Save The Seals

One of the best things about having a widely-read website is being able to share our thoughts about important issues. From gay rights to health care reform, Perez has spoken out repeatedly about social concerns that matter to him. That's why we jumped at the chance to star in PETA's 'Save the Seals' Celebrity Ad Campaign.

Every year, sealers bash in the skulls of baby seals and hook them in their eyes, cheeks or mouths, then drag them across the ice – sometimes while they are still conscious!

This is disgusting and wrong!!!!

The European Union and the U.S. have banned seal fur. And world leaders as diverse as Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Obama have condemned the massacre of baby seals.

Get with it, Canada!

We are so outraged by this unnecessary cruelty! We've taken part in the 'Save the Seals' Celebrity Ad Campaign alongside Kelly Osbourne, Jennie Garth, and more. And we encourage our Perezcious readers to CLICK HERE to find out what YOU can do to help!

Please join us in trying to STOP the seal slaughter!

    That's sweet

  2. 2

    I love jennie garth.

  3. 3

    SAVE THE SEALS-CLUB MARIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. 4

I've seen those videos of what they do to those poor baby seals and all I want to do is sniper those sick bastards who have the audacity to commit such a horrible act! If there are too many seals let the whales do the job as nature intended.

  5. 5

Nice that you're giving into the false Peta image of the seal hunt.

But hey that's okay. Where's protecting cute little baby seals anyways (which I might add is NOT what they hunt)

Lets completely decimate a towns economy and lets all save the seals and watch them starve to death on the cost because they over populated.

  6. 6

That is the best photo of you ever!!

  7. 7

Blow Me Perez! The last thing Canada needs is advice from YOU!

  8. 8

So I guess this means that PETA really couldn't care less about the seal hunt. If they did, why would they use a z-lister like Internet cockroach Perez Hilton as the spokesmouth for their cause.
By the way Perez, there is a reason that the exclamation point is called a "hype flag". When you pepper !!!! all through your text, you're alerting people to your nonsense and your message loses all credibility. Let that be a lesson to you.

  9. 9

Looking Good Perez!!! Keep up the good work bb! :)

  10. 10

Too bad nobody is listening to you. You're a joke.

  11. 11

AWESOME WORK PEREZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And can I say you've never looked better? GOOD FOR YOU! :-D

  12. 12

Nope. Don't agree with this 100%. A different method for the hunt, yes. It's a cultural thing and matter of survival for the Inuit and they don't waste one bit of the seal. People see a white fuzzy cute seal and go ballistic. Don't pass judgement. I don't like to watch a seal getting beat over the head either. They should just shoot them in the head and to do it quicker. Also, only allow natives to be allowed to participate in the hunt. But to ban the hunt 100% is foolish.

  13. 13

i would like to thank perez for this, and more importantly for not taking off his clothes like real celebrities do

  14. 14

you are looking guapo! AND for a good cause…save the seals!

  15. 15

Kudos to Perez for Saving the Seals! and the shirt is adorable!! xoxo.

  16. 16

FUCK YOU PEREZ! You know NOTHING about the lifestyles of the people in the hunt!! Most people need this…do a bit of fucking research you twat!

  17. 17

Perez, You look great! Thanks for being a voice for the seals!

  18. 18

Sure, cute seals. Would you care if it was a hideous rat?
Would you care to know that many of Canada's indigenous communities survive off of this seal hunt, and have been doing so for hundreds of years?
Would you also care to know that there is an overpopulation of these fuzzy friends who overeat the fish in the sea, dis balancing the ecosystem?

Don't impose your ridiculous Hollywood "perspective" onto a world that you can't understand.

  19. 19

    that's sweet of you!
&nd you're right, whe have to save them!

  20. 20

This is soooooooooo disgusting. By the way Perez, you look quite hansome in this ad. Your hard work is really paying off!!!

  21. 21

You look nice in the photo - why cant you look like this all the time?

  22. 22

Mario - you're looking pretty good, sweetie. Keep it up.

  23. 23

I love you, and thank you.

  24. 24

You're awesome Perez! Saving the baby seals has always been the most important fight to me! I'd go up there & club the buthchers myself if I had the means to do so! Please do everything you can to help stop this horrifying practice!

  25. 25

Hey Perez, do you know how rambling Z-listers like yourself affect the local native population that depends on seal hunting to survive? You reek of ignorance, and so does this cause. Do some research on ring seals and how the seals eat up all the fish when they're overpopulated before you go and troop out for a flashy cause to elevate your own b-s website. Save the Inuit, not the seals, dumbass!

  26. 26

fuck off, Canada is doing just as much as US :|

  27. 27

I need me some new boots so the slaughter must continue! I wish someone would club Perez and drag him across the ice.

  28. 28

That's funny that you would site Vladimir Putin. He loves seals yet drinks Chechian childrens blood!Next your going to tell us your planning a gay rights parade for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

  29. 29

This is absolutely absurd. I completely disagree with people being against this completely sustainable, ecological, and ancient hunting technique. The only reason in which it is getting so much attention is due to the fact that they are "cute". I wish people would do their research before condemning it and realize it not any less humane than the killing of cows, pigs, and the mass killings in chicken farms.

  30. 30

GOOD JOB! i love it =)

  31. 31

Of for crying out loud, Perez! How could you join with those CRAZY people at PETA?
You make fun on Tom Cruise and his Scientology but PETA is A THOUSAND times worse.
If you want to save the seals, then fine, do what you can, but no one who has a brain is going to take your serious if you team up with PETA.

  32. 32

    Re: mel715 – Two words:Photo Shop

  33. 33

People have been doing this for hundreds of years and because some people are insulted by it they should change there way of living? Screw you Perez and screw PETA. I am all for animal rights, but these seals have it coming to them. They aren't going extinct.

  34. 34

this is a side of you, you should embrace more often, perez. see, you do something respectable AND you even look damn fine in that pic.

  35. 35

Also, do you have any idea how those hamburgers and hot dogs you scarf back are made? Now THAT is disgusting! Ahh hamburgers…the only way to eat 1000 cows at once…

  36. 36

Great another (pseudo) celeb buying into the PeTA Kool-Ade. Stump for them to save the seals, but conveniently forget that PeTA routinely kills animals right here in the US of A every day… and I'm talking housepets they're supposed to be adopting out. It's no wonder that the "ethical" part of their name is in lowercase letters.

Support the ASPCA - it's not stocked full of crazies who don't understand that Fishkill isn't about killing fish, it's a Dutch name.

  37. 37

Oh, by the way, the sealers have lived in that region for hundred of years. They are native to that region. It's their economy and livelyhood. Why would only «natives» have the right to hunt seals?

  38. czar says – reply to this

Canada's seal hunt is a native tradition that has been taking place for longer than anyone can remember. many of the hunters are from remote northern areas and this is their main source of income for the year. In Canada's remote north survival is difficult at best. Many of our indigenous people has suffered greatly by the hands of Europeans and hunting traditions were lost along with language at residential schools. After losing traditional hunting knowledge many people cannot live off the land as it once was. By removing the rights to hunt our people go hungry and we are helping the ethnocide of our indigenous people. Stop. Look. Learn.

  39. 39

If you want to really have a positive effect on the world, look into where your food comes from. Watch Food, Inc. for starters. Trace the food chain. Look into Monsanto's stranglehold on American farms. Research genetically modified foods. Besides being unnatural and detrimental to all of us, the seed producers own the rights to the seeds so no farmer can save seeds for new crops. Monasnato sues them until they are broke and can fight no more. Look at how animals are treated for dairy and meat products. It's criminal. Did you know raising cattle is the number one contributor to global warming? I think some people point at the seal hunts instead of the the biggest culprits because the main problem is just so huge and widespread. I hope you'll consider speaking up against factory farming and industrial agriculture. Look into. Be shocked. And then act.

  40. 40

The seal hunt is a vital part of many Inuit economies and getting rid of this 'horrific' seal hunt would destroy the already vulnerable economies of many small villages in the Canadian North. There is no alternative. It is not trophy hunting for the people who do it. Every part of the seal is used. It controls seal over-population and has been a sustainable resource for Inuit people for God knows how many generations. Before you start lambasting something like this, look at it from both sides, please.

  41. 41

Actually the majority of seals hunted are NOT babies. It's illegal to hunt white coats. So perhaps Perez and Peta should "get with it" and get informed before perpetuating myths and false information. The mass meat industry (which I'm sure Perez partakes of if he does eat meat) is much less humane and more cruel than the seal industry.

  42. 42

Perez I think you're the greatest…but as a Canadian, from Newfoundland, I wish that you and Peta and everyone else would get their facts straight. Newfoundland is a province whose residents benefit greatly from the seal hunt, with my father participating every year. I have seen sealing first hand and let me just tell you that you do NOT have all the facts. Baby seals or "whitecoats" are no longer hunted and haven't been for years. The "barbaric" way of hunting with a staff is being replaced with shooting. But most importantly, how can you say that regulated hunting of an overpopulated seal population for a few months out of the year is barbaric, inhumane and cruel, when in the US, every year around 35 million cows and 10 BILLION chickens are raised then slaughtered for the sole purpose of dying for our food? I'd like to know which is actually more cruel?

  43. 43

To the idiots that support this, maybe you should watch a video of a seal being knocked out with a bat. No animal should be treated this way!! Canada disgusts me!

  44. 44

fuck the seals, fur is murder… but it keeps you oh so warm!

  45. 45

Wuhhh, you look hot there. Like really, I want to bang you.

  46. 46

Perez I love your site and that you are into all these causes but the fact that you jumped on the PETA band waggon shows me that you don't research your causes. If you had researched this issue you would have realized that they do not kill baby seals and the seals are actually over populated. The seal hunt is the livly hood for many Newfoundlanders and PETA is trying to distroy it, because the seal is a cute animal. When PETA starts complaining about how a fish dies then I might take them seriously. They only care about the cute animals.

Really wish you had done some research first :(

  47. 47

Ummm, the people who live there are hunting and eating what is available. They are behind in technology, is that something we should FORCE on them? Grass and veggies are not very common in a land of ice and snow, yet we want them to be vegetarians or starve to death? How many dogs did peta kill? What does peta do with all the animals it "rescues?"

And, Perez, your eyes are very dialated in this picture. You wouldn't be a hypocrite and doing drugs on the side and then screaming about drug use on your site, now would you?

  48. 48

Great job perez!! I saw the video and it disgusted me, if people still need seal fur… buy faux fur… honestly.

  49. 49

You are misinformed about the Canadian seal hunt. Baby white coats have not been hunted since 1987 (the picture of the cute seal on your t-shirt is wrong - only older grey seals are hunted) . Seals eat thousands of pounds of cod annually and, without the sea hunt, there would be no cod. Plus … the seal hunt provides a source of income for maritimers. There is a quota … just like with other animals (deer, moose) … but, alas, the misinformed tree huggers still trot out that cute white-furred seal and tell people they are being bludgeoned. NOT TRUE!

  50. 50

Re: rachelleio – I for one never said killing of cows, pigs, and the mass killings in chicken farms was humane.

  51. Nekha says – reply to this

    Go Perez :)

  52. 52

I admit there is always a better way to finish the job quick but to torture an innocent animal is just not fair by any means, however we keep telling Peta that in Canada we still have Inuit's who don't have coushy fireplace heated homes, gardens to grow food in there 10 month arctic seasons and markets to buy clothes from. They still live in the Pioneer days where Animal fur and blubber is the only way they can heat their homes and make clothes so that they dont die in their -40 degree weather with winds reaching up to 100km/hr! Which is more cruel Perez? Telling people that they are no longer allowed to fend for themselves 3000miles away from civilization just because you have it made, or to save the poor little animal's who's blood is what allowed humanity to even get this far in life? If you do your history you'd find that God didnt like us which is why when the last 10,000 humans were around there was no vegetation just rock hard ground with no fresh water and salt water fish so screw you and Peta!

  53. 53

The thing about the controversy about the seal hunt is that there is a lot of misinformation out there about it.

Seals are killed using a hakapik. It is proven to be the most humane way to kill a seal. In order to have a license to hunt seal, you have to apprentice a licensed seal hunter for 2 years after you have taken a course on how to hunt a seal. "Baby" seals are not hunted. This is illegal and false information.

They are hit once in the head, which kills the seal instantly. They are not stabbed through the eyes or the mouth and dragged across the ice while still alive.
The seal hunt is also constantly watched and monitored by not only government agencies but by the media.

If you are going to protest the seal hunt, you should also be protesting the deer/moose/cow/rabbit/chicken hunt. Because, unlike the seal hunt, you do not need to apprentice under a veteran hunter in order to hunt deer, or any other wild game. Anyone can apply for a license and go out into the woods and do god knows what.

Why is one animal more important than another?
This is just the "it" thing to be against.

  54. 54

    Save a seal, club perez

  55. 55

What about cows, chickens, pigs, rabbits — any farmed animal. They're treated with incredible cruelty for years at a time. Maybe the issue is demand not supply. Try other sources of protein. Many cultures have survived with great health without animal products. Eating meat is a sick luxury, not a necessity.

  56. 56

I just love you, Perez! Someday, I hope you will extend to cows, pigs, and all other animals the same compassion as baby seals. I just know there is a vegan lurking inside you.

  57. 57

    You look REALLY HOT here!!

  58. 58

I can't believe you would put your support behind PETA….save the seals…sure…but PETA? They are a terrorist organization. You should do more reading about charities/groups before promoting them.

  59. 59

Umm, the US government kills 1 million people in Iraq and you are worried about a few thousand seals that have been killed every year for the past 100 years?
    You can't be serious.
You are also incredibly ignorant on Canada's aboriginal culture and customs.

I expected better from you Perez.

  60. 60

Perez youre so sweet! I like you even more now!

  61. 61

In Canada, since more than 20 years, it's illegal to kill baby seals. But nobody to Peta said that. Mayby because a baby seal is cute!!!

  62. 62

Well i am glad to see more then just the "we gots ta save da baby sealz!!11!!!" comments i expected.
This is not a straight forward issue. Yes, the hunt is painful to watch and much could be done to make their methods more humane. However, when you take away the seal hunt whole towns and villages lose their entire way of life. They lose the only way they have to put food on the table for their children. The other side of the that is what seals do to the fish (particularily the cod) population. we are losing fish from all of the oceans at an alarming rate and they are much more engangered then these seals are. I understand that fish do not pull at the hear strings the way a big eyed, fluffy white seal does but they are just as inportant to our eco system. Also, as someone said already, it is not the babies they are killing.
I truly love animals, in fact i am a vegetarian , but we need to try to stop jumping to immediate decisions based on the pull to our heart strings. Do a little research and make a an educated decision. If you still feel the seal hunt is wrong, that is absolutely your right. I just ak that it is an informed decision you are making.

  63. tbuck says – reply to this

i am from canada and had no idea this was even going on! i am a huge animal lover and agree that what they are doing is discusting!!!!!!! now that perez has informed me i will be taking a stand against this cruitly. i dont want the world to associate canada to hurting animals since it does not properly represent us. thank you perez!

  64. 64

Do you know that Peta KILLS approximately 95% of the dogs it rescues each year? Difficult for me to support them on any level

  65. 65

  66. 66

I am not against killing animals for food, overpopulation, etc. But there is a more humane way to kill them then to crush their skulls and leave them in pain. When you kill an animal, make sure it is not concious or in pain. Every species population can be monitored but should be handled as humanely as possible.

  67. 67

    Get with it, Canada?
FUCK YOU perez, the natives of this land are doing it because that is how they live of the land
    you fucking self absorbed asshole
you know nothing about Canada or how we do things
we don't do things out of malicious intent unlike your stupid fucking cuuuuntry,.

  68. 68

    Re: notlori
Also, if you are going to endorse something, you should research something FULLY, and not just believe everything that is fed to you.
Also, when you have a popular, highly read website, you have a responsibility to ensure that the information you put out there, is correct. Especially when it is not gossip-related.

  69. 69

Perez can you stay out of this? We don't kill baby seals, the seal hunt is strictly regulated and 100% of the seal is used. The jobs provided are important to the people who seal hunt. Why are you doing this in October anyway - the seal hunt isn't until spring. Seal meat is delicious and provides meat to a lot of families that would be starving otherwise, seal skin is great for cold weather waterproof gear. Seals are exploding in population and decimating local fish stocks. Get informed Perez.

  70. 70

Re: nomofo – I'll take rezers seriously if he only eats cardboard and drinks water. That's the real peta way of life!

  71. 71

didn't know a whale was interested in saving seals

  72. 72

I live in Canada and it is the biggest thing that shames us! Sooooo disgusting!!!

But also save the sharks that the American's cut the fins off each year for fucking soup and then leave to bleed to death!

    Get with it too America!

  73. 73

Re: zach swan – hype flag is a terminology used by idiot people who don't understand or appreciate the english language. you are one of the millions decimating the english language. i shudder to think what future generations are going to be exposed to. the true art of language is being lost.

  74. 74

Please get all the facts befor you promote something that has nothing to do with your country or its inuit people!!

  75. 75

that's awesome of you, perez. i created an account just now for the sole purpose of commenting on this, my respect for you just shot up. stop the seal hunts!

  76. 76

Re: Joe Canada – As a fellow Canadian I'm in complete agreement with you, I love our neighbours but for a country that has so much hatred between their own people and have racial crimes and murders galore, not just all their killing in the middle east, they seem to care more about these seals then they do about their own people. Now Perez, go eat some more donuts and stay out of Canada or we will have to get Will I Am to slap you out again next time you cross the 49th

  77. 77

I love how these disgusting people (if I can even refer to them as such, since human beings should be compassionate) feel that this is a "cultural" thing as if these people CAN'T find any other way of supporting themselves. *Rolls eyes* these seals are STRICTLY killed for their fur, if they were eating them I would feel alittle differently but they are NOT. Also to the dumbasses saying that there would be an "overpopulation" listen assholes the world is OVER POPULATED BY HUMANS! When Europeans first landed on Canadian soil there were 30 MILLION seals and they were doing just fine now there is approximately 1-5 MILLION. I wish I could club some of you idiots in the head.

  78. 78

I sent a message, its a bit cheesy but hey ho, here it is lol:

"Well, what can I say, words can describe how inhumane the treatment of seals are in Canada. Im really disgusted. No animal should have to endure that kind of treatment, especially for the sake of fashion!
Im writing to plead that you help to bring an immediate end to the seal slaughter. Do you not think that enough animals are endangered already?
Its cruelty to animals and to slaughter baby seals infront of their mothers is awful, it makes you think, how would you feel about it if it were humans who were being slaughtered?
It has to stop, this monstrosity will kill Canada's image and give it a bad name, I know that Its certainly changed my view on Canada as im sure is the same case with lots of other people. Other countries have banned it, its time for Canada to pull its head out of the sand and get something done about it."

  79. 79

    these people are idiots.

  80. 80

first of all, we do not hunt the baby seals.
secondly, it is much less brutal than you, and the PETA, are describing.
no more so than say, killing an animal for their meat.
the only difference is that this is much more publicized.

  81. 81

P.S. to simone20 - they don't have to be beaten to death loser! I live in Canada too and I'm SURE in 2009 that a more humane way to control the ecosystem cannot be conceived, is just mental!

  82. 82

    Re: notlori

Also, the picture that you have on your t-shirt is of a pup "baby" seal. Like I stated before, these are illegal to hunt. So, your t-shirt/ad is just creating a falsehood.

  83. 83

When do you EVER talk about health care reform??? All you talk about are gay rights! Why not talk about something that effects everyone?? Oh, that's because it's a complicated issue and all you can talk about are RiRi's boots or the Gosslins.

  84. YUCK says – reply to this

fuck peta they kill more animals than they save and fuck you, you hop on any bandwagon, its really hard to take you seriously, ur a fucking joke. you are one fat seal I'd like to club to death.

  85. 85

These are the same people who held baby seals to promote their ad campaign of saving the seals. Well, all those poor baby seals died bc once the mother smells human on their baby they abandon them. WTG PETA.
I think you people need to educate yourselves first then stand up for the cause-not jump on board just bc its called a celebrity campaign and want the publicity.

  86. 86

i am shocked at this post. i wish people did more research on the seal hunt and did not just comment with the facts given. Newfoundland was once surrounded by mass amounts of fish. Thanks to over fishing by every nation except Newfoundland we are now almost deprived of this once rich resource. There is an over population of seals around and they are severely hurting the remaining population of fish. By stopping the seal hunt you are pretty much ending many peoples ways of life. There are people who depend on the seals for money. With too many seals all the fish will be eaten and then the fisherman are out of jobs also. Seal hunt is no different then fishing, or any other types of hunting but people have no problem in that. People breed bows, pigs and chickens to eat and for some reason that seems better then seal hunting? please explain that logic to me.

  87. 87

Re: notlori – Killing any animal is wrong -

  88. YUCK says – reply to this

how come your ugly saggy mouth is always so down turned almost as if you cried your entire childhood, that explains your nasty demeanor.

  89. 89

Thank you perez for doing your part to save something!

  90. 90

Re: Shelleybean – At least somebody here knows what the hell they're talking about…

Respect other people's cultures and don't try to "Americanize" them because they aren't "just like you".

  91. 91

Re: sugerqueen – Well said! I am a fellow Newfoundlander and was about to type my own comments, until I came upon yours. I agree 100% with everything you said.

  92. 92

Omg that's horrific poor seals. I love the shirt you are wearing perez.

  93. 93

perez first of all they r not HUNTING the seals..its done for population control. if there were too many seals it would be disastrous for their ecosystem. maybe you "celebrities" should actually read about the causes you are supporting before opening your mouths. i like cute little fuzzy baby seals as much as the next guy but it's irresponsible to suggest that the people who do this are awful monsters who are trying to kill things for the fun of it.

  94. 94

Perez: You look really good here!!

    Save the Seals!

  95. 95

Awesome cause!! Good on you!! Perezzers is looooking FIIIIIIIEEEEERCE!XXX

  96. 96

While I don't agree with the method, I do agree with the hunt. Being from Canada I know how important the seal hunt is to us and the ecosystem. While I do wish they could change 'how' they hunt the seals, as I don't think the disgusting way they kill them is acceptable. It must be done. The seals will destroy the fish population if they are not controlled and destroy the balance that nature holds dear. As to the comment 'let the whales control them' that would be fine, if most of the whales hadn't been killed off by hunters a while back. There are not enough of them anymore to be able to handle the rate that the seals produce and then ingest.
Keep in mind that a great deal of people make a living off of the seal hunt. The people in the North West Terr., Nunavut. and the Yukon need this hunt to survive. It's not just for lining the coats of rich woman in rich cities. Don't destroy a people over a 'squirrel' of the north. These seals are not endangered… so pick a new cute fuzzy creature to save for now.

  97. 97

It is ILLEGAL to kill baby seals in Newfoundland and most of Canada! It has been for over 20 years! Killing seals is no more inhumane than killing any other animal. Make a change in your OWN life! Stop eating meat or drinking dairy or wearing leather. It is so easy for you to preach against something that you will never be in contact with. How many Newfoundland families have you met, that survive on the seal hunt? That live in communities that still don't have access to paved roads and running water (e.g., Black Tickle NL). Try living there and then judge them. I am so sick of celebrities from southern california speaking against the seal hunt. You have enough problems in your own state, start addressing them.

  98. 98

What about those cute whitecoat seals?

Whitecoats are newborn harp seals. Most Canadians can recall pictures of whitecoated seal pups being clubbed. The images were so inflammatory that Canada banned all hunting of whitecoats and bluebacks (otherwise known as hooded seals) in 1987.

Another ignorant "celebrity" perpetuating the falsehood that white coats are hunted. Not to mention that the majority are shot, not bludgeoned. Way to go. How about doing some research before you throw your support behind something. Hope Much Music bans you from their awards this year dickhead.

    Good for you Perez..
