Such A Great Cause! Gomez Goes Ghana

We've said it before, we'll say it again: Selena Gomez is our favorite Disney teen!
The Wizards of Waverly Place star recently returned from a trip to Ghana, where she was visiting the West African country as part of her duty as an ambassador (the youngest ever!) for UNICEF.
"I got to meet teens, I got to meet children, I got to meet families… It was completely life-changing and eye-opening," said Gomez on her travels.
Selena, who hopes to earn $1 million for the foundation by the year's end, has gladly taken on the role as an inspiration for both friends and fans alike!
"…I feel very honored to have a voice that kids listen to and take into consideration," Gomez graciously admitted. "I had people on my tour asking me where IS Ghana, and they Googled it … and because I went there, they now know where Ghana is. So it's pretty incredible."

As far as needy countries go Ghana isn't that bad off. I know a few people from there. It's not considered to be one of the least developed nations. They have a free basic public education system. Their constitution guarantees equal rights "whatever his race, place of origin, political opinion, colour, religion, creed or gender". I'm glad she's making an effort to help, but it's not like Angelina going to places where refugees are starving to death all over the place.

As many said, Ghana aint that underdeveloped. And she can fork out the 1 million dollars herself, heck I earn way less than she does how does she expect me to donate it's not like I'm whoring myself like she and the disney twats are doing. And again how was she chosen as a UN ambassador, she barely finished high school or whatever, if this show biz gig fails for her (which it is) she has no decent education to fall back on and will end up like Lindsay - is this the role model children want to aspire to? Natalie Portman and Shakira are great Ambassadors both continued their education even during their careers.

Some people on here hardly use their brains to mentally think stuff out. I bet you she has donated money already and she went to Ghana personally alreadt. She just wants her fans to get involved with unicef and she wants to make us learn about Ghana. So she's trying to show us we can make a difference. these are the kind of things that more disney stars SHOULD be doing. I wouldn't call her or any of the h-wood celebs a "role model", cause the great majority of them don't deserve that title, but so far she's demonstrated that she's very down-to-earth. Good job, Selena!!!

Not to be offensive, but being involved with UNicef and donating money to such organisations doesn't help these countries, since after years of donating money, clothing, food, etc.. to such people barely any improvement has been shown from these governments. If actual awarness should be shown, is that to show these people that they have to stand up from their pity asses and fight for their rights. What Gomez and some other celebs are doing is making use of such positions for their fame and not to help people. Clearly from her quoted comments, she barely seems to have an idea of the actual cause itself, it showed more people's ignorance on geography. The only reason why she might have been seen as a benefit for the UN, is because they can make her their puppet spokesperson, since it is very clear she barely grabs a newspaper.

Yeah she's barely 17, but she's doing a hell better job then you typing on the computer. If you think you got it all set why don't you go and make it happen? Instead of judging others for actually doing some good then why don't you go do what you say people should do and do it better. She's not doing this for fame because last year in 08 when she was doing this she didn't have anything to promote. I think that Selena Gomez is absolutely fabulous and every young starlett should follow her lead. She's classy, real, gorgeous, and honest with who she is. Being a UNICEF ambassador alone is a fantastic achievement alone, never mind that she is the youngest. Great job Selena. You are adorable!!!

And clearly you don't know nothing about politics. As I and others said Ghana ain't that underdeveloped, currently the US is probably suffering more economically than Ghana is.
And one has to be realistic, it has been decades that countries like Ghana have been given help, I don't mind providing help, but barely any improvements have been shown in these countries especially from their governments (which are practically relaxing themselves, while others are feeding their people) and so something needs to be done.
What Selena is doing is nothing special, just making another politicised lazy organisation attract new people to their so called "cause". Research has shown that barely 1/4th of our donations to these countries arrive to the actual needy.
Selena and others are being puppets for these organisations and benefiting from it for their fame. And saying that she is doing more good than I am, please don't judge me for not being stupid. If I had the "power" yes I would do something about it, but in real life it has shown that in the majority of cases without any power/status one can barely get their words heard. Ex. becoming president - if you have no money and don't know the right people than forget it of becoming a president, even though the constitution says that any legal citizen can become a president.
