Beastie Boy Travels To India For Cancer Recovery
Hoping to set the minds of his fans at ease, The Beastie Boys‘ Adam “MCA” Yauch sent out a massive email to his devoted followers discussing his recovery from salivary gland cancer.
Adam took this time to travel to India and talk with Tibetan doctors about alternative medicine and advice on how to proceed. During his time there, he was fortunate enough to attend a "three-day" teaching, hosted by the Dalai Lama himself! He confesses that the experience has been very good for him, helping him to feel "healthy, strong and hopeful", which is what we love to hear.
Adam also writes:
“I’m taking Tibetan medicine and at the recommendation of the Tibetan doctors I’ve been eating a vegan/organic diet, which surprisingly enough was harder to do in India than it is now that I’m back home. Here I can just shop for the right food and cook… a lot easier than depending on restaurants. When I was in India I visited an ani gompa (a nunnery) called jamyang choling. They did a puja (religious ceremony) for me to help me get well. One nun said to me ‘we do prayers and then you are better.’ So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.”
Whatever works, whatever helps, keep doing it!

while i commend him for going the extra mile and i would do the same, nothing and i mean NOTHING beats american medicine (until obama gets his hands on healthcare that is). i wish him well.
Worrisome because when they start going abroad for cures, it indicates traditional treatment hasn't worked very well? Of course, with the billions of dollars pumped into cancer research and zero cures found, even that itself is worrisome.

I REALLY REALLY hope he also tries modern treatments like radiation and chemo. I don't want to believe that he's this seemingly stupid.
I recently had a biopsy for the same kind of cancer he has. It came back benign. I was resigned to radiation/chemo–whatever science had to offer. Not that it isn't nice for people to pray for you in whatever tradition they follow. But you know, modern medicine has a much better track record…
I am so sorryto hear about people like him…Steve McQueen, Rock Hudson, Farrah Fawcett who go all over the world for the cure.

Yay for you, for the good diagnosis.
I had a friend who discovered she had cancer while traveling through India. She chose to stay in India and seek treatment, because of the spiritual aspect. She got a combination of Western medicine and Eastern alternative treatments, which gave her a great peace of mind and helped get through the hard times.

I can't believe how stupid and arrogant americans are to think that THEIR modern medicine is the best in the world and everywhere else is just backwards alley garbage pseudo medicine.
'Modern western' medicine as we know it has only been around for maybe 80 years? Tibetan and Indian goes back for thousands of years! But just like children, american medicine thinks it's always right, even though in America, the 3rd cause of death is proper use of meds, and the 2nd cause of death is improper use of meds and medical mistakes. The fact that Americans rank 37 in terms of global health care should tell you something too.
btw I survived sarcoma (a rare cancer) WITHOUT chemo or radiation, just like thousands of others do every year.

The WHO ranking are based on five indicators: health inequalities within the population, overall level of health system responsiveness, distribution of responsiveness within the population, and the distribution of the financial burden of the health care system within the population. Obviously, these rankings will favor systems with socialized health care systems. Do you really think Colombia, Chile, and Dominica have better medicine than the United States. No, they don't. Most innovation in medicine comes out of the US. These countries are just ranked higher than the United States based SOLELY on those five indicators.
As far as the life expectancy issue, many of the most prevalent causes of death in Americans over age 44 are largely lifestyle-related (obesity-> heart disease, diabetes; smoking->lung disease). American medicine isn't inferior to any country's; many Americans are just gluttons and aren't doing as much as they can to improve and/or maintain their own health through lifestyle choices.
Sooooo maybe you need to get your facts straight (or at least understand them more, and how they do not at all relate to this issue), and not me0101.
Re: CamelToe – some cancers can just be removed by surgery. it sounds like maybe that's what you had done, if you didn't have chemo and radiation. maybe Adam's is the same way. but we don't know all the details. please realize that chemo and radiation can (and do) save lives. sure, they are terrible and painful ordeals, and no one WANTS to have to go through that, but they do kill cancer cells. not everyone can successfully fight cancer, but MANY are in remission thanks to these treatments. i think its great that you didn't have to go through that, but please realize that for many people, it is their best hope.
He won't read this but, be strong, MCA. I'm asking the good lord to help you find out why this is happening, what part of your life needs some adjusting (what are you lacking and what have you abused). In indian or chinese med, the body parts affected can guide you in knowing this, but do not give up on science either. Do keep insisting on getting your life back if that's what you truly want.
Why are some people shocked and surprised when someone dies or is diagnosed with a terminal disease? We are all going to die from our last disease. Rather than going to a godless person for assistance, the squater the deli laaaama, maybe he should reach down, way down in his heart and listen to what it has been telling him all along and investigate that. Truth is absolute and his and everyone elses denial of the Truth does not change the Truth. What will happen to him and everyone else after the last breath? That and that alone he should be focused on.
Re: mamaburr – Do more research. Watch the movie "Eating." Study the Okinawan diet. It all comes down to the food people eat. A healthy immune system kills the cancerous cells that develop in everybody's body every day. The type of cancer one has is a huge variable as well. There is much more information out there IF you take the time to study and know!
