Warner Bros. Shuts Down Harry Potter Dinner Party!

| Filed under: Legal MattersHarry Potter

So much for Halloween fun!

A woman in the UK was forced to cancel her Harry Potter-themed dinner party after receiving a warning from the Warner Bros. legal department.

The event included an ambiance of talking paintings and a dinner of pumpkin soup, butterbeer and cauldron cakes, but all fun halted when she received the following letter:

"While we are delighted you are such a fan of the Harry Potter series, unfortunately your proposed use of the Harry Potter properties… without our consent would amount to an infringement of Warner's rights."

They may have won the Potter battle, but the studio did not win the war!

The party continues under the name Generic Wizard Night, but because she used to make money off of these dinners, the copyright-Nazis put a stop to it.

According to the hostess, "The night is totally a fan's tribute and is a one-off. It's not like I'm running a permanent Harry Potter restaurant…It is basically dinner parties that are paid for. I'm the cook and hostess. Each dinner takes four days of work and I make very little money from it."

Do U have a favorite generic wizard?!

My Perezcious's favourite generic wizard is the one he fancies in R-Patz's pants.

  3. 3

oh warner bros, you really do suck
and my favorite generic wiz will always be Harry

  4. 4

Asses! But if she's making any money then ya she should change it.

  5. 5

is anyone watching the celtics game??

  6. 6

I'm no Harry Potter geek, but I'd like to go!!!!

Re: Hodge Podge – Bahahahaha funny & latently creepy as usual Hodge Podge.

I would love such a party. I was conviced I was going to go to Hogwarts and marry Harry as a child. He's still my favorite, but in the books, I got the most laughs from the Weasley twins.

She should be stopped…..it is 100% copyright infringement - had she not charged….then that would have been a fan giving a dinner…..but that is not the case. to make money off that is not on the up and up…..and she is lucky all she got was a cease and desist……..they could have asked her for the money she had made in the past……

they really need to start appreciating free advertising!

Whatever…I'm behind WB 100% on this one. They have to protect their investment or their will be crazy Harry Potter stuff popping up all over the place. And I'm pretty sure WB wouldn't have gotten involved if the party was JUST a small, family event. The woman was charging entry…that's copyright infringement regardless of the situation. Harry Potter is a billion dollar investment…so of course WB doesn't want to lose any money. All the Harry Potter wizards are my favorite…and of course Gandalf from LOTR too. :D

"I don't make much money from it" - dumbass, you can't profit off copyrighted works, even if it's "just a little." How about celebrating with a potluck dinner instead of throwing a party and expecting people to pay for it?

Seriously WB you made the most money of any movie internationally last year at 930 million. Leave the small fish alone.

  14. 14

    Favorite generic wizard: Beardy.

It was stupid for her to try to make money off it. If churches can't host gatherings to show the Super Bowl- WITHOUT MAKING MONEY OFF IT- then this woman shouldn't try to make "very little money" off people by hosting a theme dinner.
That being said…I am a HP fanatic and would love to go…if it was free.

Seriously WB after taking in 930 million internationally do you really need to go after small time stuff like this?

this was in our paper 3 days ago. You're slow, Perez.

Boo on Warner Brothers. Where's the harm?

My favorite Generic Wizard is Torch. He's six-foot five, a grafitto artist, and lives in my garage. He makes cars disappear.

i can only wonder that you use the word NAZI in this post. I know that you yourself always pay attention when others use any word in the wrong context but you truely use words that are most dangerous and hurtfull to german and jewish people like me…..enjoy success on the expense of others, I will put a prayer around for you, from the bottom of my heart, since you know 'what comes around goes around' …..xoxoxoxoxox

  20. 20

    Sounds fun.

  21. 21

if it was a charity I would have been mad but since she's making profit off of it, you know what, WB is right on this one. It's using the property for personal gain. She's lucky she only got a cease and desist letter.

  22. 22

    boooo, warner brothers.

  23. 23

    i love harry potter
she shouldnt make money off it though
    its harry potter
warner bros shouldnt be a holes either tho

UM. Wb made like 1 billion dollars in the US summer box office this year. Give a single mother some slack, i would've love to dine in a Harry Potter themed resturant!

  25. 25

Really Perez? This was in the UK papers on MONDAY!!! Get with it

  26. 26

I kinda see why WB did this but…still sucks. I'm a huge HP fan and I'd die to go to something like this! I got to go to a HP themed tour in Britain last year and we had a splendid banquet, but I guess those are done with the WB ok?

  27. 27

    Hello Perez,
Very honoured to be featured on your site.
Would you like me to send you an upskirt shot? ;)

  28. 28

    My stick!

  29. 29

    money hungry bastards

  30. 30

How did WB even find out about this?!! There's no way it was JUST a small party. She must've had fliers up or maybe someone ratted her out because they got upset that she was charging for entry.

  31. 31

You would think WB would have better things to do… OMG

  32. 32

If this is correct, then how come Disney hasn't paid my family for inventing the Pirates of the Caribean series? WE had the first pirate party and I was Ashira DeMarco. WE played and danced all day.

THEN, a movie showed up and obviously copied us. WE did not get paid for that. I have witnesses as to the accurate sequence of most things in this world.

I say, bring it on…. YOU might not have got the letter from the actual registered owner of Warner Bros. SHE says PARTY!!! Keep it family-fun, moral and age appropriate. Once in a while remind people that it was actually God that made the earth for them to party on. And say a blessing before you eat. YOU now have permission to emulate the girl who lived in an 8×8 bedroom in the basement of her chosen foster home - because it was her choice of space. Also, partially because it had a door that I could easily stumble into when I had finished partying with my friends.

    Re: beeeeemer

i hate to defend her, 'cos harry potter really is a big sack of shit, and WB doubly so, but the lady in question runs dinner parties every week - and they're always full, so she is in no way profiting from using harry potter's name, sh'ed still be making exactly the same amount of money with or without the use of Rowling and Co's AWFUL BANAL rubbish, she just did it because her poor daughter is a fan

  36. 36

    Malfoy… all the way
