Hulu Finally Gives In & Sells-Out, Charging Viewers

hul.jpg

The day this happens to YouTube, Internet users will cause chaos on in the streets. For now, we only see people mildly bitching and moaning.

Oh, and not paying!

Come 2010, expect to pay to play videos on the popular site Hulu. The press was alerted yesterday at an industry summit yesterday of the site's change to a subscription plan costing $$$ to view videos. (Though some content may continue to be offered for free, but they won't be anything worthactually watching.)

News Corp Deputy Chairman Chase Carey said:

“I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value."

Again, come talk to us if YouTube pulls this shiz. Then, we'll start a big ass fuss!

It's "worth_actually" not "worthactually". First spelling and now grammer?!

  2. 2

that's kinda bullshit since most of the content is from free broadcast airwaves… how can you charge to repeat something that is free to begin with…

i wouldn't have a problem with it as long as the broadcast content remains free

  3. 3

Back to megaupload and odd Asian sites with subtitles.

  4. 4

    BLASPHEMY!

  5. 5

i'm pissed off! oh wait, there's a million other places on the internet that have basically the same content as hulu, only they're not charging for it!!!

    suck it hulu!!!

  6. 6

Why don't they just charge big bucks for advertising? Like you do, Perezipoop.

  7. 7

Won't be using Hulu anymore I guess.

  8. 8

-_- I am very annoyed. I go to Hulu to catch up on all my favorite shows, I'm actually watching an episode of Bones while reading the site, Perez. I had Netflix for awhile, but they don't have any of the shows or anything remotely interesting on instant viewing. I guess I can switch my subscription to Hulu… IF they back date the shows and have all the previous seasons upload on there too. You should update on this if they change the policy to keep all the seasons episodes uploaded, instead of deleting them and only showing, generally, the past/current 5 or so episodes.

  9. 9

I'm with others on this. I'm not about to pay for something I rarely watch. They'll just end up losing all viewership because of this.

  10. 10

CoCo balls, please tell your asshole of a sister to go back to school and get a journalism degree.

    xoxo.

  11. 11

    wow. thats some bullshit!!

  12. 12

That is ridiculous! Hulu is the only website I go to watch episodes that I missed on t.v. I'm NOT going to pay to use Hulu. If any of you guys know any good websites like Hulu that aren't being douchebags and charging to view videos, could you please leave a comment with the website link. Thanks! :D

I'm not surprised nor angry. "Free" has traditionally been the business model for internet content, but it has never been sustainable; and as more people are utilizing the internet, operating costs have risen (especially for high-traffic, high-bandwith sites such as hulu), but advertising spending hasn't risen enough to cover the difference, unlike television (which is having an identical problem with lack of advertising dollars these days, so it too is having to find ways to adapt). Projects such as hulu can't continue without funds with which to operate, simple as that.

A lot of people demand that web content be free, but the internet is not a public service; it is a business enterprise like any other. I don't see why it should suddenly operate under some form of altruism for the selfishness of users, especially if its unfeasible. Sites that can cover operating costs with adverts, great. But sites that can't shouldn't be punished for it.

  14. 14

Hulu can go suck some balls.

go watch season 1&2 of DORM LIFE
    while you still can

  15. 15

I'm actually bummed out!! Hulu is the site I go to if I really want good quality videos! I actually loved going on there!! This sucks…I guess YouTube will have to suffice when 2010 comes around…

  16. 16

    i think it sucks!!

  17. 17

that pisses me off. I use it all the time. but I wont when they start charging.

  18. 18

Well that sucks, looks like i'll be missing a lot of shows, crap crap

  19. 19

This sucks! I love Hulu but will not pay for it.

  20. 20

Sad news. I love Hulu, but I won't pay to use it. I'm sure I can find other sites

    21

there are like a thousand other places to get hulu content without all the commericals and better resolution. I usually just go to the network and i also have on-demand cable which offers those shows and a lot more, quicker. I do hulu because sometimes i get to watch shows i've heard of or like old cartoons, but i won't pay for that crap.

  22. 22

Yes, HULU will crash. I accept the burps, bumps and jittering commercials and video on a free channel. I won't pay for a channel who cannot give a smooth feed on a T1 line. It's on their end, not mine.

  23. 23

Re: Starflower11 – get the blockbuster version of netflix. it is so much better, and you can turn in your dvds to a block buster store and just trade it for a movie

  24. 24

This is bullshit. I only use Hulu to watch Desperate Housewives because I work on Sunday nights! And the feed on ABC.com is too crappy to sit through. Ugh! This sucks. Anyone know a decent place to watch our fave tv programs?

  25. 25

NOT TRUE. I have news that hulu will continue to be a free service with no decrease in breadth or quality of service or offerings. The fee service will offer more episodes, seasons and potentially movies and will be very cheap.

  26. 26

Perez, I don't think you have room to talk about selling out. We may not have to pay for this site, but it's plastered with stupid ads.

  27. 27

Try veoh or at least you can still get stuff from pirate bay for now until that's no more - the buyer that was supposed to take over pirate bay is in bankruptcy and the whole thing is a mess but at least it's still open and free.

  28. 28

I use hulu because i can't afford cable..why do they think i'd pay them a fee? I'll just have to go back to all the shitty ways of finding my shows the free way..getting my computer viruses at the same time. thanks hulu!

  29. 29

That is BS! They already play tons of commercials every 5 minutes. I will not pay and will not watch!

  30. 30

ALL of Hulu's movies suck…who in the world would pay to watch them?! Big mistake, hulu.

  31. 31

Thats so stupid! You don't have to pay to watch the videos on t.v. in the first place! Or the shows website or youtube or On Demand or if you recorded it on TiVo!

  32. 32

    BULLSHIT!

  33. 33

I think it's crap. It's always about money. Nickel and dime people.

  34. 34

    FUCK HULU THEN.

  35. 35

Hulu is dead. If people have to pay to view episodes, they'll just download them from iTunes.

  36. 36

If true, I predict they will fail, utterly.

  37. 37

That's pretty lame, especially with the whole "value more" crap. Yeah, like everyone else is saying, there are other places to get the shows/etc. Like, oh I don't know, even the network that airs them!? Yup, they're not gonna make any money.

  38. 38

you can always go to the network website to watch the shows you missed. At least they don't charge you. It will hurt them, hopefully.

  39. 39

time to move to FANCAST then when they charge, there's always someone who will come along and not charge.

  40. 40

And this is why we have surf the channel and many other outlets to watch our fave shows. HULUFAIL big time. They are going to crap when they see the resurrgence of online video sites and I don't think youtube would do it. I think youtube knows they would have too much public backlash after what? 3 years of offering content for free. Hulu has only had a year or something. Wow I guess the networks are really freaking big time about the world of online video. Oh well thats what you get for not listening to techs crazies back in the early 90s when this was PREDICTED to happen.

  41. 41

In other news: Hulu CEO commits suicide after ear-popping plummet in web-hits.

  42. 42

HA!!!!!!!! Take that American Bastards. I'll feel pity once the American Coprporation stops discriminating against Canada. The moment I can watch videos on Hulu the happier I will be

  43. 43

If they upgrade their content to decent movies and so forth then sure… butiwith the stuff they show now, no way.

  44. Laura says – reply to this

    44

    It doesn't matter what they're charging, I ain't paying. Re-dick

  45. 45

    FORGET HULU!!!!!

    *****WWW.CLICKER.COM***********

    FORGET HULU!!!!!!!!!!

    *****WWW.CLICKER.COM***********

  46. 46

Hulu sucks dick, but I'm not really surprised that they are moving in that direction. Charging for the service is what they intended in the first place. They just wanted to hook people in by allowing free access at first. Just like drug dealers; give them the first taste free, get them hooked, then suck them dry. It really was an obvious ploy to anyone who was paying attention.

  47. 47

Ninjavideo is all you need. To hell with HULU!

  48. 48

FUCK hulu, i wont go on there any more. idiots.

  49. 49

    Re: Rtarara – lolololol. yess.

  50. 50

Doesn't make any difference to me. I hope they start charging. I can't watch their videos anyways

  51. 51

omg thats fucking bullshit!!! come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love to watch hulu on monday because desperate housewives is on at the same time as family guy

WTF HULU i thought u were better than THAT

  52. 52

I think it sucks ass. Do we still have to watch their fucking commercials like we do on the incredibly expensive cable tv?

  53. 53

i think it sux! all the things i watch on hulu r already available on their channel websites but hulu has a much better picture and it doesnt take forever to buffer! i'm gonna use it up b4 i gotta pay for the crap!

  54. 54

    Dear Hulu,
If people wanted to pay to watch your videos they'd just get cable. Way to loose all those hits you get each day. Idiots!

  55. 55

Chase Carey is a total ass…I used to work for him and THANK THE LORD I no longer do!

  56. 56

Crap. I go to HULU to catch up on my shows. I certainly WON"T pay for the movies they have on there. So old and lame. Big dumb decision. Kiss that site bye-bye if this happens.

  57. 57

Re: Amanda_Lee – Chase Carey is also the CEO for Directv…so they prob assume it will detour people from watching online and just pay for tv.

  58. dtg says – reply to this

    58

Hulu will be dead to me come 2010.

  59. MP says – reply to this

    59

Screw that. There's other places to watch free TV.

  60. 60

ridiculous!!! I work midnights and hulu is the only thing that gets me through the night.

  61. 61

I use hulu at the moment… definitely will not use it when they start charging. Not worth it!! Aren't they making money off of all those commercials? Back to watching the television instead of the laptop. Oh well?

  62. 62

I think they just committed suicide.

  63. 63

SANTA MONICA, Calif (Reuters) – Video-viewing site Hulu is experimenting with different business models and initiatives, from bumping up advertising to designing subscription-based content, to boost revenue, said NBC Universal's TV chief, Marc Graboff.

Hulu is helping increase viewing overall by drawing viewers to shows they may not have initially watched, but the challenge was in creating a model for Hulu that provides more revenue for its owners, said Graboff, chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios.

  64. 64

guess it's time i finally broke down and got a dvr

  65. 65

    boohooloo

    :(

  66. 66

    Re: LV-Entergetic

    You spelled grammar wrong, idiot.

  67. 67

First, it's a lie that Hulu is "free." We have to watch ads during these shows, and the ad content is paying the networks. So for them to act like they get nothing out of this is bullshit. Second, no one with any sense will pay to access shows on Hulu, they will just go to the plentiful streaming video sites and watch the shizz for free.

  68. 68

wtflip. i appreciate…i appreciate that it's been free!

  69. 69

hulu? never heard of it. now that they'll be charging, I won't ever bother finding out. Long live YouTube. They actually appreciate their viewers and don't want to chase them off with a fee. No matter how low that fee may be, if it's not free I don't want it.

  70. 70

    It's grammar not "grammer"

  71. 71

Hulu can suck it…I will just start using my TiVo again and watching my shows for free!

  72. ohboy says – reply to this

    72

Yeah, I recognized the value of it from the beginning…which is why I let them farm my viewing and demographic info. Not to mention the money they make off ads. I will not be watching Hulu when it converts. FU!!!!

  73. 73

    wooohooooooooooooooooo
    herez
    a thought…hehehehe
    EFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
    DEMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
    zhitfukzhitfuk
    go zum where elze///

  74. 74

They couldn't possibly thinking of charging AND running ads? Oh, they want it to fail because its cutting into Network & Cable viewing habits. Perhaps if they treated Hulu more like a network than an APPLIANCE it would be more attractive, but nobody believes in the power of personality anymore. Frankly, lots of people have no idea what's worth watching so 'Taste-Making' (as vulgar as that may sound to Web-Heads) is what could save an entity like HULU. Not that anyone has the balls to do this. Huh?

  75. 75

well that really blows but at least fancast is still free plus every channel still put their shows on their websites

  76. 76

Re: Rtarara – right on! C'mon people there a million other ways to watch stuff online for free, OVG will save your life! Or download as torrents, that my favourite, since I live in Canada I cant even access Hulu.

  77. 77

FUCK YOU HULU! How much does it cost to get Seth Macfarlane or a Baldwin out of bed in the morning? Maybe if you had saved some money on fancy advertising, you could have actually kept the promises of free content in your now totally useless, waste-of-time commercials. That's what I would have 'appreciated' Mr. Carey.

  78. 78

megavideo is better anyway. and everyone can watch it

  79. 79

I don't have cable and for Music and TV I'm using LoggTV.com. I'm hooked with LoggTV movies and everything is found here.

  80. 80

this blows! how do i contact hulu to tell them they suck?

  81. 81

    this is total bullshit.

  82. R3LS says – reply to this

    82

    FUCK THIS!

  83. 83

erm. no. The minute a free site turns pay I just go somewhere else. I don't fucking pay them.

  84. 84

BS!!!! I will never go there again!!

  85. 85

Once hulu makes the switch over there will still be free content to watch. It will most likely be the most current episodes that you will be able to view for free. If you want to watch a complete season, then you will have to pay. Paying is no different than subscribing to netflix. PLUS, there will be a hulu iPhone app out that will allow you to watch content directly on your phone. Although youtube is free the quality is low most of the time. Hulu is high quality and shared directly from the companies that produce the shows.

  86. 86

    who cares?
just go on surfthechannel.org they dont even have commercials. the megavideo links are the best

  87. 87

You cheap fucks have no idea how much bandwith costs.
You think everything is free, it all comes form the bandwith fairy.

There are reports that YouTube loses a million dollars A DAY! The only reason they can afford to keep going is because Google has so much money.

  88. 88

Hulu is shit anyway. Don't even use it.

  89. 89

    That's bullshit!!

  90. 90

wow this really blows…being in the military and overseas this was the only website that actually let me watch the shows. BOOOO!

  91. 91

    what??? no way!!

  92. BRATZ says – reply to this

    92

    This will crash and burn
