Willy Wonka On Broadway?

It's in the works!!!!
Reports are coming in suggesting that a stage musical based off the classic children's story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is being developed.
Behind the scenes of the project is Mr. Kate Winslet, Sam Mendes, who is producing and may even direct, David Greig is working on the book, and Hairspray’s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will compose the music.
Sounds like a strong backbone to the project, but does the world really need another reinvention of this story? No offense to Johnny Depp, but the last movie had us pleading for Gene Wilder to pop out and wanting Veruca Salt to start singing NOW!
Would a stage version be any better?
What do U think?

johnny depp was WAY WAY A MILLION TIMES BETTER as willy wonka than gene wilder
send us tickets and we wil go. when we come back, we will let you know if its good or not
I actually think this is an awesome idea
holy shit, i want to go.
I think the last one was actually truer to the book. (Minus the childhood flashbacks).
Re: ScarletMartini – me too….. stfu Mario
No, this is not going to work at all. There is too much involvement with special effects for this story and there's no way to really bring the magic of the story to a stage. Braoadway is running out of as many ideas at the film studios are! You can't make EVERY movie into a play!
It's spelled offenSe. Not offenCe.
duh.
Re: Aimee999 – Hmmmm….I don't know about that. I absolutely love Johnny, but I am also a true fan of the original and Gene brought a certain kind of child like wonder to it that Johnny didn't. Johnny kind of made him creepy…BUT it worked in Burton's version since it was way different. I like both movies equally so I think.
Re: Aimee999 –
I don't think so.
loved the depp/burton version of the movie — b'way might be cool
Jeez pervez, sounds like a fun project and will create a lot of biznez for all those franchises, loading everybody up with sugar, reducing levels of interest to "see all the pretty colors" set to Andrew L. Weber anthems and a few people getting vastly overpaid. That particular poster for this article has always reminded me of MJ. It's the clothes and pose. Now there's an idea!!! Combine MJ with WWII, change name to "WW's New White Chocolate–Over The Moon!"
i like both
Right On!!
YES! YES! YES!
Johnny Depp was isnpired by MJ so obvious….
Willy Wonka is one of my favorite movies, and I think the Johnny Depp version butchered a classic! I hope they don't do that again with a theatrical version.
Well I've always liked Willy Wonka and Johnny Depp just makes the whole thing more exciting. I think it would probably be awesome if Willy went on Broadway!
I would love to see it, and, yes, it would entail a huge production to capture the movie(s), but, if you have seen "Wicked" or "Miss Saigon", you know it can be done.
Like a few others have said, minus the flashbacks…. the newer movie is much closer to the book. In fact the songs that the Oompa Loompas sing are the actual ones from the book. (Roald Dahl gets credit in the movie)
As for it being a play… it would be extremely tough to do…
Is JD gonna be in this cause then I'll def c it more then once. If he isn't I'll only c it once.
