Back in 1983, Madonna wasn't a household name. Her first album was just being released and she was doing one of her first shoots with photographer Kate Simon. Those pictures never were published - until now!

Actually what you were emulating were the fashions styles of designer Maripol, who helped create Madonna's look up through the Like A Virgina era. Anyone around in the early 80s would know that THAT look was inspired by the NY underground/UK new wave scene of the early 80s. Youtube some of the early 80s clips from the UK (Bananarama, Belle Stars, Total Coelo, etc.), and you can see that look was already in fashion before Madonna claimed it.
