If You Like Cheeseburgers, Natalie Portman Thinks You Might As Well Be A Rapist (Sort Of)

Natalie Portman is a smart girl. She graduated from Harvard and all.

So you would think she would be smart enough to know that equating people who eat meat to rapists wouldn't work out too well for her.

Yes, we are smart enough to understand that she is attempting to shock people into understanding her point-of-view and doesn't really feel that way, but it is still unsettling.

Natalie submitted an essay to the Huffington Post, discussing her views as a vegan activist and supporter of the radical literature Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals. She goes on the defense of the author's views and her own beliefs, while also digging a hole for herself.

She writes:

"I say that Foer's ethical charge against animal eating is brave because not only is it unpopular, it has also been characterized as unmanly, inconsiderate, and juvenile. But he reminds us that being a man, and a human, takes more thought than just "This is tasty, and that's why I do it." He posits that consideration, as promoted by Michael Pollan in The Omnivore's Dilemma, which has more to do with being polite to your tablemates than sticking to your own ideals, would be absurd if applied to any other belief (e.g., I don't believe in rape, but if it's what it takes to please my dinner hosts, then so be it)."

Dark! Taking things a little too far, if you ask us.

How about from now on, you eat your lettuce and we'll eat our steak and neither one of us brings up rape as a means of comparison?

We think that's the best solution.

What do U guys think about what she wrote?

SHUT UP she is annoying me! i am native american and animals are meant for the food chain nutcase! i dont care who she is we are meant to hunt and eat meat! i respect vegetarians she thinks cuz she is a celebrity and harvard grad that we all will listen to her in awe….im gonna eat my steak and enjoy it!

    2. 402

she isnt comparing it to rape, she is saying how one might agree to it if their table mates are saying they believe in it, to appease them or whatever, and she is talking about the author, not her views….still….WE EAT MEAT!!!

    3. 403

      Re: popstar2k2
She said this book turned her vegan. In this piece he references no less. I agree with you otherwise.

      Re: sarbear0404

ha! you sound uneducated and heartless! animals are part of the food chain! other animals eat other animals. that is the way it is! some people are vegans some or not…dont call anyone uneducated and heartless for it. i dont agree with the treatment alot of these places do, it sickens me….but still….i like to eat fish and seafood

    5. 405

Oh, she doesn't believe in rape - when it suits her obviously. She signed the free Polanski petition - an admitted and convicted rapist - and yet she doesn't believe in it. She is a fucktard. I wrote a "gentler" opinion in the Huffington Post but because I didn't agree with her they didn't post it!!

    6. 406

as someone who has been sexually assaulted and eats meal, i'm going to personally have myself a big, juicy steak tonight and dedicate it to natalie. too bad she's not on the menu tonight, i'm sure she'd taste excellent with some proper seasoning.

    7. 407

I find it highly offensive as an occasional meat-eater to be compared to a rapist. Bad choice of words Natalie!

    8. 408

She wasn't equating eating meat with being a rapist - she was giving a drastic example of how people may tailor their conversation at a dinner party, despite whether or not it is an adequate statement of their own personal beliefs, in order to prevent offending those who are sharing their dinner party. Please read more carefully before making such an accusation.

Secondly, to many who are involved in the animal rights movement/sustainable agriculture movement the killing of animals may actually be more morally and ethically offensive than the rape of a person. Many who follow this ideology view that all life is equal, whether human, animal or sea life, and that the organized farming, harvesting, eating and the use of meat, ski, fur or byproducts is just as reprehensible as the act of rape. If her comments were made in support of this ideology, then they should be viewed in the proper context of her beliefs.

    9. 409

What about Teddy, Perez? Would you eat him?

    10. 410

Re: BISOUS – Very, very well said.

'Animals eat other animals. We are animals who eat other animals.'

    11. 411

some people eat meat, some don't. Some are vegan, others not. We need *tolerance* for our choices in life. Just because I eat meat now and again does not make me heartless. It is *my* choice and some vegans/Vegetarians need to respect it, like I respect their choices.

In addition, those who *do* eat meat need to except that some people do not agree with it.

    12. 412

People who eat meat don't attack people who don't nearly as much as the other way around. It's getting old, and there is nothing wrong with eating what our bodies have evolved to survive on. Can we just respect people's food choices and leave it at that? Why does there have to be animosity? It's uncomfortable and super unnecessary. It's not like people who eat meat in the U.S. are eating pets, we're eating animals that were bred specifically for our consumption. We meat-eaters don't rain on your parade, so stop making us feel like we should be ashamed for something that is only natural!!!!!!!!

    13. 413

I didn't know that there was so many retards who would have all us meat eaters shot lol. I love how she says that eating meat is unpopular. Maybe in lala land that is true but in the rest of the world eating meat is still totally acceptable. Also to the jackass who said that a girl died from eating a hamburger: I think you'll find that she died because she got food poisoning because the meat was bad sweetie not because she ate meat.

    14. 414

don't mess with vegans. They will fuck you up because they are *hungry*

    15. 415

Actually I think you'll find that there's a lot of truth in what she's saying; in the production of meat animals are impregnated against their will but that's the price the animals have to pay if you want your fucking cheeseburgers. Humans just are the most selfish animals out there.

    16. 416

ITS NOT RAPE…ITS COLD BLOODED MURDER YOU BONEHEAD! TRY HAVING YOUR BOWELS PUNCTURED BY A BLADE BEFORE THEY DECIDE TO CLUB YOU OVER THE HEAD BUT NOT BEFORE INJECTING YOU CHALK FULL OF HORMONES SO BADLY YOUR EYES POP OUT WHILE DEFACATING FROM SHOCK. YOUR BABY BOY GETS TAKEN TO BE SLAUGHTERED INTO VEAL AND THEY BRUISE YOUR NIPPLES AFTER MORE HORMONES TO SQUEEZE THE LIFE OUT OF YOUR NIPPLES. AFTER ALL THAT YOU HEAD TO THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE WHERE THEY TASE YOU AFTERWHICH YOU GO INTO SHOCK. THEN MACHINES COME IN AND SLICE YOUR SKIN PIECE BY PIECE UNTIL YOUR MEMBRANES SPREAD ALL OVER THE FACTORY LIKE MEATY BUTTER. YOU HAVE NERVE PEREZ TALKING SHIT…YOU LOOK LIKE YOU HAVENT MISSED TOO MANY MEALS BUDDY…KEEP EATING THAT STEAK AND AFTER THE DISEASE DIAGNOSIS WE'LL SEE WHO ENJOYS THE LETTUCE

    17. 417

      we need meat to survive.
      It is natural.
We've been doing since the beginning of time.
Next thing you know they will be against lions eating zebras.
      Retards.
You can have your own opinion, but don't belittle those who have a different opinion.

    18. 418

      Re: TallThinMan
Its true but I prefer not to think about that when I'm scarffing down hambergers.

oooo i feel like having me a massive steak now…..with mushroom sauce and fries yeeeeeeeeeeah

    20. 420

e.g. means 'example' not 'in comparison' dim wit (that means stupid)…. she was making a point not a comparison. GET AN EDUCATION.

    21. 421

I wish she would shut the EFF up. What a stupid bitch.

    22. 422

Re: sarbear0404 – And you're an ignorant idiot trying to get attention. Obviously eating meat has nothing to do with being educated, and plenty of people who love animals eat them. Natalie probably should have kept this to herself, especially with the rape comparison. The food chain isn't imaginary, and we're at the top of it.

    23. 423

      I agree with her 200%!

    24. 424

Lol, that comment could be turned around on her. What if I went to my vegan friend's house for dinner? Does that make him the rapist in this scenario?

    25. 425

i love me some steak!!mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm tasty

    26. 426

Re: hollahoedown – those aren't meat.

    27. 427

I definitely wish that slaughter houses could be more humane. But we are made to eat meat. It's nature.. ! Natural.. Look at the animals and how they live.

    28. auds says – reply to this

      428

For being such a "smart" girl she fails to recognize that we've all got to eat, and we've all got to get proper nutrition. If she wants to stop creatures from eating meat, she should start with the lions in Africa, tell them they need to eat grasses instead of Zebras. Maybe they'll eat her instead and the problem will be solved?!

    29. 429

The argument Natalie used is called a logical extension. It means taking the logic of the other side, and taking it to it's natural extention which is ridiculous and no one will agree with. The idea is to show that the logic the other side is using to justify their argument is flawed. She wasn't comparing eating meat to raping babies.

Futher Sarbear0404, making comments like "anyone that eats meat is uneducated and heartless" is ignorant and detrimental to your cause. There is nothing wrong with eating meat. The problem is the treatment of animals that become meat e.g. battery chickens.

    30. 430

Good explanation by FemaleFilmMajor. It's difficult for people who come from struggling backgrounds to go vegan or vegetarian. It's more expensive than consuming a small amount of meat. (A small amount of meat is all you need a few times a week!)

    31. 431

I think this bitch is stupid. Not everyone is ok with starving themselves & weighing 100 pounds, fuck that! Hello there wouldn't be no people if we never ate meat. What did she want them to eat leaves???

    32. 432

DUDE, billions of animals, yearly, are born into nightmarish conditions to live for a small while until they are slaughtered. Why can't all the animal eaters see it's not about the end result of actually eating the dead - it's the immense cruelty that leads up to it. Shame on you, Perez.. plus, your statements are wrong about what she is implying.

    33. 433

You dont even know what you are eating. Do you have any idea the amount of hormones and antibiotics that are administered to livestock every year? Do you know the FDA BEGGED the prescription drug companies not to sell to the livestock producers the antibiotic that would be effective against things like an ANTHRAX outbreak?? Guess what, they did it anyway, and we are becoming desensitized to the antibiotics that could SAVE us because factory farming requires DRUGS to keep the livestock healthy due to the horrible conditions. You are all sheep. You eat what is on the shelf and dont consider, HEY maybe the hormones they give these animals so they grow so DAMN big will harm me, and perhaps there is SCIENTIFIC proof that those hormones are causing our girls to hit puberty quicker. . .no, lets just eat that tasty steak!! Hope you enjoy it enough to justify the cruelty and unhealthy production that RIGHT NOW are contaminating your body with levels of antibiotics and hormones you are not MEANT to have in your body. NO ONE THINKS!!!! Its not the steak I am scared of. FIND OUT WHAT YOU ARE EATING! ASK QUESTIONS!!!!

    34. 434

I got your back Natalie and your front..:-) Beautiful and intelligent, a very good combination…She didn't equate eating meat to rapists that is people are perceiving it especially the writer…She is referring to people…"being polite to your tablemates than sticking to your own ideals" then she uses the example of "(e.g., I don't believe in rape, but if it's what it takes to please my dinner hosts, then so be it)."" You can replace that example with anything else…."How about I don't want to see two Guys kissing, should i stay to be polite or walk of in disgust?..:-)…If she is intellectually superior to the writer then how can the writer truly understand we she means..? My take on the meat eating thing is the same as everything else…Moderation…same goes for sweets and alcohol etc….There is no study that is going to convince anyone that we weren't designed to eat meat pssss…We weren't designed to eat everything in sight…

    35. 435

Re: MegMort – I understand what you are saying but it is also not realistic based on the world population. Yes, we need to reduce all forms intake…The 1/2 the grain we use to make beer would help reduce world hunger…We do have to move towards moderation and good health if you reduce the amount of meat demand then there would be need for hormones to keep up with demand…Pick your choice of product and they all have some form chemical ingredient for shelf life…should we all go back to farming? education and moving towards balance is key…When I say balance I am also speaking of spiritual balance too..

    36. 436

In her essay she describes different religions' rituals as to support her support (lawl):: Catholics dont consider the bread and wine a representation of Jesus' body - it is percieved AS His body. that is a) with blessing, it becames Holy body of Jesus (the blessed hosts have its own little house on the alter like vip treatment of crackers because of this..) b)…a) sounds kinda like mystical cannibalism and c) so ya, this ivy league.. admissions should based strictly on IQ …
      ppeace
p.s i still kinda like miss. portman tho…and veganism is ok. its just the cheese that i miss . oh and the bacon *

    37. 437

Anyone else feel like a eating a cheeseburger??? Yummy :)

    38. 438

*ROLLEYES* so tired of idiots like this. Try tolerance for once, rather than assuming the rest of the world must be bullied into living the way YOU think they should! I eat meat, wear fur, etc and I like the way I am and won't change to please you! Too bad if you think it's politically incorrect :P

    39. 439

The problem that i have with her argument and those that are for the condemnation of meat is that their arguments are utterly biased. they condemn the killing of animals but yet they bring no mention of the fact that thousands of acres of rain forest are cleared for the production of the soy beans that are needed for their meat alternative. In the process of which countless animal and plant species are wiped out. nor do they mention the fact of the declining and disappearing honey bee population that is needed to grow fruits due to ill treatment. those facts in themselves negate many of the arguments against against vast/any meat consumption for what they are which is pure dross. But as with most (for lack of better term) movements they do not bring to light the negative aspects of said movement just the negative aspects of the opposition. the fact of the matter is that both sides are not environmentally or ethically viable.

    40. 440

continued- The reason for that being is that the human race has expanded to more than what the earth can provide naturally or otherwise for any vast amount of time say five hundred years and that is being optimistic to the extreme. Yet here we are quibbling about the symptoms as if they were the disease. Though I fully understand why we do so for to even think about it for a moment shakes one to their very core and the treatment of the disease is one very few people can even think about. The disease is us the human race. Now I know it may seem cold and callous but, it’s the truth and it saddens me deeply that even with all are purported higher intelligence we were not and as far as I can see will not achieve a balance. Now I know I have no way of not sounding like a heartless bastard so I won’t try. but truth and logic a usually disheartening and the only option i can see to solve the worlds woes is one i would not even consider personally and that is humankinds' destruction
