Mexico Launches Pink Taxis For Women

Well this seems like a good solution for the time being!
In Puebla, Mexico a privately funded venture, Pink Taxi de Puebla, has been launched to provide a safer, harassment-free transportation option for women in the city.
The cabs are bright pink and driven by female taxi drivers only for women only. Depending on the success of the program, the Pink Taxis could be expanded to other cities.
Some women's rights activists aren't pleased arguing that it doesn't get to the root of the problem. While this may be true, presently it seems like a decent option for women who are fed up with being treated poorly by male taxi drivers. One of the taxi drivers explains:
"Some of the women who have been on board tell us how male taxi drivers cross the line and try to flirt with them and make inappropriate propositions. They won't have that feeling of insecurity, and they feel more relaxed."
Not only do the pink taxis have a tracking device and emergency alarm buttons, but also beauty supplies available by request!

This is also done in Dubai. It is a good idea, for place where women are frequently harassed by taxi drivers. This will let women feel a little more safe though lets hope they are not an attraction for men to stalk pink taxis.
Fantastic!! I see no problem with this. This is like the millions of women-only gyms in the USA (not Curves) only to a more serious degree. No one wants to be harassed and made to feel fearful. I'm all yay-feminism, but women are slightly more vulnerable that men in situations like this… especially in Mexico!!

LOVE IT! Been to Mexico and also had a bad experience with male cab drivers.. presently living in BA Arg and sometimes I still get harrassed by male cab drivers. Machistas think they could say anything to a woman.. very uncomfy! Go pink!

I think its great! I visit Puebla and I wish I could travel alone instead of with my boy cousins but its not safe for me to travel in the city alone so I love it!

I like the idea. As I woman I feel its more safer to have a female taxi driver than a man. The taxis look cute. Taxis for women driven by women. They should expand that it all Latin America.
We have something like that at my university except it's free. It's fantastic-everyone loves it.

I think it's a great idea and could be used anywhere! There are issues with rapes, muggings, harassment, etc. and it's a fantastic way to cut down on crime.

I think it's a good idea. True, it isn't a solution, but I would like knowing that I could get a taxi without some sleazy dude hitting on me. And yes, it does happen even to fat old bags like me.

Wow i think this is great option for women in Mexico. Although it doesn't solve the problem keeping people safe is what matters. It must be awful for the women who get harassed when they take a taxi, this must be such a relief and comfort to them.
I think it's a great idea! With everything going on in Mexico, as far as how women are being treated, take example Juarez, something like this isn't a complete solution but a step towards helping the treatment of women/ preventing these harrassing acts.

They've had these in the UK for years now. I'm 20 and I was using them when I was 16 to get to and from different clubs.

we've had this service running in Lebanon, Beirut late 2008. Pink taxis mostly for female, children and families and the cars are driven by females aswell and the cars are pink peugeot 206's. I'm just saying its not new

ok so here's the problem, the point of these cabs is to create a nonhostile, safe environment for women but shouldn't we be aiming our efforts towards the actual ppl doing the harassing i.e. instead of us making efforts to help women be free of violent or hostile men shouldn't we get mom to stop harassing

Now, we all know this and have known this for years, but how exactly do you resolve to get this accomplished? If we had a good solution to end all the harassment we get from men on a regular basis, then we would have implemented it already, wouldn't we?! For now, this "Pink Taxi idea" is better than what we have to abate the problem right now - which is in fact, NOTHING!

My friend was harassed by a cab driver. He took her on the wrong route home and parked somewhere that she was unfamiliar with and begged her to have sex with him. Luckily nothing happened and she managed to get out of the car and get away. She is now absolutely terrified of taking cabs and will not take a cab alone. Many cab drivers have made inappropriate comments to me as well, asking if I have a boyfriend and asking for my phone number. It makes for a very uncomfortable cab ride but I am very glad nothing has happened to me like what happened to my friend. I would definitely take a pink cab and I am sure my friend would be comfortable taking a pink cab alone. I just wonder what would happen if say a group of three girls and one guy hailed a pink cab. Would it be strictly women only?
Now that they think that their problems are gone, there's gonna be a new and different type of problems they got their hands on.
Most women truckers and taxi drivers are more masculine than their male counterparts. This time the propositions will be coming from women drivers, themselves, and beware because it is much harder to discipline them. Lesbians are more aggressive than men in pursuing their mates.
Just an opinion by inference.
If harassment is a problem then I think this is a fantastic, innovative "fix." There are some "women's rights activists" who are going to complain about anything… which is a shame because they tarnish the efforts of everyday feminists like the women who began this business.

In a country like Mexico, it is a wonderful Idea!!!! I'm of Mexican decent and I visit Mexico only if I have to due to family, I don't feel safe there at all.

normally i would say no to something like this but thast if it was in a country like australia or america, in mexico women can be taken advantage of very quickly, and then they can face shame from there family or the cops. its not stopping the problem but maybe while there working on stoping the problem it can save a few more womens rights to there body.

I think it's a good idea. I went to Mexico a few year back and a lot of the taxi drivers are pervs. Inside taxis, the drivers would put a mirror that was crotch level so they could look up girls skirts as they sat in the back seat. I think the idea of female taxi drivers is a good idea!
Too bad America can't launch something like this. Our economy's not as good as Mexico's … what with all that outsourcing and them.. umm TAKING OUR JOBS. Down with Mexico, BUILD THAT WALL. END NAFTA.
And there is a Mexican airline, Interjet, that features a PINK RESTROOM. No men are allowed in it, it´s in the back of the place and it looks and smells clean. I don´t know if this is happening in other countries, but I book flights there for THAT reason.
Sounds like a good idea to me. I never feel comfortable in a cab, but if it was a pink cab I think it would feel safer, plus the extras like the tracking device make it a smart choice, I would think.

Instead of getting women used to segregation, the taxi commission should make it easy to report complaints and revoke the taxi licenses of male drivers who can't behave professionally.
This is a GREAT idea. People have no idea how much woman and children are victimized, raped and even killed in Mexico. Woman and children go missing every day, and it's great that they're making strides to provide safe transportation for them. Especially at night. Two thumbs up.
My first thouht on this was that now everybody would know that only women were in these taxis and they would become targets…but maybe not…i guess time wull tell.it does suck to be constantly harrassd by any and every mansometimes i have to tell myself …they know not what they do….
I think this is an amazing idea! I live in a suburb outside of detroit and the idea of a taxi totally freaks me out. I rode in one, one time and I will never do it again! The driver was totally disgusting and wouldnt stop hitting on me, on top of it all I was pregnant so I think this is a great solution to make women feel alot safer. Granted feminist think this is a horrible idea more than likely but this isnt a perfect world and there are too many men out there that like to take advantage of what they think are the weaker sex.
It's so sad what has become of Mexico. Thank God for this program. I only think of the victims of Ciudad Juarez and so many others. The fact that it is a dangerous place to travel alone when it is such a beautiful country. I hope this and other programs like this and better ones come into existence for the sake of making a safe community as much as possible. !Que viva mi Mexico libre!

Also, I have never forgotten the Matamoros killings and satanism/santeria that the drug cartels employ in their schizophrenic beliefs of power:( It makes me so sad because so many innocent and poor are stripped of their very freedom and never heard from again and no one seems to either care or be able to do right by them. The womens rights activists want equal rights correct? so why create a barrier and separate women and men from the same rights, now they are stereotyping men and discriminating against men. you mean to tell me there are no gay women that are employed, or that all gay women wont flirt with passengers.. i see the point, and sounds like the service in essence works well ..just don't claim that is for womens rights.

i say definitely! i'm not a feminist by any means, but i was sexually harassed by a male taxi driver in cancun nearly 9 years ago, and it creeps me out to think that kind of behavior is so rampant in mexico. do what you gotta do!
How soon can we get these in New York?! This is a fantastic idea. While it is not a solution to the problem of harassment or the dangers of allowing some strange man in a strange car drive you to your front door, it is a start. I can understand why some may find it sexist or alienating, but I think it makes the taxi process much safer. It can be very uncomfortable AND scary being driven home late at night by a stranger trying to make a pass at you. If they drop you off at your home or apartment, now they know where you live and could pursue you further if they were creepy and so inclined. At least in a pink cab late at night, I wouldn't have to be worried that my cabbie might turn down an alleyway and rape or hurt me.
