A Bomb? Nine Pushed Back To Christmas

Filed under: Film Flickers > Penelope Cruz > Nicole Kidman > Meryl Streep > Robert Downey Jr.

wenn2168747nine.jpg

The upcoming musical Nine with its star-studded cast of Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Dame Judi Dench is being pushed back to a wide-release on Christmas Day.

Originally the film was supposed to see a Thanksgiving weekend release, but now it will take on the Christmas box office competing with Robert Downey, Jr. in Sherlock Holmes and Meryl Streep in It's Complicated.

The Weinstein Company asserts that the later release is not because of production delays, so why the change?

It does look like a pretty glitzy, glamorous flick! More suited to the Christmas spirit perhaps?

Although the film is about a director and his affairs with multiple women, so maybe not.

Are U looking forward to seeing Nine?

A Christmas release guarantees review/viewership-proof, inclusion by the Hollywood Foreign Press (all 80 or so of them) into the nominations and eventually the ceremony. This goes for the Academy as well, as they have moved up their process. If it was released in November the possibly negative reviews would be out there for quite some time for the voters to think about and if it was a financial failure, given the size of the production, it could also hurt it's nomination potential. Although with 10 Best Pictures Nominated at the Oscars once again, all bets are off.

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS IS THE BEST ACTOR OF HIS GENERATION!

  6. 6

Well of course it's a bomb. Nicole Kidman is in it. That's the kiss of death right there.

  7. 7

Hell yes! I'm gonna see Nine. I'm waiting on pins and needles. It's going to be brilliant, I just know it. And I think a Christmas release makes more sense and is more appropriate. Can't wait!!

  8. 8

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS! I can't wait this long to see him. November was long enough to wait, and now, Christmas. Oh well, I'll wait. He's brilliant

Well, the movie does have something that could help it reach bomb-dom easily: Nicole Kidman ("Australia" anyone? Not even Hugh Jackman could save it). I'll probably see it though, because it's based on Fellini and Rob Marshall is directing.

  10. 10

NINE is a story based around the life and loves/muses of the italian director
    Federico Fellini

  11. 11

When did Nicole Kidman and Pene Cruz become friends? Didn't Tom bail on his 10 year marriage to Nicole and head to Pene's bed…. That's like Angie heading over to Jen's to talk Brad?

  12. 12

Saw the preview and it looks pretty Fab…so yeah…

I am really not interested. It is being pegged as more of an art film. Not many people realize that the film companies have to pay for a films campaign for an Oscar run. It is all a very political process. The Weinstein Co. is almost in bankruptcy. My bet is they'll pay for "The Road" for an Oscar run. That's why this movie was moved and is going to be released in two days on the 18th against Avatar, and on the 25th against Sherlock Holmes, It's Complicated, Up in the Air, and The Lovely Bones. Nine doesn't have a chance and they know it. They have doomed it on both release dates. They will put all of their money behind, "The Road" for an Oscar run. Paramount moved Shutter Island so they can put all their money behind "Up in the Air" for their Oscar run. It cost money to get one of your films in the running - just like politics. After that the voting begins. It's all a process. I have a family member that works for Paramount - that's how they all roll. The Weinsteins' chose the movie they're backing. Nine isn't it. They've doomed it to failure. It is all kind of sad really. Makes you wonder who the other studios are paying to back.

I can honestly say I am thrilled about this move. It was supposed to come out the same weekend as New Moon, and would 100% been overshadowed by that lame excuse of a movie. The Christmas release boosts its HIGHLY LIKELY Oscar chance, and it could bring in more viewership. I am personally so excited, as it gives me the chills just watching the trailer! I love Nicole Kidman, so I don't think she's the reason so many movies have failed…I think it would be the choice and concept of the movies she's in. But this one looks like gold.

  18. 18

The trailer is one of the best — ever! I can't wait to see this movie!

  19. 19

Oh Perez you just somehow "forget" to mention that FERGIE sings the main song in the trailer and is AMAZING and is getting mega accolades for singing! You should talk about bombs, your tour bombed!

  20. 20

i saw this on broadway and i soooo didnt get how ANYONE could think it was good the prob starts with the story…it sucks and means nothing in our culture now. whoever gave the green light to this movie should be fired!

  21. 21

It's Complicated and Sherlock Holmes are not Christmas-themed either, you idiots at Perezhilton.com. What does that have to do with it. Christmas movies draw in more ticket buyers and are closer to Oscar nominations. Chicago was a Christmas movie and it was about crime. Do any of you think before you type?

Re: winnie the pooh – s
Gee, thanks for explaining all of that to us.
FYI, anyone who watches ET or reads EW already knows all of this.

  24. 24
