Sublime Reunites Despite Legal Action From Late Frontman's Estate

Popular '90s punk band Sublime performed at California's Smokeout Festival over the weekend and late lead singer Bradley Nowell's estate was not happy about it.

It was the band's first show since Nowell died back in 1996 from a drug overdose and his family is upset that they aren't taking on a new name to perform under.

The band's remaining members include Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson along with Nowell's replacement, Rome Ramirez.

Bradley's family released the following statement:

"It was Brad's expressed intention that no one use the name Sublime in any group that did not include him, and Brad even registered the trademark Sublime under his own name. As Brad's heirs, and with the support of his entire family, we only want to respect his wishes and therefore have not consented to Bud and Eric calling their new project Sublime… and now with great reluctance feel compelled to take the appropriate legal action to protect Brad's legacy. Our hope is that Brad's ex-bandmates will respect his wishes and find a new name to perform under."

But Gaugh and Wilson don't agree and performed as Sublime anyway!

Gaugh explains:

"While we all mourn the passing of our brother and bandmate Bradley Nowell some thirteen years ago, Sublime still has a strong message of hope and love to share..It’s unfortunate that The Estate would take a position against us…Eric, Brad and I started this band when we were kids. We were the ones that spent years paying dues playing hole-in-the-wall clubs. We were the ones lugging around our gear in a broken down van. We were the ones that spent years writing, recording and rehearsing. WE. Not anyone else. Sublime is a band - our band."

We tend to agree with Gaugh, but does anyone even still listen to Sublime?

    Yes!!!!!
I do not agree with Nowell's Estate. It was THIER band not just his!

  2. 2

Yes, plenty of people still listen to Sublime. And while I agree with Gaugh, they still need to respect the wishes of their dead friend/band mate. It wouldn't hurt them to use another name.

  3. 3

Are you kidding me perez? So many fucking boring idiots love sublime.

  4. 4

Sublime was awesome! Still love it.

  5. 5

is that a serious question? maybe if you didnt put out all the crap you do everyday you'd know what GREAT music sounds like.

  6. 6

Tons of people still listen to Sublime, and no heatherrr, not boring idiots!! Sublime was an amazing band and made much better music than most of these ignorant assholes do today!

  7. 7

hells yeah!!! They are the best band of all time. Right up there with the Beatles if you ask me. It's good to have you all back Sublime, we are ready for you! This news made my day :)

  8. 8

'Bradley's family' is just pissed that they won't be getting a cut of Sublime's future endeavors. Wow, hearing anybody talk about Sublime brings back so many memories. Rest In Peace Brad.

  9. 9

i love Sublime and welcome them back, RIP Bradley, but those guys were just as much of a part of Sublime as Brad.

  10. 10

Sublime fucking ROCKS!! What I don't listen to is the crap you're always promoting.

  11. 11

They just want a cut of the profits! Whatevs!

  12. 12

LOVE IS WHAT I GOT, I SAID REMEMBER THAT!
SUBLIME WILL ALWAYS HAVE A PLACE IN MY HEART.

    13

Yes, people still listen to Sublime. I mean, its no overprocessed dance crap or random indie "LOOK AT ME, A BAND YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF" band, but its timeless and awesome.

  14. 14

are you kidding??!! youre just being ignorant if you question sublime's popularity. of course people still listen to sublime! they're the best and they always will be!

  15. 15

are you brain damaged? do people still listen to sublime? sometimes i wonder about you perez.

  16. 16

Ofcourse peopple still listen to Sublime, however, Bradley's vocals were a major part of the band and why a lot of people loved them so much… I don't think they should continue because it just wont be the same. I mean, look at Catch22. They went through members like nothing and now they dont even sound good anymore.

  17. 17

Sublime is one of the greatest bands of all time. I still listen from time to time. And they made such a mark on me as a teenager, that as an adult.. I namd my son Bradley. He's now 4 years old. Happy to here they may be putting out some new music.

  18. 18

it wasn't called the bradley nowell band back then and they're definiately not going to call it the bradley nowell estate band now. i agree with his bandmates.

  19. 19

FUCK YOU PEREZ THIS IS THE FIRST TIM IVE FELT THAT WAY BAOUT YOU ROCK ON SUBLIME!!

  20. 20

    Yep !

It seems selfish for the family to try and block the band.

  21. 21

Perez, I agree with you on a lot of things but that was the stupidest question ever! Of course people still listen to Sublime. They were a great band with great music. When I am out at the bars Sublime comes on the jukebox all of the time. People still love them and the band was cut short with Brads passing. I feel the band should be able to go on with the name even though of course, it won't be the same.

  22. 22

I'm always leery of when band members are changed when a dead has happened.

At least the reunion isn't going to be made into a reality TV show to find a new band member. I think that's just in bad bad taste.

  23. 23

I listen to Sublime….and to get your facts right, I wouldn't categorize them as punk…
reggae would be more appropriate. do your research.

  24. 24

Of course ppl still listen to Sublime. The music is timeless. And honestly if Brad didn't want the name to be used without him, then he shouldn't have been a junkie. Such a waste of talent.

  25. 25

YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!
Still one of my favorite bands! They still get regular radio play! And I agree with Bud, Sublime is a band, not Bradley Nowell's back-up band. It's been 13 YEARS!

  26. 26

theres no i in band…. make music, spread the love, "Estates" shut the fuck up. RIP Brad

  27. 27

I still listen to sublime. This seems like an impossible situation. I can understand the estate's stance, but at the same time, the only reason the remaining members of Sublime are trying to move on with the same name without Bradley is because Brad overdosed and died. It's not like they kicked him out of the band.

  28. 28

LOVE them..still relevant and pleasure to listen to.

  29. 29

They should use the Sublime name. It's sad that he is dead but he wasnt the only member of that band.

  30. 30

PS -> Love sublime and cant wait to see what new stuff they send us…

  31. 31

YES people still listen to Sublime, dork.

  32. 32

I'm a huge Sublime fan and still listen to them all the time. That being said- these guys already had a band after Brad died. They were called Long Beach Dub Allstars. I saw them in concert and they are nothing without brad. He wrote the songs! I don't think they should use the name sublime because they're going to be shitty!!!

  33. 33

    uhh, yeah. plenty still do.

  34. 34

Hopefully they can live up to the name….

  35. 35

People still listen to Sublime and you are not as knowledgeable as you think if you don't know that. All Sublime fans will be Sublime fans until they're dead in the ground. All of us fans should go outside of Perez's home and blare "Santeria" for a while, just to prove the point.

  36. 36

Perez You live under a Rock! If you truly dont think people listen to them don't dare post anything about them on your Blog. Sublime should stay untouched. and if they make new music it will only blur the legacy the left and will now allow stupid teeny boppers to act like they loved sublime. Sublime should stay strung out on dope and should not be touched. Those boys should take sublime and keep it as a Yearbook. Start over and use one of there songs as there new band name just like a little band called Bad Fish does. 40 oz to Freedom. And Lou Dog would not like this one bit!

  37. 37

I always listen to Sublime…I STILL and ALWAYS will love them. Fucking awsome music doesn't fade over time!!! If it kicked ass then, it kicks ass now!!!!

  38. 38

ABSOFUCKINLOUTLEY PEOPLE STILL LISTEN AND LOVE SUBLIME, ME BEING ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. IT IS A HELL OF ALOT BETTER THAN BUTT PLUG, LADY GAGA.

  39. 39

I'd say more people listen to Sublime than they do Sliimy or Semi Precious Weapons……

  40. 40

Re: Specter – very much so AGREE!!

  41. 41

Of course people listen to Sublime!! What the fuck is wrong with you?? Thats like saying do people still listen to Nirvana or Michael Jackson. Since when does someone dying mean their music is forgotten?? Bradley was a legend and Sublime made beauitful music. No reason to stop listening. Ever.

  42. 42

if you grew up in socal you're still listening to sublime, perez
and not listening to crap like lady gaga or katy perry.

  43. 43

Not we all love lady gaga now because you do. Does anyone still listen to NIRVANA? how about the Beatles? I love billboard top 40 followers that think that everyone follows the gravy train of shit that is out there.
Sublime is relevant and always will be

  44. Niloo says – reply to this

    44

SUBLIME IS LEGENDARY PEREZ. I would say 99% of people who grew up in the 90s listen to sublime

  45. 45

I think they should respect the wishes of Brad. If he stated that name was his, and his alone, Bud & Eric should respect that. Rome is a unoriginal copycat- almost note for note , tempo to tempo , even copying Brads little flows here & there…I mean hire someone, if you must, that brings originality to the mix, like brad did everytime he covered someone elses song…not someone who just wishes to Xerox themselves into Brad. I love Bud & Eric, but there were many ways to go around brads wishes and still be respectful, Keeping the name Sublime, which in my opinion would be like Krist or Dave hiring new singer for Kurt and calling it Nirvana, is just a grasp back at the limelight. Makes them sorta look like Del Mar and LBDAS werent hitmakers so lets ride on the dead homies who were.

  46. 46

I drove across the country one summer listening to Sublime. Yeah…..people do listen to them, Pezhead!

  47. 47

    FOREVER SUBLIME!!!!!!! LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!

  48. 48

Re: ClaraBow – Brads estate will ALWAYS get future cuts if "Sublime" continues to only play the songs he wrote at their concerts and gigs and use the name he liscenced. At Smokeout, the songs they performed were written by brad, so…yeah they'll still be coming up unless the band makes new original music, and even then- brad copyrighted Sublimes name, so pay up suckas!

  49. 49

Re: heatherrr – hey heather… ur a bitch… that is all

  50. 50

Sublime is the fucking goods!! I agree with Bud. This guy better be good because Bradley was the soul of the band and he wrote every song. I am anxious to see if this guy is good. RIP Bradley!!

  51. 51

NEWSFLASH not everyone just listens to tranny gaga….

  52. 52

    Re: kbill111
I don't think I'd call Long Beach Dub All Stars shitty. I saw them in Atlanta about 10 years ago and they were great. Not as great as Sublime, but no one can replace Brad. Sublime is the soundtrack to my college years and I will always love them!!!!

  53. 53

i felt compelled to answer this question. FUCK YES i still listen to sublime. As many people said, they're music is timeless. I loved them when i was young and i will love them when i am old and grey! They are amazing. actually most of the songs on my iphone are from sublime. All the people i know listen to them as well and have been for years. I actually saw their cove rband BADFISH play in my hometown and they were seriously amazing! People don't just like all the bubble gum crap you like. Plus you have unhealthy obsessions with the young disney children anyways.

  54. 54

This is wrong! Sublime performed at Myrtle Beach House of blues last Tuesday. So their show over the weekend in Cali is not their first show in a while! I love ya and read you everyday but get the stories right if you are going to report it.

  55. 55

Of course! I still listen to sublime its way better than the shiteous crap coming out now. whew lbc!

  56. 56

I still LOVE sublime!! I've been wanting to see the remaining members perform for 13+ years now.

  57. 57

Heck YES!!! I agree with Sublime it is their band. I still bump Santeria in my car!

  58. 58

Sublime is still in pretty heavy rotation at KROQ in LA

  59. 59

When you grab a hold of me
Tell me that I'll never be set free
But I'm a parasite creep and crawl I step into the night.
    Two pints of booze
Tell me are you a badfish too? Are you a badfish too?
Ain't got no money to spend
I hope the night will never end
    Lord knows I'm weak
Won't somebody get me off of this reef
Baby your a big blue whale
Grab the reef when all duck diving fails
I swim but I wish I've never learned
The water's too polluted with germs
I dive deep when it's ten feet overhead
Grab the reef underneath my bed
    It's underneath my bed
Ain't got no quarrels with God Ain't got no time to grow old
    Lord knows I'm weak
Won't somebody get me off of this reef

  60. 60

I love you to death perez but sometimes you don't know what the fuck you're talking about, Sublime is legendary any and every college student knows their songs. Yes people still listen to Sublime, if they started to perform again they would have a huge following.

  61. 61

Sublime rules. I went to middle school with rome (the new lead singer) which is totally crazy! we used to be hella good friends before he moved to long beach. im hella proud of him!

  62. 62

Re: 3boysmom – You're right. That was harsh:) I just think that Brad IS Sublime and I'm automatically going to dislike this "new" Sublime. Robbin' the Hood is one of my favorite albums and I can't even wrap my head around someone else singing those songs!

  63. 63

I think that with any band, if you REPLACE a main band-mate (like, the lead singer….) you should change the name of the band….with Alice In Chains….it would have been one thing if they just had Jerry Cantrell sing, but to replace Layne Staley kind of pissed me, along with a lot of other fans, off. The thought of them replacing Bradley Nowell pisses me off too….Sublime was Bradley, Bud and Eric..I don't agree with the estate of Bradley, but I see the whole not replacing them as a sign of respect…I am pretty sure that they wouldn't like to see themselves as "replaceable" after they pass. Bradley Nowell (as well as Layne Staley) = NOT replacable.

  64. 64

Re: kaustin – Don't get me wrong….I LOVE Sublime, however….you can't say they were comparable to the Beatles.

  65. 65

sublime owns! i smoke two joints!!

  66. 66

Perez only likes crappy dance music that's been around for five minutes.

  67. 67

no no no no no no no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They shouldnt do this, i dont care if it was thier band too. Bradley was the voice and main songwriter. They are going to fuck up the legacy of not only my favorite band of all time, but one of the greatest bands of the 90's. This is wrong, wrong, wrong.

  68. 68

Perez, or whoever writes on behalf of perez , is so incredibly ignorant when it comes to music. Does anyone still listen to Sublime? Of course they do. Do you really think everybody only listens to the shit from today? To the Taylor Swift's and the the Lady Gaga's? I personally love music from the 60s, 70s, 80s. I love SPACE ODDITY and that song is forty years old. YES , people listen to music that isn't neccesarily brand new –yes, STILL!

  69. 69

…. you said that on purpose to piss me off… EVERYONE but you still listens to Sublime. Don't you forget that shit.

  70. 70

everyone i know listens to sublime. i listen to sublime. sublime one of the best bands ever. perez you need to get with it.

  71. 71

OK, I just went to Youtube and listened to Rome with Sublime and he's pretty fucking good!! I am fired up!! He plays the songs as Bradley intended and he is really good at guitar. The acoustic version of Date Rape is great and I would pay to see these guys in concert. It's not his fault that Brad OD'd. They tried to help him. It's not like they have Lou Dog on stage with Rome so I am ok with it!! Check them out people I think you're going to like it!!

  72. 72

Sublime is an awsome band. Personally, I listen to their music quite often and find that the messages in the songs still resonate to this day.

  73. 73

perez, just b/c you have the musical attention span of a nanosecond doesn't mean the rest of the world is going to chase every fucking fad like you do.

Sublime was and is amazing and i was listening to Badfish just yesterday!

Bradley didn't own the bad, there were other guys in it, so they should be allowed to perform and Bradley's family need to get over it.

  74. 74

FUCK YEAH PEOPLE STILL LISTEN TO SUBLIME!

I LOVEEE SUBLIME and agree with Gaugh. Bradley will always be with the band. It's not like he quit.

    RIP Bradley Nowell

  75. 75

YES PEREZ YOU STUPID FUCK! people listen to sublime still!

  76. 76

Oh Perez, you are SO out of touch with GOOD music. FUCK YES people still listen to Sublime! Sometimes you are such an ignorant asshole.

  77. 77

OKAAY! Here we go again! With stoopid comments.
Plenty of people listen to SUBLIME and not all about MADONNA OR GAGA! There is other music in this world..

  78. 78

My heart goes out to Brads family, his loss was a huge tragedy…but I agree with the rest of the band. I had the awesome pleasure of seeing them at Smokeout on Saturday…AND THEY FUCKING ROCKED!!! the new singer is amazing…he sounds like Bradley did on their records. it was a surreal, wonderful treat to see them. and I will be buying their next album. if you have a chance GO CATCH SUBLIME!!

  79. 79

this is the best news ever!! The band should be able to perform and record under Sublime!!!! and YES Perez lots of us still love and listen to Sublime~

  80. 80

I'm so glad to see everyone supporting Sublime. Perez=Ignorant.

  81. 81

perez come on.. sublime and their music is the shit! i still listen to them all the time. adults and teens still listen to them.. when i go to parties everyone likes listen to them. sublime is GOOD music.. compared to all the shitty music you post on your websitel.

  82. 82

    RIP Bradley

  83. 83

I love all the comments!!! Perez, that is seriously the one of the dumbest questions you have ever asked!! Sublime is still one of the best bands of all time!!!!! No one could ever match there music and the vibe it gives!! SUBLIME will live on forever!! RIP Bradley

  84. 84

    Sublime is amazeballs.
To take a phrase from you my friend.

  85. 85

Perez your dumb, Sublime is still rocking even after all these years. I LOVE THEM. Really, you want to act like you know music, you are so not into good music. Who listens to GAGA and can honestly say that she is a great band. shes a trend. Your a trend. Sublime is a up there with rolling stones. I don't care if people don't agree with me, I enjoy every song they've made. Even I saw red with Gwen Stefani. They are great. She is also great. you suck. peace!

VIVA SUBLIME HAHAHA! J/K LOVE SUBLIME!

  86. 86

come on perez, i really don't know anyone that doesn't still listen to, and loveeee sublime! badfish, a cover band of theirs, is highly successful because people still love sublime. great music, unlike some of the music posted on here.

  87. 87

tee hee my dorky boyfriend still listens to Sublime, but then again, he still thinks Nirvana is the greatest band of all time. :P

  88. 88

SUBLIME effing ROCKS. tell the his estate to BLOW themselves. Bradley is rocking out up above to his boys.

  89. 89

Perez, you describe yourself as someone who is so passionate about music, but you sure make a lot of stupid comments. Does anyone still listen to Sublime? Are you kidding me? Just because a band doesn't have a song on the top 100 doesn't mean they're forgotten. You always say dumb shit like this. Get a clue!

  90. 90

um yeah perez, people still listen to sublime. if you had any taste in real music you might have an appreciation for them too. and i don't agree with them performing, as much as i think brad wouldn't have cared, brad WAS that band. there is no sublime without brad.

  91. 91

Re: ashtonsmommy – Um…. Yeah. I live in Myrtle Beach, and unless they opened for Shinedown, they did not play last Tuesday. And they didn't. Sick Puppies did. Looks like stories are getting effed up all around.

  92. 92

And there is nothing "punk" about Sublime. It's called ska, genius.

  93. 93

    Re: Slutstick – I couldn't agree more.

  94. 94

Ummmmmm I listen to Sublime every day of my life. It's only the best fuggin band of all time. I agree with Gaugh, they should still be Sublime. No one will ever replace Brad in his family's eyes or his fan's eyes, but I'd also love some new Sublime with a kickass new singer.

  95. 95

    Sublime= real music. Not like Gaga's tranny ass..Perez you're such a douche

  96. Tru82 says – reply to this

    96

Are you kidding, who doesn't listen to Sublime? You couldn't have a better California staple than Sublime. Perez you are really out of touch with a big demographic of people out there. Not everone is constantly listening to dance or pop music. And I agree that Erick and Bud should be able to create music under the name Sublime, like they said, they've paid their dues.

  97. 97

    A. I still listen to them ALL the time. You just have terrible taste in music.

    B. This is ridiculous. His family doesn't own the band, like they said, it's THEIR band.

  98. 98

Perez i like you dude but sometimes you're a fucking idiot! What the hell do u mean "does anyone even listen to Sublime"? Its more like who DOESNT?!! They're music is legendary and people will forever listen to them. They have been and they continue to as each generation discovers them!

  99. 99

Punk band…? You're an idiot, as usual.
And, fuck yes, people still listen to Sublime! Do you ever check your facts when you make these snide comments about good music YOU'VE never listened to…?
Sorry that Sublime isn't gay enough for you.

  100. 100

Yes Mario, plenty of people still listen to Sublime. Not everyone only listens to the newest pop bullshit.
