Your Play Sucks, Shakespeare Sellars
It's been getting less than stellar reviews from the critics, but the real testament of how bad Peter Sellars' production of Othello truly is is the fact that audiences are up and leaving halfway through it!
Reports are revealing that the show, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman at NYU's Skirball Center, is being loathed by audiences, with many leaving during the intermission, never to come hither again!
One patron who managed to stay to the second act actually admitted to seeing Sellars himself go up onstage "to urge those who'd managed to make it past intermission to occupy the now empty seats in the front of the theater — 'Move up. Please move up. The closer you are, the better.' "
That's pretty depressing. Imagine if you all had shelled out for Broadway?! Yikes!

One of my best friend is working with Peter on this show, and it was a good show. It's a different form of art. But having said that, I've heard nothing but only praises and nice things from the cast and crew whos' been working with Peter. My best friend actually worked with Peter for the last year doing various shows with him.
What a shame. The original play itself is brilliant. This is sad.

This show is actually amazing. It's very long, and I think that's one of the main reasons people are walking out. It's Shakespeare people. If you can't hack it, then yeah please get your asses out of my way so I can see better.
i watched the entire show. second act was MUCH better, but it was pretty painful.
people left during the first act but it seemed like half the theater left at intermission

There will always be someone who walks out of a show. Always. The fact that Broadway shows "must be a hit" stifles the industry. There's no room for new playwrights under these demands. Get ready for the theatre equivalent of The Hills if you insist on perfection… It'll be awful.

For anyone in London, see Othello with Lenny Henry starring in it. He is apparently phenominal as Othello, and puts all the other actors to shame according to the reviews! He's on til December.
