Larry David Feels The Heat From Christians For Urinating On Jesus
Select Christians are very displeased with comedian Larry David and the latest episode of his HBO show, Curb Your Enthusiasm.
In the episode, Larry's character accidentally urinates on a painting of Jesus. Because he's taking a pill that makes his urine exit the body more, umm, forcefully, it splashes onto the painting giving it the appearance of a tear on Jesus' face. Other characters think its a miracle after seeing the "tear" and hilarity ensues.
We think it's pretty funny but Deal Hudson of InsideCatholic.com isn't laughing. He says:
"Why is it that people are allowed to publicly show that level of disrespect for Christian symbols? If the same thing was done to a symbol of any other religions — Jewish or Muslim — there'd be a huge outcry. It's simply not a level playing field. Somebody should [apologize]. When is it going to stop? When is common sense going to dictate that people realize this willingness of artists to do to Christianity what they would never do to Judaism or Islam?"
As expected HBO responded to the controversy. They say:
"Anyone who follows Curb Your Enthusiasm knows that the show is full of parody and satire. Larry David makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. The humor is always playful and certainly never malicious."
It's true! If anyone is the butt of the joke on Curb, it's almost always Larry! Bill Donohue of the Catholic league begs the question: "Would he think it's comedic if someone urinated on a picture of his mother."
Actually, in the context of a television episode, we think he would!

At the end of the day it is comedy from folks who have made way more jokes about Judaism. To the vast majority of the world Jesus is just a man in history. I'll agree that it definitely is on the border of poor taste, but with Catholics/Christians praying over potato chips in the form of the Virgin Mary and unwashed windows that look like Jesus, they kind of make this ripe for parody. I myself am far more concerned for the two men headed into prayer services in North Hollywood and were shot by an armed gunman.

I'm not religious, and I didn't see this episode, but I do think that there is more tolerance for negative behavior against certain religions than others. Of course, those who are offended can just not watch and not support the show.

This is how things go bad. Was it funny? No. I don't believe in Jesus, never have but I do find it very disrespectful and a true double standard with Jews, Muslims, etc. Those religions don't get touched because they have instilled fear that they cannot be touched without painful repercussions. Yet, Christians can. When people start saying that things are o.k., that unchecked evil goes further and further until it becomes everyday life and strengthens the great indifference most have for each other. Example is the girl in San Francisco that was gang-raped publicly and people saw, the monsters bragged and no one, NOT ONE person came to her aid in any way. I have been a christian for 26yrs and I saw the episode. I thought it was hilarious. Obviously they didn't have Larry seriously pee on the Jesus painting, it would be a different story if in real life he took a Jesus painting and pissed on it but he didn't. First of all, Christianity is the dominant religion in the United States. It doesn't proportionately suffer from bigotry or oppression, it holds huge influence in the political sphere and the media… Christianity is ingrained and assumed in our culture! It is in NO WAY like making fun of someone who is already oppressed. There is no comparison.
Second of all, because of that, a harmless but thought-provoking force like comedy and satire is REQUIRED for a sane and healthy culture. People do go off the deep end with their beliefs, and that hardly makes them immune to being made fun of- it means they SHOULD be made fun of, because it has the potential to restore some sanity to the culture. Many people say comedy is the only way you can tell the truth. (BTW, this is NOT a defense of ALL comedy! There are lines to be drawn! Unclever jokes about doing violence to someone, or relying on cheap stereotypes to make fun of or do violence to the already oppressed is not cool).

Finally, this episode does make fun of the oppressed but again, I believe it typically manages to do so it in a tasteful and vital way, and it is in the context of making fun of everybody.
