What's Wrong With 30 Rock?

NBC was probably hoping for a big ratings boost with their season premiere of the Emmy award-winning 30 Rock last night, but they reached only a 3.0 rating for the coveted 18-49 demographic.

The show was down 27% from last year's premiere with only 6.3 million viewers!

YIKES!!!

Can't blame Jay for that one!

That's because people would rather watch crappy reality TV instead of a well-written comedy. People have terrible taste. I love 30 Rock!

    2. 2

It's honestly probably because of the MLB playoffs…I know that's why I wasn't watching!

    3. 3

GIVE ME ALICIA KEYS NEW VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    4. 4

      WHERE IS ALICIA KEYS VIDEO

    5. 5

      What's wrong with the show?
Tracy Morgan's lack of talent, for one thing

    6. 6

I will speak to whats wrong with 30 rock about Tina Fey reffering to her tenure on SNL. I believe Tina Fey is over-rated in that she was actually being compared to the original staff writers during the original first 4 seasons. I disagree COMPLETELY. She is the first female head writer I believe and that is her legacy, but show me the work. I couldnt think of a single skit with Tina Fey for a 'Best of Tina Fey'. Weekend Update? Come on. Rachel Dratch was talented as hell and underrated. Also Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell started out terrible but got really really good at the end of their SNL days.

It's because Americans like their comedy STUPID…….as in ….duh

That's why 30 Rock isn't the #1 show, and also why Arrested Development was cancelled.

Only people with brains like those shows…….everyone else is busy watching Charlie Sheen in that insipid show, or that "Earl" show with the scientologists.

    8. 8

Yes, you could blame Jay for this.
No one is watching NBC during his show, five vital hours for promoting OTHER NBC shows, so how many people really knew 30 Rock was having its season premiere last night?
      Duh.

    9. 9

Thursday's 20 minute rehash was just weak. Same old, same old. The characters need to go someplace, develop, maybe even find new shows. It appears everything has played out in 3 seasons.

    10. 10

I love 30 Rock, but somehow had no idea it was on last night until I was checking the guide for something else. They need to promote it more

    11. 11

i personally think the best sitcom ever was Arrested Development and it was canceled. This show is not that good…I watched it last night seemed like the actors were trying too hard and i barely laughed the funniest part was the guy who worked buy himself with a printer and he told it, it was his bday. And Will Arnette is hilarious, but he was in Arrested Development too

30 Rock was really only good in its first season; everything went downhill after that and has been greatly overrated. The Office, on the other hand, just keeps getting better and better!

    13. 13

I'll tell you all what's wrong with 30 Rock. It's a cheap version of Studio 60… another prime example of the networks getting rid of the wrong shows. I mean how the hell did Seinfeld get to 11 seasons?

      14

Perhaps it's doing poorly because it's not funny??

    15. 15

Its cause 30 Rock isn't funny. It's stupid and trite. I'd rather watch a meat grinder.

    16. 16

well somehow, somewhere someone will blame president bush for this as well.

    17. 17

tina fey is SO overrated.. ever since she did sarah palin people think she's a comedic genius.. 30 rock is overrated too but i LOVE the office!

    18. 18

The only reason 30 Rock has any Emmy's at all is probably because Lorne Michaels produces it and he is very respected in the Academy. I think the Academy feels as if they HAVE to give Lorne Michael's show the comedy award because he created the most popular comedy sketch show ever (SNL of course). It's unfair to better, more deserving shows.

Don't watch it myself but it is critically acclaimed, but peer and press awards do not translate into viewers. If they did we would all be watching PBS each night. NBC is so fucked up right now and the Jay situation is not helping.

    20. 20

horrible promotion! i didn't even know it was the premiere until last night when it popped up on my tivo…. they could have done a much better job. that being said, wasn't the best season premiere was it?

    21. 21

      -
It is odd. I think Baldwin, Fey and Morgan are all very funny on their own. However, the show is awful - just plain unfunny.
      -
It only lasted this long because industry insider liked it. One too many inside jokes for the great unwashed I guess.
      -

    22. 22

its because they promote their political views. the majority of Americans are still conservative

    23. 23

Everyone's watching MLB or Big Bang Theory

    24. 24

It's because it's competing with Grey's and Fringe. I love them all, but my DVR only allows for 2 simultaneous shows to record.

    25. 25

tracy morgan is the weak link in 30 rock … I liked him on SNL

    26. 26

I quit watching it because Tina Fey is way too political for me and so is that fat ass Baldwin. I'm sick of celebs pushing their agenda down my throat.

    27. 27

It is on agains Greys, Fringe, and the baseball playoffs. It has nothing to do with the quility of the show. Just to much competition. You really know how to stir it up. Make something out of nothing. Good work.

    28. 28

      Re: bev7894

Yes. The only skit i liked from Fey was her Palin sketch. And she did that sketch AFTER SHE LEFT LEFT SNL!!!!!

    29. 29

A good film to watch that refers to extraprdinary control that corporations have over televison is 'The Late Shift'. You can see the decision making that went down indiciding the fate of letterman and leno back in 1993. Point is, they have regained control of major studios and its not easy to do something that is groundbreaking, so they pick up 'safe' comedies like a 30 rock, banking on the fact that the show is basically about the life of Tina Fey on SNL.
Go see Paranormal Activity, and you will see what can be done with $15,000 and a camera.

    30. 30

That is what NBC gets for insisting on keeping the ever-shiteous Parks & Rec on tv and having the monstrosity precede 30 Rock. People tune out the moment Parks comes on and they do not turn back to NBC when 30 Rock comes on because they are immersed in another show. When will NBC learn that we don't want "filler" like Parks…it sucks! Stop giving shows to these SNL people who barely made us laugh on SNL and now you are going to give them their own shows?! Stop!

    31. 31

Most people don't know what's funny without a laugh track telling them. Also, I had to DIG through NBC's website to figure out when the premier was. There was no promotion.

    32. 32

What's wrong? Lame, unfunny, lorne-michaels-cock-sucking Tina Fey is terrible, that's what's wrong.

    33. 33

Re: Nostradamus – you are clearly deluded. tracy morgan is HILARIOUS. you wouldn't know funny if it sat on your face.

    34. 34

Re: caravaggio the terrible – that has nothing to do with 30 rock. have you ever seen the show? that's the problem. people won't give it a chance. it's hilarious, and tina fey is a comedic genius. watch the oprah episode from season 3. she packed so much funny into 30 minutes i almost couldn't believe it.. the episode was intricate with sub-plots too. what i love about 30 rock is that each episode is relatively self-contained. also it's unexpectedly funny.

    35. 35

Re: mEEEE – totally disagree. the office relies way too much on our attachment to jim and pam. they weren't in the last episode and i couldn't make myself pay attention to it.

    36. 36

I stopped watching because Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin are FAR too political. Most people watch TV to be entertained, not lectured.

Re: ilovejames – I think Thursday night is a tough night in general.
I think you may be mistaken about Parks and Req. It is on at 8:30 and is therefore not the usual lead in for 30 Rock but rather the Office is. I am in the huge minority here but I actually like Parks and Req. I seriously don't know why but I do. Parks is seriously on life support though.

    38. 38

i love the show but it's at the same time as Grey's Anatomy so i didnt see it 30 rock

    39. 39

….Yes you can blame Jay….who watches NBC? It is a washed up network. How much longer can they milk SNL and Law & Order? Hard to believe that not so long ago NBC was number 1.

    40. 40

the show SUCKS!!! I don't think it's funny in the slightest

    41. 41

      Re: latinafantastica

latinafantastica (love the name) I have watched the show, and id like to agree with you but i cant. Just because its format funny, that doesn't prove its edge for me. Alec Baldwin is unbelieveable as a host on snl, he holds it down on the 30 rock show, b ut again as many have commented, what kills it is the injection of repeated heavy on left leaning politics. They have no shame. Im a political atheist and i dont gentroflect upon any party or politician, but I think television (NBC in particular) has made a grave mistake in revealing its political leanings. Again my opinion is not for everyone, but it it clear that television is in trouble.

    42. 42

      Re: latinafantastica

In reference to Oprah. Television is too saturated with its lack of self confidence. Reality shows, Donahue rip-offs. thats what it has come to. Cheap money made from cheap reactions. And they dont care. Easy money. Now Oprah is the creation of Barry Diller out of LA and Chicago. HE made her. She was doing morton downey jr, jerry springer type stuff when she started, and she takes herself wayyyyyy too seriously regardless of how much she banks. Very nice set design though, but phony as hell. Right now in television the networks know that they have a surge in black viewership of television across th board, as where white viewership 18-48 male demo has declined, follow the trends….

    43. 43

Our family is a Nielsen family. (It's actually our second time- which is very weird.) Anyway, I will not have our tv on that channel, because I hate those stars' politics. They are very outspoken about it, and this is my very fun way of getting revenge. Being a Nielsen family is the best!!!!

    44. 44

RE: Neilson family…….. having been a Neilson family I know you are bound not to disclose you are a Neilson family. They have ways of tracking comments re your TV viewing.

    45. 45

Ugh! I will never watch a show with that Baldwin ass hole in it…

    46. 46

Simple. The show is not that good. Very bad acting, like they really don't care. Corny plots and jokes disguised as supposedly clever dialog. Baldwin thinks he's hot shit. Morgan is an ass. Why it keeps winning emmys is beyond me. There are so many other better comedy shows that try harder.

    47. 47

30 Rock is a great and intelligent comedy, the best on TV so far, the problem is not 30 ROCK the problem is NBC.-They are losing their audience, people do not respect them anymore.

    48. 48

coz the show is overrated. I just can't sit through an episode, so boring.

    49. 49

I would blame it on people not being able to pay their cable bill!!! :) I know thats my problem along with a lot of other bills LOL

    50. 50

Thursday at 9:00 is a hot time slot.NBC's comedies are up against Greys Anatomy,CSI,Supernatural and Fringe(my favorite).Thank god for TIVO:)

    51. 51

I was intrigued by 30 Rock when it won Emmy awards in its first season. So I checked it out. I was bored throughout most of the episode. It had some funny moments but not laugh-out-loud funny.

    52. 52

Bad time slot. It's always on when I'm watching something else.
