Patrick Swayze's Widow Speaks

As we previously mentioned, Patrick Swayze's widow, Lisa Niemi, spoke at a roundtable discussion on Grief, Healing and Resilience at the Women's Conference in Long Beach on Tuesday.

Equipped with incredible strength, Lisa described loss as "an animal all of its own" and that her sadness could be felt "on a cellular level."

And considering they were married for 34 years, we are amazed and applaud her for being ready to talk only six weeks after his passing. It must have been cathartic for her!

"When the grief takes you, it's like your body is not your own," she said of her process. "I'm just going with the flow. I know I have to go through it."

But, it's her closest friends that have helped her in the most difficult times!

"I have a few girlfriends that are just amazing. They have made themselves available to me 24/7. They say, 'We don't care if it's 2 in the morning, call me'," said Niemi. "I was in the middle of a full-blown panic attack one evening … and I picked up the phone and called one, which is really hard for me to do because I'm used to being so self-sufficient and taking care of myself, but the very act of picking the phone up to call someone helped to calm me."

And she refuses to lose hope!

"I've spent two thirds of my life with him … My regret is that I didn't tell him that I loved him enough over that entire 34 years," she continued as her voice began to shake. "I am so grateful for what I had and my connection to him, and part of me believes that I will see him again and I'm just going to have to go on until then."

Heartbreaking!

Stay strong, bb!

ahhhhhhhhhhhh what a lovely marriage they had. Why do people have to die? Life is a sick joke.

That is so sad. My heart goes out to her. Those two had such a long and passionate love affair, the kind of relationship any married couple would be so lucky to have. I cannot imagine how much pain she is in. Patrick Swayze was such a gentleman and he'll be truly missed by all of his fans.

…I don't get why the good die relatively young and some old bastards are still around.

Amazing couple and an amazing marriage.
Patrick was one of my favorite actors. May he RIP and may Lisa go on,knowing that the love they shared was beautiful, real and very rare.

Oh my god that's so sad :( my eyes actually filled with tears reading that.. I can't begin to imagine the pain she, and anyone else who has lost a loved one, feels..

very sad, I know exactly what she means about at the "cellular level" the grief I felt over a double loss I took damn near killed me! it took 2 years just to come out of the shock of it, just now trying to begin the healing…my deepest sympathies to her and their loved ones!

    so sad :(

Patrick was a class act and Lisa was very fortunate to have him in her life. Kudos and strength to her, and may Patrick RIP.

It makes me cry thinking that they loved each other SO much and now they can't be together. Very few people ever find a love like that, and it's heartbreaking what happened, but at least they had all those years together.

I'm still pissed that Patrick's death was SO over-shadowed by Michael Jackson's death… I realize Michael was an "icon", but so was Patrick, in his own right… I'm glad his wife has a close network of friends–that's exactly what she needs… It's amazing what the support of friends can help you accomplish!

divorce is more traumatic than death of a spouse; every study bears that out, and every person who has been through BOTH will tell you the same. she's lucky; she has money, she had love, and he wasn't murdered or killed in some ridiculous war. they had a good life. "Cellular level" is a phrase I've used for years, I wonder if she stole it, LOL! she could have found it in my book….

believe me, it's worse if after 34 years your husband leaves and marries someone else.

she isn't incredibly brave; it's just what people go through. better 34 years than 14.

and to the other poster, duh, lots of "bad" people die young and lots of "good" people live seemingly forever….

wow, so sad! My heart goes out to her.

See Mario, this is what a decent post and story is about. The true emotions being released and spoken of to others. A message such as this garner the satidfaction and feelings of the readers. No white markings, no cryptic comment just a great picture of a loving couple. Learn from this and stop the other side of your sick mind if you can. No truth better told Karen

The good die young because then we care. If the bastards died, who would care? If we care we are still human. Think about it. She didn't need to "tell him she loved him more". Me thinks 34 years, thick and thin. Trust me, Patrick knew he was loved. Show it. Talk is cheap.

Weren't you one of the ones on his case to quit smoking when he enjoyed the habit and was living under a terminal diagnosis. Also didn't you publish pics of him coming and going from the hospital in his frail state. I'm just sayin'

  17. 17

at least she had 34 years with him and had time to prepare for his death, my husband died after being married just over a year from a fatal heart attack at 34 and left me with a baby, i didnt get a chance to tell him anything, 1 minute standing, the next dead. i would rather have had her circumstances

  18. 18

    Heartbreaking…
Blessings to Lisa and the life she has left to live for herself. Patrick will always be with her and is only a memory away. I hope she finds peace and love again.
