Miss Saigon: The Movie!

OMG, why?!

Former United Artists CEO and Tom Cruise's producing partner Paula Wagner has set her sights on a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award winning musical Miss Saigon!

The film, which tells the tragic love story between a Vietnamese bar girl and an American soldier before the fall of Saigon in 1975, will be directed by Lee Daniels, who is generating mayjah buzz for Precious.

No screenwriter has been hired or investors in place, but they are aiming for a 2011 release date.

Considering Wagner was behind such duds as Valkyrie and Lions for Lambs, the odds are not on her side.

Musical adaptations take a lot to get off the ground, but it's probably not the right time for such a downer!

P.S. And with Jonathan Pryce too old for the lead, you may just wanna shoot yourselves now!

This may not be the best choice to bring to the big screen. It has many, many fans but never caught the American attention span the way other musicals have. I have not heard anything about a big screen version of Wicked. Now that would seem to be a natural money maker.

If they make it into a non-musical film, I think it could be great. I really don't like musicals, but I liked the story in Miss Saigon.

    OMG!!

If she puts Tommygirl in this 'Movie' it will be a shiteous disaster! I can only hope she has NOTHING to do with casting at all. They need talented actors, not egomaniacal emoters!

Ehm, Johnathan Price was NOT the lead…he was a supporting character. But he really is the only recognized actor amongst the original cast. Lea Salonga (the female lead) has made quite a name for herself in the musical theatre world and could probably still pull this off…but knowing Hollywood it'll probably be some Disney channel "pop star"…

I do not see this has being a good movie. Great musical but I think some of the songs just do not hold up so good over time. I do not care if Jonathan Pryce is in it, I do not like the character of the engineer anyway. Number 4, what would be the point of making it a non musical! Then it is not Miss Saigon. I have been looking forward to a Broadway revival of the show. It would not last to long but I want to see it again.

and you care so much why? perez family, you are so sad

My Fair Lady, Chicago, Les Miserables, RENT…. putting musical theater on the big screen wasn't invested this morning, Perez. What, you can only enjoy a good, high-budget music if you can afford the $40-80 to see it on Broadway?

This is an incredible musical, and with the right leads, music producers, and director, this can be a great addition to the big screen. Have you ever seen Miss Saigon, Perez? I saw one of the last showings in Chicago in 2000, and it was fantastic! Please don't tell me you think you're an expert at films now? Look at what happened to your failed "Perez Tour". What a joke! And, what the fuck kind of name is Perezcious Music? DUMBEST thing ever!!

well if they had a good director… ie. jerry bruckheimer or speilberg or adam shankman or that dude that did chicago… i'd see possibility…

  13. 13

Oliver Stone should direct this. The play demands movie treatment. Now casting will be the trick but please no Gerald Butler please.

  14. 14

can we just shoot you instead perez?

  15. 15

Amazing PLAY AMAZING. Not sure about a movie adaption, but 2011 we might be ready for it. Lets see what else is set to release that year it may not be the dud one might think I mean release it with another craptacular transformers you might get people to go to it….or maybe another crappy spin off like Fame. We will see.

Re: Cyber-bullies get hit – Les Miz has never yet been done as a movie musical.

FYI, Jonathan Price was not the lead in Miss Saigon. He played the pimp called "The Engineer". A secondary character. Leah Salonga played Kim, the lead girl and she is still fairly young enough to do the role (and has the chops).

I think this would be cool to see. But I agree, musicals don't really tend to do that well. Which is too bad. I saw "Rent", "Evita" and "Chicago" on the opening nights at my local popcorn palace. (Hell, I even saw the shity-ous "Phantom of the Opera" movie…God. It was so awful compared to the real thing!!)

    Can't wait to see this!

  19. 19

It's definitely not a very cheerful show.

  20. 20

noooo, i hope it wont b horrible … i mean i loved the musical , it will b disapointing if it is horrible

That was my first Broadway musical! I loved it. I wonder if Channing Tatum can sing. Hollywood seems to like him for military roles.

  22. 22

Lea Salonga is still young enough to take the lead. I hope they keep the role of "Ellen" for a good performer…I imagine that Mr. Cruise wants the part for his wife Katie…that would be beyond shameful. Jonathan Pryce is too old to play "The Engineer", but someone like Brian Stokes Mitchell would be a great choice.

RPattz should play the lead actor Chris and Leah Salonga the leading actress. She's a much better actress than any Disney girls. She's a Tony Awards best actress and still very young looking. Miss Saigon would make a very good dramatic movie and an Oscar bait if they can find an Indie director and good screenwriter. Please no Tom Cruise, Leo or Zac on this one. Give it to Robert and Lea and it will surely be a blockbuster!

  24. 24

OMG YES!!! :D They'd probably get an actual Asian to play the Engineer. If that's the case, Kevin Grey could TOTALLY play it! He's amazing in that role!

  25. 25

Re: ap076 – The made Les Miserables into a movie in 1998… but thanks for playing.

  26. 26

i love this show!!!!!!!! this is really exciting news for me and i hope it comes true.

  27. 27

Re: Cyber-bullies get hit – You're an idiot! What the hell do you know about musicals? Les Misérables has never been done as a movie musical. All the films done (there are many) are all adaptations of Victor Hugo's book, just as the musical is. I would much rather see Les Mis done before Miss Saigon as a movie musical. But either way, they are both equally amazing! I betcha you didn't even know that they are both done by Claude-Michel Schönberg

  28. 28

Re: Sly-chan – you're actually incorrect. the engineer is considered the lead. jonathan pryce won the tony for best actor. check yo facts!

  29. 29

i love the musical and and the soundtrack. Lea Salonga (she's on US/Canada tour right now) is amazing as kim and she still has the voice and look of a kim. i always thought 'Miss Saigon' is good for a a film adaptation. Robert would be a good engineer… i would say Jake G as Chris!!!!

If youre not sure how good Lea Salonga in Miss saigon, check youtube or watch her concert in Toronto, NOvember 4!
