But the voice is a muscle, right? It can get better the more you train it, right? Right???

      That was OK, but I agree that all those years of smoking crack have fried her vocal cords and not, it's not true that you can get your voice back just by retraining it. It's one thing to be out of shape from lack of singing, but it sounds like her vocal cords have developed nodules from all the hot air from the crack pipe flowing over them. Sadly, she will probably never sing well again. She was the best of her ear, and it's sad to see she has declined so much. I hope she stays clean and improves as much as she can, but she's lost a lot to drugs. I hope the young singers who emulate her take a lesson from what her addictions cost her. Very sad.

      Hate to say it…her voice is gone and it isn't coming back. Drugs ruined it. And being in her 40's has nothing to do with it, Streisand is 60 and still has hers. One of the most beautiful voices in the world~destroyed.

      Yeah whatever. Perez. She has impeccable phrasing and although her voice is not what it used to be she is completley managing its limitations. She is still better live than 90 percent of the singers out there. Now she has the voice of a mortal but that actually brings some heart and vulnerability to her performances that was lacking when she had that superhuman voice and range. Some of Billy Holliday's best work was after her voice had been ravaged by abuse. I LOVE HER. SHE IS STILL ONE OF THE BEST.

Whitney sound really good in that performance, alot better than majority of the artist YOU praise on this site.       Unfortunately damage which is the result of years of smoking crack may be irreversible. Any smoke which is inhaled flows directly over the vocal cords (or folds as they properly known) as it passes into the lungs. I am guessing the temp from crack is pretty hot and it is bound to cause damage such as a thickening of the folds due to inflammation. Exercising the voice may help but if the delicate tissue itself is damaged, it is unlikely that it will recover. Whitney has previously suffered from vocal nodules during her "Bodygurd" tour and they have likely returned. From what I have heard of her so far, the damage sounds permanent. FYI vocal cords are mucus membranes rather than muscles.

      I am a professional vocal teacher, and have extensive knowledge about this area, obviously. She is singing mostly the right pitches, although she is flat throughout on higher notes, and there is noticable straining, and whispiness of tone. Yes, the voice ages, and changes, but her's has not been a graceful change due to abuse. It will not rebound. Period. That coupled with terrible pronunciation issues (she sounds very 'county' when she pronounces her words, now) make for an overall unfinished-sounding product. She needs to work with a diction coach, which could greatly reduce the 'ghetto twang' which she is now singing with…and, everyone is right. This is a damn shame, for such a voice. Can the woman still sing? Yes, of course. It is worth listening to anymore? Unfortunately, no.

      Taken care of a singer's voice is at its peak in their 40's and 50's… She has definitely damaged her vocal chords and probably will not get it back. She's uses every trick in the book not to really sing but rather mostly talk through the songs now… her background vocalists take up the slack… and she's put on a lot of weight around the mid section…

I'm just glad she's released some new material. The new album is actually quite refreshing. Not many of the artists of that era can still sing with the same zest they used to - Mariah Carey's latest album is WEAK and that's without having spent the past few years on drugs..       Lately you have been pretty fair when it comes to Whitney but here you must have been listening to something else. She sounds great! Who is she in competition with anyway? Her younger self?
