Tyler Perry vs Spike Lee!!!
Tyler Perry is MAD! And he has no qualms talking about why!
Recently, director Spike Lee took an unnecessary and hurtful (to him) jab at Tyler Perry, calling his characters, such as Madea, examples of “coonery” and “buffoonery.”
Yeah, tell that to the movie audiences who always managed to shoot his flicks up to #1!
Tyler isn't taking Spike's crap sitting down, so he recently went on 60 Minutes to respond.
Watch as Tyler calmly, but sternly dismisses Spike's opinion (above).
Who do U agree with?

Re: Ky Ky – wow you're an ignoramus….are you slow?
They both have completely different styles of movie-making. I can appreciate them both. I like that there are characters like Madea who are funny and light-hearted. I like that there are films like Malcolm X and Do The Right Thing. Why can't we just be happy that each has found some measure of success in thier own individual ways. Thanks to both for entertaining us and trying to teach us as well. Well done Tyler Perry! Well done Spike Lee!
Re: blackheartshine – Word. And lol@ the people calling Spike Lee anti-white.
Re: Ky Ky – LOL this is true, but tone it down a bit lol. I personally don’t enjoy his movies because they are very stereotypical, and I believe this stereotype in particular shouldn’t be called a stereotype because it is in fact true! People shouldn’t complain about them until they break the mold.
Re: sonicbird – Totally agree with you.
Spike is jealous of Tyler Perry commercial success and in a few short years in Hollywood has surpassed him as the most powerful black filmmaker in Hollywood and has a bigger buget and his own production deal and studio. Spike doesn't even make one tenth of what Tyler Perry is making is just movie sales alone. A few months ago Spike attacked living legend Clint Eastwood who on his worst day could out sell any Spike Lee movie.
Re: Zombie Hitler – You are on the money!
I can't stand Spike Lee!! Why does everthing in the movie business have to be a "black thing" or a "racist thing". Can't he just let other filmakers to express their art on screen. I am a white man, and think Tyler Perry is a genious. "I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF" was one of my favourite movies of the year (insert Taraji P Henson Oscar plug here). Spike is just bitter because its not the 90's anymore and no one gives a shit about his films. GO TEAM TP!!!
The truth is they are totally examples of “coonery” and “buffoonery.”
Spike Lee is BITTER & pretentious! HELLO, Spike, did you forget Crooklyn & the other "ghetto" stereotypes you portrayed in your older movies? YOU CAN'T ESCAPE ghetto black people–THEY EXIST. Now, one might say, Perry celebrates them w/ honesty (everyone has a ghetto cousin or aunt, right?), & one might say, like Lee, that (Perry) is making it okay for black people to act that way. Honestly, I support Perry because, sure he may be pushing the race envelope w/ his over-the-top "ghetto" comedies, but his dramas appeal to all groups of blacks, & are really positive, spiritual, & fun. They show how black families connect, love each other, deal w/ issues, & deal w/ g-d. His comedies, as of what I've seen in previews, do appeal to a low-brow audience, but plenty of white directors make movies that make women look like objects & they make other "social" mistakes. Perry should make more dramas. Spike should make more movies period, lol. Spike is bitter because he works hard to make serious, angsty movies w/ social messages, & he gets no credit, or doesn't anymore, & here is Perry who gets all the success w/ "fluff". Lesson learned: Perry—use more substance, but keep having fun
Lee—shut up & make more movies that have a little more happiness & hope & not cynicism & bitterness about being black. CELEBRATE being black, like Perry, don't whine about it.
Re: Ky Ky – Um. If you pay attention, Tyler's point was that these TYPES of people do exist, therefore why not speak of it. His point is not that ALL Blaque people act like that, but in reality, there are people in the world that act like that. But race doesn't really have anything to do with it, I think, because there are some VERY abrasive caucasians in this world, and Lord knows they haven't been depicted the greatest in every movie on this planet.
Stereo types? Look at all of Spike Lee's movies! Jungle Fever, Do the Right Thing…. Ha!
I agree with Tyler on this one. I love most of Spike's movies, but he needs to get over himself. Sometimes people just want to be entertained, and Tyler's movies do just that. I also think it's a little hypocritical for Spike to criticize Tyler Perry for some of the exact same things that he's done. I'm sorry, but Girl 6, She Hate Me, and even Miracle at St. Anna contained some of the worst stereotypes I've ever seen. But it was ok for him to do it because he was just trying to make a point?? And it was art??
Sorry, I haven't seen any of Tyler's work but I know who he is. But as a white person I think I can find several examples of stereotypical white portrayals on TV which are humorous but that doesn't make it bad. It is entertainment and some are very successful like Married with Children. But then you have break-outs like All In the Family which made you laugh but made you think too. There is nothing wrong with playing a stereotype as long as you know what you are watching, "Married with Children or All in the Family". The fact that over 90% of Tyler's audience is black means that it is probably Married with Children. If it were All in the Family, we would all be watching, even if you knew it was going to make you mad as hell.
I love Tyler Perry! Don't judge him or Madea movies until you watch all his fims in entirity. All his movies are christain based with happy endings. IT's about forgivenss, resilience, accepting yourself. One of my favorite is "why did I get married?" If there were more Madeas in this world, there wouldn't be so many troubled teenagers running around.
Hats off to Tyler Perry!! He is at the top for a reason. His movies are HILARIOUS. Spike Lee has NOTHING going on, no one really gives a damn what he has to say so he has to stir up crap as usual to get heard or seen. I suggest he does something positive like Tyler Perry has and maybe then he will have an audience; otherwise keep his mouth shut, no one cares!
Spike Lee's just bitter. Spike Lee's films consistently glorify black people and demonize white people, where as Tyler Perry's films reach out and touch all nationalities: black, white, latino and asian….And he's raking in a fuck ton of cash to boot.
I'd like to nominate Spike Lee for the Player Hater Of The Year Award.
I thought Spike Lee was a proud black man, not an jealous green man.
I absolutely agree with Spike Lee on this.
Tyler Perry's movies are extremely stereotypical and probably the lowest form of wit and humor I have ever seen.
It really makes African Americans appear like ignorant, loud-mouthed, attitude prone morons, and I know that they are not like that, which is why it's insulting to portray them in that way.
"Buffoonery"and "coonery"? I couldn't have said it better myself.
Spike Lee is a hater and a pompous ass. He had the nerve to criticize Clint Eastwood, now its Tyler Perry. Both have more talent in their little fingers than Lee has in his entire acting/directorial career. "She's Got to Have It" was an embarrassment and was demeaning to black women. A women sleeping with three men at one time. I'd rather see Tyler's characters anyday, than see the aforementioned portrayal of Spike's concept of blacks. What has Sike done lately. Nothing. How much $$$$ does Sike have in the bank? Not as much as Tyler. Does Spike have his own studio lt? Not! Tyler does. Grow up Spike and get your act together. Stop hating and spend more positive time trying to be more creative.
