Leno's Primetime Takeover Is Doing Serious Damage To NBC
We were all for letting Jay Leno get a new show after he left The Tonight Show. The guy still has some kick to him; he deserves to stay on the airwaves.
However, NBC's risky gamble in giving the late-night legend a permanent spot on their primetime line-up is looking like it isn't paying off. So far, several decent shows have been given the axe due to the scheduling conflicts and now, local newscasts are feeling the burn as well.
Most stations broadcast their local news in the 10 P.M. time slot, the time Jay Leno now has his comedy hour. The ratings for the NBC affiliates that now have to bump their local news broadcasts to 11 P.M. because of Jay have plummeted, as viewership has moved to other networks still airing local news in the ten o'clock hour.
As with any program, but mostly for local news, viewership is key in gaining more advertising and building the revenue of the NBC empire. In fact, local stations make up for a third of the network's revenue. That is probably just covering Jay's paycheck.
They're calling this decline in viewership the "Leno Effect" and it'll be interesting to see how long this will continue before NBC has to pull the plug on Jay, simply to stay afloat. They're already barely keeping above water.
Time to make some changes!

the issue isn't that local newscasts are being forced to push their evening news to 11, that's not how affiliates work.
The issue is Leno is so terrible, that people turn the channel and don't watch the NBC affiliates' evening news, they stay on CBS or whoever. Leno is a terrible lead-in.
As hard as it is to imagine, NBC found a way to make their primetime block even worse!
Don't need the chin. He should take his money and run.

Move local news to 10, bump Leno to 10:30, Leno leads into Conan, into Fallon, problem solved.
Leno is great. Funnier than Conan IMO. Conan used to be funny. Not sure what the hell happened after he took over the Tonight Show. That would suck if they give Jay the boot again. They shouldn't have done it the 1st time. NBC is retarded.

Sad because eventually Leno is going to leave the airways on a low note as opposed to the class with which he left "The Tonight Show". One of NBC's (rare) hit shows both when originally aired and in repeats, that has taken a serious hit in the ratings is "Law and Order SVU". Even given that the show is past its prime, the move from Tuesday to Wednesday and from 10pm to 9pm has seriously hurt the show. In fact Ice T was on Conan and made a point of reminding viewers of the move. NBC is fucked.
They should move Leno back to 11:30 and Kick Conan back to 12:30 or out. Conan is not funny. Jay is funny but I've noticed that his show competiting with prime time has brought out a lot of silly sketches. I used to watch Jay because he made me laugh. Now, his show is filled with stupid unfunny sketches and telling guests that they have to earn their appearance by making them do a lot of stupid things. I don't like his new show.
BRING BACK THE OLD JAY.
I always forget the show is on at that time after so may years at 11:30. The new set-up is not to my liking and it's just not funny either. Moving Conan was such a huge mistake.
Once Leno had Rush Limbaugh on, I knew I'd never watch his show again. This will rank up there with one of the worst decisions ever in television history. Right up there with "Cop Rock" and "Manimal".

Not sure how perez could mess up a simple concept. It seems that you have some of the facts wrong. News has traditionally been at 11 pm. The edger tv shows were at 10 pm. The ones that would get good ratings for that time slot. Like the CSI shows, law and order. Then the people watching those shows would hold on to the same channel and watch the news at 11 pm. Leno is not know for high ratings and at 10 pm. You need them. When leno was on late night it did not matter how bad the show was. He had a following that did not care. I am glad that people are finally realizing that Jay is just not very funny or original. No one seemed to care when it was buried in the middle of the night. This decision was doomed from the first moment it was announced. Although Conan is funnier the Jay he should never have left the comfort of the later time slot. He had a specific and loyal audience and that is different then the one at 11:30. The conservitive crowd that watched leno is not the same peopel that watched Conan.
They should put him at a late night spot. Problem solved!

Your story doesn't make sense. NBC has always had three hours of primetime programming and then local news. That hasn't changed. Jay Leno is on in the third hour, not when local news is on.
Oops, got your facts wrong. Local news has always aired at 11pm ET/ 10pm Central. They haven't been bumped back.

can't believe someone who knows so much about show biz can mess this up.
east coast has news at 11. all other time zones have news at 10. nothing is being "pushed back".
but the big problem is the ratings jay's show brings in, although at a much lower cost than say L & O SUV, are so low that it is killing the audience lead in to the local news, that you have right.
on average, local 1/3 of their revenue comes from these broadcasts.
in my opinion, jay's show is as un-funny as his old show. even the funny bits jay lifts from howard's show (there are many) become insipid in jay's hands.

I watched him the first few nights he was on in the new time slot, but it was sort of a drag. Then the old whore went after the crazy people to get his ratings jumped up, and brought Rush Limbaugh on and I said, "bye, bye!" Forever. Jay is Over. Jay is *ded* to me. He should just do specials six times a year, and get ready to take Larry King's place. He has all that money. He could be doing something really smart and nice for PBS if he wanted to be relevant, but no. He was that $$$$. Pig.

Jay Leno should have just stayed on The Tonight Show, because he was not ready to hang it up, and he was worth every $$$, however Conan O'Brien is not so funny and they should just bump him back to his old spot and fix everything !
I've not watched Leno and don't plan to. They should have left him on the "Tonight Show" because that now sucks too w/that non-interviewer, non-funny Conan O'Brien.
the problem is that the show is on five nights a week during a prime time slot-then the tonight show w/conan is on almost immediately after leno's show-its tooo much of the same thing. leno's show is destined to fail which is a shame because he has done so much for the tonight show, etc. maybe is the execs had rethought this and just decided to continue leno on the tonight show and found another vehicle for conan-now this would have been a better idea….
Uh, where in the world is news on at 10!? Perez, you're mistaken over and over again. Remember that little show NBC had called, you know, ER!? That was on for over 10 years!? Yeah, that was on at 10. I think the issue is that Leno just sucks and can't hold a candle to the other shows running at 10pm on other networks.
