The Lights Go Out On Shrek On Broadway

Good! Maybe Sutton Foster can go back to doing legitimate theater! (Quit selling out on us, Sutton! We expect that of movie actors, but not thespians like yourself!)

Having run just about a year was all it took to run Shrek The Musical back from whence it came. The $24 million show never really sat too well with critics and in these hard economic times, audience numbers have dwindled.

So, the show will close on January 3rd, hoping to suck dry the funds of visiting tourists in the holiday season.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks, the film studio behind the movie franchise, admits:

"We were hopeful that the show would have a longer run on Broadway. But we believe it will continue to create financial value for the company and deliver profits beyond our initial investment."

Oh, did we forget to mention? Now it's going on national tour. So if you thought you were safe from it, think again. It's coming to a major city near you!

    Dear kind sir,
You, yourself, have sold out and you're criticizing?
My goodness, what a platter of hypocrisy on the table today.

  4. 4

Have you seen it Perez to criticize? I love Sutton Foster and have seen everything that she has been in. I left in such a good mood from that show! It was great!! No, there is no stand out song that will become a Broadway classic, but there are many stand out production numbers! The guy who plays Lord Farkward DANCES on his knees the entire time!! It has some great stuff, and I think it was a great time. I have and will continue to recommend it!

I beg to differ. I personally enjoyed the musical very much, it was funny, the songs were great and most importantly how they were able to pull of the transition from movie to a broadway play. But then again, opinions are like assholes and everyone has one. I'm sorry to see it go.

  7. 7

Yea, I have Tv in the woods and when I got Shrek movie, I watched it a million times. I would of loved to see it on broadway.

  8. 8

Perez, are you serious? You wouldn't no good theater if it hit you in the face. While I agree that Shrek was kitschy, it had some great talent associated with it, and that alone made it a good show.

  9. 9

perez you are a greasy sellout. now, you are celebrating that many people will lose their jobs when the show ends.

you're forever fat head will never know or have class and talent

My daughter and I saw this show and really enjoyed it! Not as great as some of the other musicals, but highly entertaining and worth the money. Not sure why everyone is so quick to slam it.

    Hey A-HOL!
I can't believe you're writing this and in this terms, 1st, Shrek is a pretty nice musical, I've seen almost all of them and he music is very good, unlike most of Disney's, 2nd, as you say, we are in times of crisis, so THINK ABOUT ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE GONNA LOSE THEIR JOBS, so next time u write about this stuff, think about the people first…
You really disappointed me this time!!!

  12. 12

Did you, yourself see the play? It was very good.

Re: Motherof3 – Not everyone sweetie….just stupid, himself. He, who thinks he's all knowing about theater….

    The ones that hate….didn't see.

  14. 14

The performance(s) on The View were sooooo boring.

  15. 15

Just what do you consider "legitimate" theatre? Take a look at her Broadway experience — it's ALL musicals, which I guess you consider "illegitimate" theatre.

You know nothing about theatre and shouldn't pretend otherwise; you make an even bigger fool of yourself.

  16. 16

Reaaly? But it was nominated for like 6 tonys??

New York City's gain is now the rest of America's loss. Alright putting the cynic in me on hold maybe it is enjoyable to children, but what family can afford those prices?

  18. 18

perez im guessing you didn't see shrek on bway. it was fantastic. really funny with great music and a great cast.

and if anyone is a sellout, it's you.

  19. 19

I saw this show two weeks ago with my husband and children ranging from 22-14, and everyone loved it. The costumes were amazing, and the charaters hilarious… so go see it!!

Whatever- it was way better than half the shit put on Broadway this past season. I'm not saying it didn't have it's flaws, (like many new shows nowadays) but Jeanine Tesori wrote great music, the set was really awesome (and big) and josh princes' choreo was great. In terms of a "big show" it had it all. Let's see you all try and do the same………exactly…
