but the thing the World needs is the US to host the Olympics for at least another 50 years until they learn how to do it.
Sydney and Beijing showed the way forward in terms of organisation and setting. London 2012 will be good well organised and in a World Class City. These are World class Cities, Chicago is a hick town with no history or importance. The Worldswide equivalent would be hosting the Olympics in Dusseldorf, Manchester, Lyon, Adelaide, Wellington, or Islamabad. These are ugly tertiary, industrial cities of non importance other than to the inhabitant living there.
Rio on the otherhand is the right choice beautiful setting, classy and deserving.
