Sad, sad news in the musical theatre world.

It was announced on Sunday morning that famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Webber's spokeswoman has released a statement regarding Webber's condition, which is said to be "in its early stages."

She continued: "Andrew is now undergoing treatment and expects to be fully back at work before the end of the year."

Webber, known for composing such legendary musicals as Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar is in the process of creating a sequel to Phantom called Love Never Dies.

Rehearsals for Love Never Dies are expected to begin in 2010, with the show opening in London in March 2010 and on Broadway in November.

      so sad.

Prostate cancer is VERY treatable. If it is in the early stages… although it is still cancer and he has a fight.
      .
1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

    7. 7

So, sad, I hope he gets better.

    8. 8

Most men will get this. Catch it early and you will be fine.

Awh, I loved Phantom of The Opera. Get better soon!

    11. 11

If it's in the early stages, it's almost always curable. My dad had it caught early, and was cancer free when he died of other causes 10 years later

    12. 12

Get well, Andrew. The world needs your magic.

    13. 13

Prostate cancer is incredibly common, risk increasing with age - if you were to look in the prostates of all the 90 year old men out there, 90% percent of them would have some stage of prostate cancer. But, as far as cancers go, is INCREDIBLY treatable. It's also very slow growing, taking between 14-17 years to progress to metastasis.

There's a bit of a threat to his sex life, but even that, in early stage cancers, isn't that bad.

…and I now regret thinking about ALW and sex in the same context. ew.

Oh man, I hope he's okay.
He will be in my prayers tonight.

    15. 15

This breaks my heart. Such a sad day. I wish him a speedy recovery!

    16. 16

EARLY STAGES, dummy! Why is it "sad, sad news"? Jeez, the way you make it sound, it's like he's got one foot in the grave! Don't be so melodramatic!

    17. 17

Aww that's terrible. But on the plus side I bet Mr. Sheffield is having a good day?
      Still, it's terrible

    18. 18

      NOOOOOOOOOooOOOOOOOooooOOOOOooooOOOO!

    19. 19

no! i cant believe it! i really hope he gets better, it would be such a loss to lose him, hes a national treasure!

Fight, fight, fight-the art world needs you.

That's sad. It's very common in men. There are so many cancers out there. What I hate is all these people begging us to support breast cancer research all the time–like it's the only kind of cancer there is. I get pestered by them at the grocery store, at the music store and they even come knocking on my door. I'm fucking tired of them and their pink ribbons all over the goddamn place. And newsflash–women are more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than breast cancer.

    22. 22

Get well! Be strong. Love your music and shows. Have everything you ever done. Godspeed!

    23. 23

you know you are better off being poor and anonymous … the more successful and rich you are … then doctors are clamering to be your physician and presto you have more thorough examinations and they find something … ignorance is bliss

      Daylight
See the dew on the sunflower
And a rose that is fading
      Roses whither away
      Like the sunflower
I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
      I am waiting for the day . . .

      Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
      She is smiling alone
      In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

      Memory
      All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
      I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
      Let the memory live again

      Every streetlamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
      Someone mutters
      And the streetlamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

      Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
      And I musn't give in
      When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies, another night is over
      Another day is dawning

      Touch me
It's so easy to leave me
      All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
      If you touch me
      You'll understand what happiness is

      Look
      A new day has begun

i have high hopes he will get better. prostate cancer especially caught in the beginning stages is very treatable as I think others said as well. good luck to him and his family!

What a legend. Like other cancer patients, I wish him the best of luck.
      He's a true genius.

    29. 29

Ohh, i hope he gets better.

    30. 30

Oh no! I hope he gets better, hopefully because they found it early he will make a full recovery!

    31. 31

      Maxwell Sheffield will be thrilled.
Kidding. Thats sad news though, but it's early. i'm sure he'll be fine.

    32. 32

Thats terrible. Hope he beats it.

I never knew what he looked like, I just remembered him because they always used to talk about him on The Nanny.

    33. 33

It's a very common cancer among older men. Caught early should be able to take care of it.

    34. 34

      surprised its not AIDS

    35. 35

      Re: frusciante

      AMEN Brother.

Nothing against breast cancer - but enough with the pink fuckin ribbons. There are other cancers out there the need money to find a cure too.

    36. 36

This is an example of why all the monies should be spent on cancer research and not aids research. Billions are wasted trying to find a cure for a disease that is 100% preventable - that is wasted money that could be spent finding a cure for prostate, breast and other non preventable cancers. But, does it all really matter anyway….we are all going to pass away one day from our last disease regardless of what it is. The only question that matters is what is going to happen to you after you draw your last breath. If you don't know then you better find out! That is the only thing that matters in this life. Truth is absolute, no matter how much you run away from it or ignore it. You're denial of the Truth does not change the Truth. If you know the Truth, truely know it, then you would be living a different life…once you realize how wretched you are.

    37. 37

My goodness Perez! Cancer is not a death sentence! Many people recover-including me!
      Positivity is important!

    38. 38

      Don't die!

    39. 39

Oh my god! I hope he pulls through this!!
