Just because there are no women does not mean there is discrimination going on. If you don't have evidence in the form of claims, e-mails, etc, then you have nothing. Going up against 3 big networks and claiming they discriminate is a very big deal and you should be careful with that. I work in the technology industry, and we have very few women. It's not because we discriminate, it's because when we have a job opening, women never apply for the positions. Perhaps the same is true for late-night comedy.

What makes you so sure it's discrimination? Maybe women just don't really apply for those jobs, and the few that do are beat out by men who just happen to be MORE QUALIFIED for the job.
Let's be honest, how many GOOD female comedians/comedy writers are there compared to men in that industry?
That explains why I watch only Craig Ferguson and Chelsea Handler. I'll catch Letterman sometimes, but I'm rarely impressed with the humor side, unlike the former two.
There aren't that many female comedy writers. There definitely are some, but it's a field dominated by men. Like the culinary world. There's just not that many to choose from. But things are getting better!

The reasons that so fewer women are in these types of positions are because there are always a large number of women who begin these jobs but later decide to become housewives/mothers.
As the VF article author highlighted, when that temp at the investment banker asked about further female bankers the Manager didn't want to go there because he had probably hired them in the past, spent large amounts of money to train them and get them licensed, only to have them disappear within 6 months as they left to become stay-at-home wives/mothers. I've seen the same thing at my career where nearly ALL of our female bankers eventually left to do the same.
The hiring staff at these comedy shows probably experienced something similar, and would prefer men because they would feel that men will stay for the long run.

how about because women really aren't very funny? not trying to sound sexist, but i have not met a lot of funny women in my life. there are a few comediens that are female, but for the most part, there aren't many funny broads out there
girls should learn to be funny then!
are you saying they should be forced to take on less funny writers? they pick the funniest people clearly they wouldn't take on someone less funny cos they are a guy!
All 3 shows should reconsider .. they can certainly use some fresh funny material.
By the way, it makes me feel a little bit better that 2 of Letterman's Executive Producers are female, and so is the guitarist.
Ummmm….WHAT!? Letterman is well known for hiring women. Most of the people on his set are women, though, I don't know about his writers. And Liz Feldman writes for Leno. Last time I checked, she's a woman.

Women, generally speaking, aren't funny and don't appear to derive any pleasure from acting the fool. Those few women who are successful as comediennes do so by behaving like men (i.e. shock comedy.) I wish this were not the case. Perhaps they are hilarious when they're hanging out together and no men are around. If that's the case, they should grow a set and share their talents with the world. In the meantime we're stuck with male comedy writers. If ya don't like Leno, Letterman, et. al. then grow a sense of humour.
it would be discrimination if women were good at comedy writing…but it's not discrimination since girls are not funny………….they suck at even executing, not just writing, material. example: when i watch snl i cringe through all the scenes with women in it cause it is so painfully unfunny

You have no proof that there's discrimination. A lot of us women aren't that funny and those of us who are, are just when it comes to throwing in funny things into conversations and not writing comedy scripts.

Come on, they're males writers because opinions of whats funny is based on a male's perspective as the norm. What women think is funny is regarded as chick humor. Women aren't funny. Who is the "funniest" woman? Tina Fey? Also she does is talk about how funny she is, but never writes anything funny. Yuck.
It's a shame too…I'm sure we all know women who can write better jokes. I'm sick of hearing the same jokes come from people getting paid enough to take care of 8 people. If I made that kind of money, I'm certain the excitement of my paycheck alone would make me do a better job.
Seriously though, the same 'marijuana used to help hemorrhoids' joke two nights in a row? Oh yeah, I know there are women who can do better than that.
