How awful!

A young singer/songwriter from Toronto named Taylor Mitchell was attacked and ultimately killed by a pack of coyotes.

The young girl was hiking alone on a trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park this week when she was confronted by two coyotes. Several other hikers in the area heard her screams and cries for help and immediately called 911. When help arrived, she was airlifted to a hospital, but at that point she was already in critical condition.

She succumbed to her injuries early yesterday.

We send our condolences out to her family and friends at this most difficult time.

    plus her music probably sucks…..

who gets killed by coyotes??? lol…only pu-c a55 canadians who cant sing..good riddance

  7. 7

Being from Nova Scotia, this really was a shock. Coyotes are not known to do this often…but the coyotes in the highlands are a cross between wolves and coyotes so they are much larger. It is horrible and a terrible loss. And she was only 19.

  8. 8

OMG I SWEAR I DREAMED THAT! JUST SHE WAS ME! SCARED! ó.O

  9. 9

    awful.. rest in peace.. +

Re: dopemcee – You are sick

  11. 11

thats fucking terrible, but coyotes aren't very big, i wonder why she couldn't fight them off…i mean…idk i guess this is just proof that if ur skinny you probably shouldn't hike alone around wild animals…i mean im not super strong but i could certainly scare off a couple of fucking coyotes, its not like it was a bear or a moose…but idk if it was a pack (i read it was only 2) then maybe its difficult. just further proof that we need to quit restricting wild life habitats and give the animals more room to be wild

  12. 12

    fuck off dopemcee
    she didnt chose to die
    show a little respect

  13. 13

Re: BitchSpray – whatever hater. my condolences to her family.

  14. 14

my condolences to her family. did the coyotes have rabies maybe?

  15. 15

That is absolutely awful….omg….how terrifying!! I cannot imagine– so sad! I am never going hiking!! Rare for coyotes to hunt people like that….

  16. 16

    awww. that's so sad. :(

  17. 17

Why couldn't they go after Celine Dion

  18. 18

Why on earth would anyone go hiking ALONE??

  19. 19

Re: dopemcee – thats some mentally fucked up comment, dude!
but… i have to admit that i laughed about that shit :s me sick too. :s
anyway…. i send my condolences out to her family and friends!! r.i.p

Somewhere out there Natalie Portman has a big smile on her face. Liberals are very strange.

  21. 21

    Re: dopemcee
What are you, 13? You're an ass, start acting human.

  22. 22

Perez, it was not a pack of coyotes. It was 2. And yeah, she was silly to hike alone as coyotes are not the only animal to be afraid of in the woods but it's still very sad. Kind of unusual for coyotes to come around in pairs but they are probably very hungry (on the verge of starving) at this time of year. And fighting them off may seem easy enough to some but that's like fighting off 2 large dogs (like a German Shepherd)-not so easy.

  23. 23

Not to blame the victim, but maybe she thought they were dogs and tried to pet them or something. Coyote attacks on grown adults are extremely rare. One person (counting adults and children) gets bit by a coyote a year.

3 million children (just children, and just those that seek medical help) get bit by domestic dogs a year.

You are way more likely to get bit by a dog than a coyote (or a wolf).

  24. 24

That's so sad and what a horrible way to die.
my condolences go out to the family.

  25. 25

Why didn't the hikers run to her aid first! Such a sad way to die, RIP.

  26. 26

Re: dopemcee – - You are heartless, a young girl died. There is nothing funny about it.

  27. 27

Re: dopemcee – HOW HORRIBLE? HOW CAN YOU SAY THIS KIND OF THING. THIS POOR GIRL HAD TO GO THROUGH THE UNBEARABLE TORTURE OF BEING MAULED TO PIECES BY CYOTES, THEN YOU SAY GOOD RIDDANCE?!! SHE FELT HERSELF GO THROUGH THE PAIN BY HERSELF!! REST IN PEACE ANGEL, XO

  28. 28

Really very sad and an extremely RARE occurance. It's fair to say that one shouldn't hike alone…and the question as to whether the animals were rabid should be asked. Coyotes like wolves are generally pretty shy, and when you see one, at least here in the wilds of northern Ontario, the first thing you ask yourself is, "what's wrong with this animal?" Then avoid and be cautious. Sad, sad, sad, both for the woman and the animals running out of habitat.

  29. 29

Lets see if people say the same thing about you when you die a horrible death, freak. Your the loser. Aint nobody care about you.

  30. 30

Re: dopemcee – Lets see if people say the same thing about you, freak. Your the loser. Aint nobody care about you.

  31. 31

God some of the comments on here are sick. The world is full of such sick fucks. Lets see you laugh when you get ripped to shreds. What goes around comes around real hard.

  32. 32

    Re: dopemcee

Hey Troll, the only loser I can see would be you… Maybe you aren't as "dope" an emcee as you think you are. Just because you live in your mom's basement and she thinks you are dope, does not mean you are…. Sorry babe.

  33. 33

Re: dopemcee – Another intelligent post by the chronic masturbator.

  34. 34

Liberals are douchebags. People kill an animal and they protest. Animal kills a human WHO CARES! Animals are useless except for their tasty meat. They don't contribute to society.

  35. 35

Re: dopemcee – Going hiking on your own is for loosers? FUCK well being so disrespectful towards someone who has just died is for loosers, dushbags, and just REALLY BAD PEOPLE… What a horrible personality. I'm sorry for Taylor's mom, dad and friends… and I'm sorry for yours too Dopemcee…

  36. 36

now you gunna wear a coyote ate my singer shirt perez you fucktard…see how wrong that dingo one was now.
condolances go out to the other hikers and people that tried to help. what a traumatic experience that woud have been.

  37. 37

I can't think of a more terrible way to go. How sad, so young. I'd wanna die if this happened to my child.

  38. 38

why does everyone get all upset and defensive of someone they dont know or give a shit about? stupid girl for going alone.

  39. 39

I have walked the same hiking trail many times, its so upsetting that this has happened! The RCMP found one of the coyotes yesterday and killed it and are now trying to figure out why the animals would act this way.

  40. 40

This has been such a big thing up here in Nova Scotia. Especially since this only 1 of 2 deaths EVER in North America caused by a coyote attack

  41. 41

    Pooooor thing! :(

  42. 42

Re: therealstinkweed – this is the stupidest thing i have ever heard someone say.

  43. 43

oh my god…. this is horrible. RIP :(

  44. 44

    Re: bellebeexo

don't worry Bellebeexo - when it comes your time I won't waste a tear since I don't know you - you okay with that ?
It is a tradgedy - no matter who it is - you obviously lack compassion but fucktards usually do

  45. 45

That is so sad man…rest in peace………condolences to her family and friends :(

  46. 46

It's sad that she died, but come on, who the hell dies from a coyote??? I could understand if it was a pack of wolves or something. But coyotes? Really? Did she not kick and punch or anything?

  47. 47

does she wake up with a kiss

  48. 48

Re: dopemcee – Hey Guys..don't pick on him…He's clearly REALLY busy being a REALLY Dope MC to worry about people dying. Back to his Mickey Mouse portable 45lp player, playa…

  49. 49

I live in Cape Breton and the trail she was on is called "Skyline Trail". It is a very frequented hiking trail and almost everyone I know has taken it before. In this area it is very common to hike a trail like that by yourself. People here in Cape Breton love the outdoors and there are dozens of trails just like the one Taylor was on. It's easily comparable to someone in the city going for a jog in the park. It's just the norm.

  50. 50

Coyotes are absolutely nothing like dogs. They are wild, after all, and in this season they are more desperate for food. It is very rare for a coyote in this area to come out into the open. The the coyotes we have here are sometimes cross breeds with wolves and they are far more dangerous than just a coyote. It was a extremely terrible accident what happened to Taylor. Coyotes may not seem scary, but when you're having a calm hike on a popular trail and two wild animals come out of nowhere, you're not going to be able to defend yourself very well. Animals like coyotes thrive in those situations and hunt in groups. There's not way she could have defended herself. The coyotes here are not restricted to animal habitats. They do roam free and they are not having their habitat taken from them. Cape Breton is extremely environmentally conscious. I felt that people who are leaving some of these comments just don't understand the lifestyle here and it's upsetting to hear people call her "stupid", when she's more than likely been doing this all her life.

  51. 51

    Re: dopemcee
Wow, you have the guys to say good riddance to someone who just died tragically?? Shame on you, lets see how you'd feel if it was someone YOU knew. Its not a fucking joke.

    RIP.

  52. 52

to everyone saying negitive comments you are fucking horrible people and it should of been you

  53. 53

my hometown finally lands on the map.. and it's because of our killer wildlife.. oye. poor girl.

  54. 54

Re: dopemcee – you're a sad sad miserable human being. for someone to make comments like that needs serious psychological help.

  55. 55

Re: KyleMacPhamous – Agreed. People shouldn't hypothetically make up scenarios. We don't know why this happened. Maybe they will find out maybe they don't. Either way, she was a very talented, lovely artist and PERSON. People forget this was someone's baby!!!

  56. 56

being from Nova Scotia… this is very sad.. cant believe this happened! … :(

  57. 57

this is horrible, its all over the news in Canada.

You failed to mention a couple important points…the PROVINCIAL park was in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was on vacation with her family.
And she was supposedly hiking alone with her IPOD IN! Which is dangerous in many ways… whenever hiking alone you need to be completely aware of your surroundings

  58. 58

I found this news out last night and its such an awful way to die…What i learned today was tht full breed coyates wont harm a human, but its the coyates that are mix with a dog or wolf that will attack humans….anyways my heart goes to her friends n family..RIP

  59. 59

Oh, tragic! Lovely girl. Prayers of strength for her family.
    .
So odd, coyotes are usually easily scared off.

  60. 60

This is horrible! I heard about it yesterday, and made me think twice about going on runs by myself. I know abot of people who've come eye to eye with bears or other animals, but never have I heard of someone being killed by a coyote! I swear, it seems like they've been getting bigger and meaner! I live in British Columbia and see alot of wild life, but not so many in a park where theres usually people around. And this is why you should NOT feed wild animals. When you feed them, they obviously think it's alright to be around, and relate humans to food!

  61. 61

Re: misiz_sjmxo – IF you're referring to where the attack occurred it wasn't in Halifax. Capre Breton Highlands National Park was accurate.

  62. 62

Re: TexasBadBoy – SOMEWHAT AGREE AND YOU ARE FROM TEXAS, WHERE IM FROM. BUT I AM DEFINETLY NOT CONSERVATIVE ONE LITTLE BIT, COWBOY.

  63. 63

    Re: misiz_sjmxo – :
Just to clarify…Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia…Cape Breton is a part of Nova Scotia but at the northern tip (an island of it's own). She was attacked in Cape Breton, not Halifax!

  64. 64

I wish to express sincere condolences to this woman's circle of loved ones. r.

I don't want to go into detail; as I do not want to detract from the loss that this family has suffered. Coyotes are scavengers and do not hunt in packs. Coy dogs demonstrate this behavior. Sadly; many of these dogs are "releases" from pit fighting rings and thus are extremely dangerous if let go into the wild. It is tragic. Do not blame Mother Nature. Coyotes do not do this. Pit fighting dogs who might share some phenotypic characteristics of the canis lupus family do. I have a dog named Honey that is now on guard duty in Guelph. SHE and I could walk the woods together and find these animals. I can use a blow-gun to tranquilize them but I would rather be accompanied by a vet that I know has this skill. Honey is currently stationed to guard some young women in Guelph and will not leave this post until she is able to. Then, we can go and track these very dangerous animals.

  65. 65

"good riddance" is what you say about a person you hate & desperately want out of your life. Hopefully you're not saying it in regards to their death. But who says it about a person they've never heard of? Her music "probably sucks" and "good riddance".
You're a dumbass. When you get over the mental maturity of a 12 year old, grow up, have childen' etc., maybe you'll have some compassion. But right now you just sound like a brainless, immature idiot who thinks they're ballsy from behind a computer screen. Dope MCs don't post BS on PerezHilton.com

  66. 66

    @dopemcee you have no soul

  67. 67

    Re: FemaleFilmMajor
You sound like a moron. I live in SoCal and coyotes attack humans and aniamls here. I saw one roaming around early one morning while I was driving to work. They look like dogs but they are NOT tame, they are wild animals who are hungry and looking for food. They usually hide in bushes and jump on their prey. I would like to see YOU try to fight off a wild coyote. Grown men who are athletes have been attacked and killed by coyotes here. Grow up.

  68. 68

Re: deannamar – Wow sad!!! Disturbing! This is weird because we were just in Sunriver and my sis-in-law and i were bike riding through this HUGE meadow and my dad had seen a cougar out there so I spooked my sis in law by saying we needed to ride REALLY fast on our bikes because I didn't want to become a statistic! There were no other bikes out there and anything could have jumped us! Then to my shock I saw a single female runner out there and was like wow that is ASKING for it! Hey people even though it's as rare as being struck by lightening always remember that this girl probably said the same thing!

  69. 69

    Re: TexasBadBoy – MORON.

  70. 70

that's so awful, coyotes usually stay far away from humans, unless the human is like a baby…they must have been really desperate, that sounds like the most horrible way to go.

  71. 71

Re: think again – oh dont get me wrong it is a shame and all, and i dont care if you 'shed a tear'. its like madeline mccan, everyone cares all of a sudden, just cos shes cute, and this girls famous.

  72. 72

That's SO SAD! What a horrible way to go

  73. 73

Re: dopemcee – wow you are a patetic person, you realise that right? Pretty sure she meant something to someome, how would you feel if someone said that about someone you cared about.

  74. Mamfa says – reply to this

    74

im from cape breton, i hake that trail every summer. its a very popular spot, and i was shocked when i heard there was an attack. they must have been starving or young were nearby. and there are reports that wolves and coyotes are crossbreeding in that area.though i am not in anyway blaming her, a young girl from out of town shouldnt have been hiking alone. very sad.

  75. 75

Re: MsDashira – Coyotes can either hunt as a scavenger or in a group, usually consisting of 2 coyotes. It is dependent on the situation whether they use one or the other option. They have also been known to hunt in packs when attempting to take down larger prey.

  76. 76

Wow - what a sad and freaky way to die. You hear about coyotes attacking small dogs (ie, Jessica Simpson's Daisy) but not people! Sounds more like something a mountain lion would do. WTF?

  77. 77

Re: bellebeexo – dont worry, when you die nobody will give a fuck

  78. 78

Re: dopemcee – i hope something like this happens to you..like whens someone cracks open your skull for posting stupid comments!!idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!

  79. 79

After reading some comments. It explains a lot if the coyotes in the area are often cross breeds w/ wolf. Still strange, but still very sad and tragic none the less.

  80. 80

Holy fuck! I live in NWT, Canada….. We have LOTS of Coyotes/Wolves/Bears/Lynxes here…

  81. 81

That is awfull. I don't hike on my own property alone or I take my pistol. The only animal I have not seen is a bear. We have coy-dogs which can be viscous to say the least. My thoughts go out to her family.

  82. 82

she has lipstick on her teeth

  83. 83

some of you people are just horrible.
its not always easy to scare off coyotes. odds are they were cross breeds. and if i remember right, one had to be killed cause it tried to attack the cops ( i could be wrong here but it was something along those lines)
Re: bellebeexo – cause she was famous?? im from toronto and had never heard of her…so i dont think her "fame" had anything to do with it.

  84. 84

Re: TexasBadBoy – wait is that a joke? because i think you should of researched that before you posted it. because if it's not a joke then you sound an awful lot lot a moron. i'll let you figure out on your own what else animals give to our enviorment… its like a fun pop quiz for you!!! just like in school…. ready set learn!

  85. 85

This is HORRIBLE. And dopemcee, go fuck yourself. Karma's a bitch! RIP, Taylor.

  86. 86

what?? thats crazy I didnt know coyotes hunted or attacked in packs

  87. 87

That's terrible…I can't imagine how terrifying that would be… May she rest in peace…

  88. 88

Thats so sad. Im from Cape Breton NS and you NEVER hear of anything happening like that:( soooo sad!

  89. 89

Re: TexasBadBoy – i seriously hope you're joking. if not, you should have been the one attacked by coyotes, not this girl.

  90. 90

This is awful. My heart goes out to her family, who must be just shocked.
I live in the Yukon and the coyoties here do NOT normally breed with wolves. If the coyotes in Cape Breton are breeding with wolves it means that the populations of both species are on the brink because it is NOT natural behavior. To be clear - I am NOT agruing that it could not happen, I am saying that the reason behind that being a "normal" type thing for that community does not point to environmentally friendly practises as claimed by a resident. If coyotes and wolves are breeding its because they do not have enough land/resources/individuals to maintain their natural state as individual species. Coyotes rarely hunt in packs larger than 2-3. They are more like foxes than wolves.
NEVER walk in the wilderness alone with any sort of mp3 etc. You need to be alert at all times.
This is tragic, as it could have been prevented. In the Yukon, most people do not go into the woods without a bear bell/bear spray/gun/dog. Even if it just to go for a walk.

  91. 91

When animals get accustomed to human prescence, they lose their fear and are more prone to approach/attack.This route she was on seems to be used rather frequently. I would not be suprised if the coyotes were defending a den site or something of a similar nature to cause them to snap at the proximity of humans. Or rabies, but I imagine they would have mentioned they were testing the corpse for that to determine of others are in danger of being attacked as well.

  92. 92

oh my gosh that is horrible!

  93. 93

that is very upsetting as people heard her screams but no one was able to help so sad to look at her photo and see life and to imagine her in her last hours probably scared out of her mind….condolences for her family

  94. 94

From lookin at most of the commentors on this post I see that Canadians sure az hell know how to really stick up for eachother.

  95. 95

Well…you have to admit that this is a quite silly way to die

  96. 96

This is so crazy! When I watched it on the news, it really scared me. I live in the northern area of Cape Breton and where my house is we see Coyotes quite often (for example: they have been on my back step before!)… So this case really is horrible and I send my sympathys to her family and friends because I know that these animals are truly agressive and it was not her fault!

  97. 97

it is even more tragic that Perez - after his tasteless comments about Michael Jackson´s death - has only one phrase to copy and paste when someone dies…

  98. 98

My god, all the reporting on this, I'm sure this singer would've loved to have this attention when she was alive

I'm from Nova Scotia, and it's a shame we only get in the news when something bad happens

  99. 99

    Re: misiz_sjmxo
She was touring…not with her family
and she was not in Halifax, but Cape Breton
