Pot Legalized In 2010?! (In California, At Least)

marijuana_leaf_pic__opt.jpg

Listen up, stoners!

There may be some HIGH times in the near future - and there's nothing the cops can do about it!

Marijuana advocates are expected to get as many as three pot-legalization measures voted upon in California in 2010.

And the feds are not happy!

Several polls show support for lifting the ban on marijuana, but many wonder the consequences of a measure that conflicts with federal drug laws.

California already has a thriving pot trade thanks to a 1997 measure allocating medical use of the substance, yet full legalization would mean that joints could be sold on various liquor store counters and medical dispensaries could become full service pot stores.

Excited?!

The most likely ballot measure to pass is also the most conservative. It would legalize one ounce of marijuana for personal use by those 21 or older. In California, if you are busted with that amount in present day, it would result in a $100 fine at most.

Although, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that federal law enforcement officials have the right to prosecute users that comply with California's medical marijuana law.

"Even though that federal ban is still in place and the federal government can enforce it, it doesn't mean the states have to follow suit," said Robert Mikos, a Vanderbilt University law professor who is well versed in the issue.

And since local and state police will not be able to legally assist the feds, who's to say they'll have time to seek out small-time users.

"It's only something the feds are going to be concerned about if you're growing tons of pot," said Rosalie Pacula, director of drug policy research at the Rand Corp. For anything less, "they don't have the resources to waste on it."

Adrianne Curry may get her dazed dream come true!

Would U vote to legalize?!

Re: MP – Grow up and learn a little, would ya?
This State (I live in it) is broke and schools are suffering. I say we legalize weed so people don't go to jail for doing something MUCH less harmful than drinking and the State can reap the tax $$$$. It is a very good idea, really.
Besides, hemp is ludicrously overlooked as a valuable natural resource….
      Do some more reading!

Re: Lady_Saccharine_Sweetness – Explain? That comment seems somewhat random…
Hopefully anyone in law enforcement already sees the importance of catching rapists over joint salesmen.

    3. 103

      Re: Lady_Saccharine_Sweetness
your an idiot and obviously a lame. smoking weed does not make u stupid enough to get raped. alch does on the other hand. you cant smoke yourself retarded even if you smoke all day. hunny i been smoking for some years now and i have never felt like i could not think for myself or control myself. very sad comment. people blow my mind on this site.

    4. 104

Re: Frag The Paps – Read my other replies please. Thanks.

    5. 105

      yes!!!!!!!

    6. 106

Okay, this is the last time i'm going to say this… Adrianne Curry said she blamed her being raped on drugs being illegal. So her reasoning was that if you legalize drugs people won't get raped when going into the bad part of town trying to get some. I thought it was the dumbest thing i've ever heard so I posted it as a sarcastic remark. The quote was posted on Perez Hilton's page yesterday. If you read my comment on that posting you'd see I feel the same way you do… do not confuse her idiotic comments with my own and no I never smoked pot or got raped just for an fyi.

    7. 107

i had to give up weed due to high blood pressure… bummer, i know. but yes they should make it legal. that might end all the drug traffic killings, seriously help end the gang problems we have here, reduce law enforcement and prison costs, allow it to be taxed and help the state, and maybe, just maybe if we get all the uptight bitches high they might let us get married. LEGALIZE IT!!!

    8. 108

you lowlifes out there that smoke pot to get a high for like what an hour it a waste of time i think people that smoke or do any kind o f drug is honestly trash that needs to be thrown in the bin. MARIJUANA SHOULD NOT BE LEGALIZED ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES!!!!! why should it be so people can walk around like dumbasses just like they do when they are drunk ha support it you filthy people then more people can lose their brain cells! I CAN PROUDLY SAY I DONT DRINK ALCOHOL OR SMOKE …. OR INHALE SHIT IF YOU WANT TO GET HIGH LEAVE THE UNITED STATES YOU DUMBASS LOSERS!!!!

    9. 109

Re: jodozy784 – THIS IS WHY THE WORLD IS ON WELFARE THEY SIT AROUND AND SMOKE POT ALL DAY AND THEN AT THE END OF THE DAY GO TO THE STORE WITH THEIR FOODSTAMPS

    10. 110

Its about time…they need to cut that its-bad-for-you-shit out!!!! Anyone over 21 should be able to choose, its not like they're gonna legalize it and impose it on everyone…

    11. Gen says – reply to this

      111

It's about darn time! Yes, I'd vote to legalize it. Legalize it already!!! Alcohol is much much worse for you. Smoke pot! I don't know any mean, angry stoners. All the stoners I know are intelligent, articulate, and educated people.

    12. 112

OMFG NOOOO i want to go to collage in cali i dont want to inhale pot wherever i goo

    13. 113

      puff puff pass!

    14. 114

I am all for banning drugs like crack and cocaine but marijuana isn't a drug like that. It is less dangerous than alcohol. As long as we can still tell who is driving under the influence legalizing pot shouldn't be that big of a deal.

    15. @v@ says – reply to this

      115

If it doesn't work in California as a test state, they can always rescind the measures. Many countries have no problems with relaxed pot laws. Who knows.
It could work AND be extremely profitable. The measured results from trying this are easily quantifiable. California has always been at the forefront of looking at old and tired things in a new way. I wish them well.

    16. 116

@AnnieJ if that were the case then they would be making cigarettes illegal.

    17. 117

Re: jodozy784 – seeing that, statistically speaking, more than half the country smokes pot/uses medication to get high, it'd be easier to get rid of the ones that dont….dont worry we'll help you pack. Oh wait, thats right we'll all be too stoned to help, but u can manage right? lol

    18. 118

Weed is not a drug so hell yeah it should be legal. I am glad I live in Cali where I can already smoke it legally with my medical card. Its a natural weed that grows in nature. you dont add nothing to it. Its not like crack or anything like that. Fuck what happens when you smoke.. you get hungry and chill out. You dont become violent. It helps with neausea and pain. Its an awesome substance so yeah legalize it already. All you uptight bitches who are aganist it… get a life! Its only weed. And you are only aganist it becuase you never tried it. If you tried it you wouldnt be so aganist it.

    19. 119

      Re: Frag The Paps

Its for arthritis pain for the most part, but yes! You could totally whack off with THC infused lotion.

    20. 120

It is a well known fact that the 'war on drugs' fabricated and supported by the conservative sectors of the US is an industry with poor, very poor results on the practical side.
Legalize it; those who do not like it will continue not to use it and those who do, will pay taxes on their consumption. Everybody wins. So LEGALIZE IT!!!!!
      Choice is ALWAYS best!!!!

    21. 121

I am totally not for pot but I don't see how it's any worse than alcohol. Besides our state needs the money!
But I agree, we should just split from the rest of the country lol

    22. 122

FUCK YEA!!!!!!!! WHERE DO I VOTE!!!!!!!!

    23. 123

      legalize it everywhere!!!!!!!!!!

    24. 124

If it happens, I might have to move to California. Lax marijuana laws is about the only reason keeping me in Ohio.

    25. embo says – reply to this

      125

      FUCK YES!!!

    26. 126

      wooooooooooo!!!

    27. 127

That's it. I'm moving to Cali!!!!!

    28. 128

This is absolutely sickening. The last thing we need in the country is a mass amount of legal potheads. At least it'll make finding a decent job easy for the smart ones that realize pot is the most overrated, idiotic drug on the planet.

    29. 129

Finally, something this state can do that makes sense!!!

    30. Lo Ho says – reply to this

      130

I created an account just to comment on this….

HELL YEAH, CALI HERE I COME

    31. 131

The only reason its banned in the first place is becuase the gov cant tax it you can grow it for dirt cheap in your own back yard. Along long time ago it used to be legal but when alcohol came along no one was buying pot was the poor mans drug and when do one would but alcohol pot became illegal and blah blah blah don't quote me on this but its pretty liget!

    32. 132

YESSS!!! I support… Sadly I live in Maine. And the rest of ya are to ignorant. you probably smoked a hit once in your life and freaked out and you just can't handle it. or you never tried it and don't have a clue what u r talking about! ignorance is bliss as they say…

    33. 133

      yayaay

    34. 134

I've never tried it, but think it is no worse than cigarettes and should be legalized and regulated/taxed. My concern is the logistics of it, but hopefully the existing framework applied to cigarettes and liquor would facilitate an easier transition.

    35. 135

Eh, dunno how I feel about this. I think drugs are STUPID, therefore I think this is stupid.
But people are making good points about taxing it. And we all know the government needs all the money it can get right now.

    36. 136

The day this happens is the day I start looking for a house in CA. Fuck yeah!!!

    37. 137

Re: smarter567 – u couldnt have said it better. now i dont need to comment. thank u.

    38. 138

      FINALLY! sweet jesus..

    39. 139

It's about time. Now if only we could get the rest of the US to follow.

    40. 140

And THIS is more important then equal rights? People are going to smoke pot, regardless if it's legal or not. Man,California has their priorities a little backwards! Worry more about love and less about getting high. Prophate needs to go. Pot is here to stay.

    41. 141

Stoners would much rather have a Twinkie then your Twanky! Pot makes you mellow, not a raging rapist! I think you need a pipeful!

    42. 142

I want to add something. While I'm all for pot being legal, the statement that it does no harm,is false. Smoking pot fucks up your lungs. I know. I smoked pot for years and I have COPD. If people were honest, they'd admit that they cough like hell while smoking pot. It IS harmful. But,like anything else,it's people's choice. Just tell the truth about it.

    43. 143

WHAT!? This is horrible! Those poor drug cartels are going to lose 50% of their income if we start legalizing pot! How can they continue to grow in power if we don't let them control the sell of weed? It's totally discrimination, man.

    44. 144

Re: A Voice of Sanity – wow,for someone who calls themselves " a voice of sanity" you sure do come off as bat shit crazy! I would say the opposite, if the government went after terrorist the way they go after pot dealers, Bin Laden would be in jail. Also, you said "Islamic terrorist", it's kinda racist. Haven't you heard of The Unibomber or seen Die Hard?? there are all kinds of terrorist, lol. one last thing, hoping for a huge earthquake to hit CA is just evil. you are sick and just plain weird. no more posting until you can get your mind right but in the mean time, GO HOME AND GET YOUR FUCKING SHINE BOX!

    45. 145

If it's more profitable to criminalize dont expect anything to change soon. Re: Heh

You are so right. Bottom line: the government is made up of a bunch of economic fascists.

    46. 146

This, as well as many other issues, should be left up to each individual state to decide. This country is too large (and diverse) to impose such specific blanket laws. If you don't want to live in a state where marijuana is legalized (or decriminalized for that matter) you can move to another. Or, vise vera, if you want to live in a state that allows it.
      Re: AnnaW

Agreed. I prefer decriminalization because it keeps it discreet, off the radar and under the table. It doesn't promote or endorse weed, tax weed, advertise weed, etc. Grow your own smoke your own and it's no one's business.

    47. 147

cause you know California is a stepping stone to success amirite? Re: hair-on-me

Yeah judging by your state's current success with finances…if it talks crazy, looks crazy, acts crazy, it's California.

    48. 148

so they can legalize pot but not gay marriage?

    49. 149

YES! that would be the best thing for this state. Since we are bankrupt why not. Legalizing cannabis will help us get out of debt because it is the number one cash crop in California. I am a marijuana patient and it would be best if all of you voted yes to legalize it!

    50. 150

It's great to legalize pot! In the Netherlands, posession of softdrugs is tolerated (up to an amount of 5 grams) When marihuana is legalized it will be much easier to control the sales and use of it. Criminal organisations won't bother to deal marihuana anymore. Why would they, if you can buy it in every town?
Furthermore, people think that, when you legalize weed, all people (especially youth!) will use it continually and be stoned all day long. This is not the case: in Holland, 2.5% of the people use pot regularly and 15.6% of the population (above age 12) has used pot at least once in their life. That means that more than 80% never used marihuana in their entire lives!

    51. 151

Definatly wouldnt want it to be legal here in London.. but hey I know where I'm going on holiday next year ;)

    52. 152

HELLLLLLLLLLLLLL YAAAAA!!!!! WHEN R THEY LEAGALIZING IN NY????

    53. 153

HOORAY… let our police deal with REAL crime… there sure is enough for them to do

    54. 154

Yes!! (As long as it is regulated, just as tobacco, alcohol, and prescription drugs)
People should base their opinions on it with a heuristic approach, and not assume and accept a stance influenced by the general public's conjecture. You protect yourselves from things you don't understand by shutting down any independent thought and consideration. Weed, mushrooms, mescaline are all drugs that occur naturally. They are not produced or altered in a lab. They have been a major staple of religious and social culture throughout mankind's history. Yet they have been tossed into the category shared with methamphetamine, coke, heroine, etc. which are all drugs that have far more negative attributes than positive effects. These addictive substances are drugs which are psychologically and physically addicting which make regulation difficult. Weed on the other hand is statistically not associated with rape, murder, or violence any more than alcohol is. Of course there are exceptions in all cases, but in entirety the correlation is microscopic. The rare cases where weed is the factor are often skewed by the media, just as airplane accidents are compared to car accidents. Car accidents happen every day, but when the rare case of a plane crashing occurs the media sensationalizes it and creates panic, despite the statistics proving chances otherwise.

    55. 155

you damn jerks now 1000s of ppl will die because of drug addiction. BIG STEP IN WRONG DIRECTION.

    56. 156

People tend to think of a weed smoker as a lowlife, criminal, lazy uneducated social parasite. Just consider this–my fiance is soon to be graduating with his Masters in chemical engineering, and plans on continuing to earn his PHD. He aspires to help find a cure for cancer and I know that he is capable and perhaps he might. I admire him, and envy his intellect and his savvy in the math and sciences. Ironically, I am more of a liberal arts person than a natural science person and do not have his intellectual excellence. You would think that I would more likely be a "stoner" but I choose to not smoke; my fiance does. Yet he maintains a 4.0 GPA and smokes once a day. Just because there are a few jackass stoners out there that stigmatize smoking marijuanna does not mean their demeanor applies to all smokers.

    57. 157

Why don't we make our own judgment and choices via our own experiences, and respect others rights to do so. That is the great thing about the United States and the Constitution– our freedom to pursue happiness, as long as it does not infringe on the rights of anyone else.

A great philosopher, Voltaire was speculated to have once said, "I disapprove of what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it."

I am not purporting that people should like or agree with smoking marijuanna, but I am suggesting that people should mind their selves and not control the rights of another person.

      P.S.
I have smoked marijuana in my lifetime and I personally would not do it regularly but I do appreciate its enlightening and spiritually enriching effects. I used to be atheist but I understand and truly believe in God through my experiences with marijuana and mushrooms. I cannot explain it, it is an experience beyond words. I personally advocate the use of these substances as a religious sacrament.

    58. 158

BUT, just because I feel that way, doesn't mean you all should feel that way too and do the drug.

I am not forcing anyone to do the drug so why are people trying to force me to not do it?

(Note that I mentioned clearly that I choose not to smoke marijuana and I am using the above statement as an example of what I am trying to convey)

      :)

    59. 159

Re: kaddict – Sure, anyone can lie about thier fiance on the internet?!!! I doubt much of what you said is true!!!! 4.0 GPA doin' dope. Sure, that's the truth.

    60. 160

      Re: MP
AGREED! No wonder they call California the modern day Sodom and Gomorrah! You can't smoke a freakin cigarette anywhere…but you can go any get stoned??!! WTF…

      Loser stoners enjoy!

    61. 161

certain people should not comment if they have no idea what they're talking about.. lol

    62. 162

I agree with all of those saying "educate yourselves." The negative crap that is said about pot is all a creation of the government to help push that stupid "Just Say No" campaign back in the '80's (that clearly just encouraged kids to say "yes") If pot were legal, I would definitely smoke instead of drink. I think it should be legal and the government should require that it remain in its pure form and not be chemically treated to extend shelf life or addictiveness. If left in its pure form, it is way less damaging than liquor or cigarettes.

to trytalkin @ 159 - I don't doubt kaddict about the 4.0. I went to school with a guy who smoked up before every exam, and got 100% - on everything. Frankly, it used to kind of p*ss me off, as I wouldn't smoke, as I couldn't think as well, and I always ended up with a chest cold when I did. He's now a Nuclear Physicist, and still smokes pot everyday. I avoid it because my lungs don't like it.

    67. 167

Once the doobie train gets rolling it's hard to stop. It looks like Marijuana Dreamin' is becoming a reality. California would, naturally, be the first state to legalize.

    68. 168

Re: @v@ – This guy is a nuclear physicist and smokes pot. Then we're all doomed to nuclear fall-out!!!! I doubt what you say is true. If you think it' true, then the guy is probably lying to you about toking up everyday. I also doubt that the guy could get 100% on every exam, stoned or not. He was probably cheating, and he probably cheated when he was training to become a nuclear physicist!!! In all probability, the guy is holding on to the "pot-smoking everyday" lie because he feels inadequate infront of girls and beefcake guys so he wants to look cool. Simple as that my friend!!!

    69. 169

I can't stand Marijuana and it's effects which I don't think are healthy but (and I hate to say this) the state of California should legalize it for tax money since debt is killing that state. We've already legalized booze and cigarettes. How much worse could it get?

    70. 170

      To dream the impossible dream
      To fight the unbeatable foe
      To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
      To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
      To reach the unreachable star

      This is my quest
      To follow that star
      No matter how hopeless
      No matter how far

      To fight for the right
      Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
      For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
      To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
      To reach the unreachable star
      I.LOVE.POT.

    71. 171

Everyone will move to Californina. HAHA This is the only way that the Republican party could actually win the next election. Step forward GOP and make this happen everywhere. Hell, I'll turn Republican for this and so will everyone else.

    72. 172

HELL yes! Legalize that shit and national debt will be a thing of the past! lol.

    73. 173

Hell yeah! Pot is grown from the earth! hello its not like drinkin battery acid. And plus all the billions of dollars we would save that the government uses to enforce laws against marijuana. This country could totally use that money on something much more important! We are suffering so much economically…hello let's save a buck and smoke a joint!

    74. 174

Any fool that doesn't want it to legalize marijuana is just that. Drinking and prescription pills are THE problem, not pot. Who cares if people smoke pot? What kind of idiot still thinks pot is a problem? Before you judge, do some research of your own about the facts; dont just listen to what all the money machines want you to believe. Plus, its a plant for god sake. It grows from the same planet we all grow from and you don't have to process it to smoke it - it is what it is. Its been smoked by every culture since the beginning of time to enlighten, to relax, to heal. Look it up and open your programed mind to reality. Sheesh.

    75. 175

A more open minded comment is that marijuana isnt going to be legalized to benefit the potheads, but to only gather the underground untaxed money that is circulating in the inner cities. I dont think it should be legalized, it will ruin businesses in the inner cities, i know someone who sells weed and uses the money for good cause, like feeding his family. I dont know, the u.s wants tax on everything, and legalizing marijuana is a very desperate low act.

    76. 176

in the words of the great late john lennon. let it be, let it be.

seriously, just let people make their own decisions. weed would save and make america fat stacks. leagalize.

    77. 177

no dude. swear though. smartest kid in my grade, biggest pothead. smokes weed everyday of his life. comes into first mod blazed as fuck. maintains a 4.0 gpa. full rides to two colleges already. granted hes hispanic… but seriously.. there are some serious smart kids out there that do drugs. its not weed that makes you the sterotypical pothead, its the person. if you choose to do drugs and leave everything else behind.. thats your own problem. dont judge people just because they smoke weed. there isnt even any medical problems with it so seriously.. who cares.

    78. 178

      yeaaah(;
      i love that weed
