The late philanthropist and society woman Brooke Astor's son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted today of first degree grand larceny and scheming to defraud.

Brooke Astor had Alzheimer's disease at the time of her death in 2007 and Marshall, 85, used her disease to his advantage when dipping into his mother's fortune. The family's estate lawyer, Francis X. Morrissey Jr., was also convicted of scheming to defraud.

Marshall faces at least one year in jail and up to 25 years depending on how the sentencing goes on December 8. His attorney said they were "stunned" by the verdict and they plan to appeal.

Marshall has been accused of stealing money and luxury items from his mother's home under the guidance of Morrissey. Morrissey was also said to be helping Marshall manipulate Astor into bequeathing more money to her son in her will that was originally intended to go to charity.

The bastard deserves to go to prison for the rest of his life! Taking advantage of your ailing mother, who only wanted to help others, is the lowest of the low!

Well, the Lowest of the Low were actually a great Canadian band from the early 90's.. but this guy is a scum bag.

    3. 3

and the way he treated her was appalling. a woman of her background and generosity, and a white trash for a son. at least she may not have realized the full import and pain of what was happening

His mother has Alzhimers, in any day 20 plus years ago, i'm sure his mom would want him to have her property. i know my mom would never EVER want strangers to have her property. but somehow in her old age she was convenienced to donate it all. i don't think her son was going to keep her estate from donating, rather i think her son wanted to keep family items "with the family." perez, you are too quick to judge. shoudl you not have your $ job, if your mom, heavne forbid" left all her thigns to charity, woudln't you want to have a few possessions that you recalled from your youth? shame on you perez

We have no idea how she treated him as her son. Maybe she was a terrible mother? Maybe her societal duties were more important than he was? In that case, it might be understandable how he might consider himself her greatest "charity". From what I remember reading, she was a bitch of the first degree. She cared more about herself, her tumultuous marriages and her reputation than she did for her only child.

      Greed.
      Unadulterated Greed.
      Money,
      you should pardon the expression,
      should be spread like manure,
      encouraging young things to grow.
      Hey Astor Estate:
      How ’bout watering My garden?

But was the mother giving everything to charity? Or was a part reserved for the son? I wish the French system was the same everywhere, where at least half the will automatically get separated in equal parts between children. I believe in that system because I believe parenting is a serious responsability and that people should think 7 times before committing into breeding children. I mean, if this man helped his mother all his life, and she was giving him nothing, I would understand him being upset. I need more details.

He's 85? How long will he last in prison?

Anthony Marshall is a dirty rotten bastard. After his mom took very good care of him Marshall did this to her. He is not alone either. Charlene, Marshall's wife is a rotten bitch too. Along with the crooked lawyer. He stole expensive paintings pocketed 2 million in commission. He wouldn't even let her buy new dresses. Let alone a hand rail so she wouldn't fall down. Marshall's own 2 sons went against him. He wouldn't allow anyone to talk or see her. He should rot in hell!

      Like mother….like son.
      You reap what you sow.
A chip off the old block.
Enuf said. Save your sympathy for those that deserve it.

You don't know the whole story - she neglected him when he was younger - she wasn't always such a nice person. Still if he did mistreat her - he shouldn't profit but I don't think an 85 yo should be doing jail time - house arrest is enough.

    14. 14

Brooke Astor was a douchebag, poor guy had a idiot as a mom,I would have ripped her off too, read her book.

    15. 15

Brooke Astor was a great lady!

She didn't deserve Alzheimers let alone that jerk of a son!!

      Rot in Hell Tony!

    16. 16

Money and power turned both Brooke and her son evil. Parents who exercise control over their children by threatening them with disinheritance is the plight of the rich.

I'll never understand people like this. I'd like to ask him if it was worth it.

    18. 18

Seriously, take time to read up on this bitch. She was horrible to him as a child and sent him away out of her life at every opportunity. IMAGE and STATUS were all she cared about. She's on record as saying she hated being a mother. She shipped him permanently out of her life when he was only 10 years old. As I said before, she was a complete bitch.

    19. 19

The wife was behind ALL of it, but it's about time. So long, Anthony.

    20. 20

Get your facts straight! Mrs. Brooke Astor was THE legendary heroine to the city of New York, as well as countless people in need - for many decades.

    21. 21

Sorry to say but the level of ignorance shown my some
of those who commented on this story is utterly
appalling. Yeah, some of you will indeed write nasty things
and call me a snob or whatever - who cares. The fact
remains that Brooke Astor donated mega-millions to
the Met Museum of Art, the NY Public Library, and countless
charities and it was her wish that her fortune should continue
to do good work following her death. Her son and his wife
evidently did seek to divert those funds for themselves but
is there really any point to sending a frail, sickly, 85 year old
man to prison for the remainder of his days? I fail to see
that there is any merit in this. Social castigation alone should
be sufficient punishment for these people.

This is like caring if Women can play at the Masters. Your talking about people that wouldn't even throw water on you if you were on fire. Who Cares!!!!!!!!

Re: Vexation – I agree. Family should ideally come first, then charities. You can hold some part in bringing messes upon yourself. This nasty case involving HER son perhaps could have been avoided. He was a decorated Marine Corps Second World War veteran , a former U.S. Ambassador to many countries, and a Broadway producer. It's likely he felt inadequately bequeathed by his own mom before the Alzheimer's set in, and thus this ugly legacy for him was the outcome, from the son's own doing. She was quoted as saying that money was like manure, and should be spread around. She inherited her vast wealth from her third husband (not accused's father) so its planned dispersal was within her right. It's just sad; for her, and her son and his family.
