Just another reason to love her!
Gloria Estefan is treating 2,000 lucky winners to her weekend concert in Puerto Rico.
Close to 17,000 Puerto Rican government workers in the country are being laid-off due to the recession. The country has a 15 percent unemployment rate, higher than any of the states.
Sad.
Gloria bought all of the remaining upper-level tickets to be raffled off to some of the laid-off employees.
How generous!

As you would like to be informed, since you like insulting people, Puerto Rico is a "commonwealth", or more accuretely a "free associated state". Of course, this last term pretty much implies that is neither, free, nor associated, nor a state, but a territory of the United States. However, Puerto Rico functions with a local government with as much power as any other country, except nothing goes over the US Constitution. And, contrary to other states, we do have our own constitution as well, independent from the Federal one.
I do not like Gloria Estefan, but her gesture is very nice and sweet, and I'm sure those people who were regrettably laid off their jobs will truly appreciate it!

In both the Foraker Act of 1917 and the Jones Act of 1919 it states the following: Puerto Rico is not part of, but belongs to, the United States of America. And until this day, our relationship with the USA is still defined by the latter Act, which hasn't been revoked. The creation of the "Commonwealth" of Puerto Rico did not revoke the Jones Act.
Oh, and I agree with the Eminem thing. It's not like Gloria Estefan is the most popular artist in Puerto Rico… even if it is a very nice gesture, it might be also because the tickets have not been selling well!

In the debate of Puerto Rico being a country there is enough reason for confusion and many who seem to disagree here are actually both correct. Commonwealth..yes, free associated state..yes, territory…yes, but country no. That does not mean there is not elements that make us think of a country, such as self governance, a Secretary of State, and it's own olympic team. But ultimately on the list of 8 questions that define what is a country Puerto Rico fails on things like not being a part of the UN and not being recognized by foreign nations as a sovereign state. Puerto Rico also has no currency of it's own. There are many who believe that Puerto Rico should be a separate country and I respect their beliefs.
Scotland is often referred to as a separate country and I thought this was the case but it too ultimately fails the 8 questions as well, resulting in a classification of nation within the United Kingdom of Great Britain. It is all very confusing and opinions still differ on both locations and their status.

Thank you Gloria! Not too many remember that during the Vietnam war, more boys were drafted out of Puerto Rico than any of the 50 states. When you visit, check out the V.A., you will be shocked and saddened. Why would Puerto Rico ever want to be a state when the U.S. and never done anything but use and abuse.

she doesnot need to fill seats she already has money. I think when artists do this it is very very very very very awsome. Its like giving back to their fans and puerto rico is suffering. I am not puertorican , but i have met people from puertorico and this news made them happy. Good for her and good for puertorico!
