This Is It?! Jackson Film Debuts To Less-Than-Stellar Numbers On First Full Day!

Filed under: Film Flickers > Michael Jackson

thisisitposter__opt1.jpg

While impressive for any other release, the $7.4 million earned domestically from the Michael Jackson film This Is It on Wednesday was disappointing!

Reviews have been favorable and the film is expected to reach the $40 million mark in its first five days. And abroad it's doing even better! It garnered $12.7 million in its first day of release.

But, due to the high expectations - Sony may be disappointed!

There's no word from the studio whether the two-week engagement will be extended.

CNN and yahoo say the film is breaking records and that is already the highest- grossing film in October. I still remember your comments when Michael was rushed to the hospital. You title your note "cold heart or cold feet?" saying it was all set up so that Michael wouldn't perform in the UK.

You obviously don't like him but that's irrelevant. The movie and the CD are already in the number one spot respectively. There's no stopping Michael. Sorry.

  5. 5

I've placed money on them announcing it will be extended. I can't wait till it's out of theaters so I don't have to see the stupid commercials anymore

Does anybody know what percentage of the profits go to his children?

  10. 10

Why did they think a dead tranny has-been child molester had more fans than a live one?

  11. 11

I wish he'd let us rest in peace. I'm so fucking sick of Michael Jackson, his fucked up disaster of a family, and the twatwaffles that are preying on his dead carcass' fame.

  12. 12

    Re: lovers
MJ overrated??? UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE MILLENIUM!!!!!!!! you 90's kids don't realise what MJ did. He's the only artist who could do all genres and do it good! No Elvis, No Beatles, no Sinatra nobody was as versatile as him…..

  14. 14

I think it should be called "This Is Shit".

  15. 15

I heard this film is in 3-D. It's almost like MJ reaches out and grabs you. Grabs you in the crotch.

This issue is complex and it is too early to be declaring it a financial success of failure.
I still think the international take may eclipse the domestic take which never happens.
Wait until the weekend is over.

Lovely movie. Am planning to see it again. He was truly gifted and such a kind soul.

  22. 22

This is the only place where I have read that the numbers were 'disappointing'. Those are huge numbers in general, even moreso considering a Wednesday open.

  23. 23

    Two words…WHO CARESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. 24

    THAT ISNT DISSAPOINTING

  25. 25

  27. 27

    saw it yesterday…loooovvvveeeeeeeddd itttt

  28. 28

I've always said you were a liar Piggy Sissy, to make any point you wanted. But generally, you skirted the line. This is outright LYING instead of fact checking. —-The movie studio said the film, which shows the late pop star rehearsing for a series of comeback concerts before his death in June, made $7.4 million in the United States and Canada, and another $12.7 million internationally.—- That's TWENTY million, times that by 5 days and you are looking at $100 MILLION. PAST expectations… geesh. Is simple math too much for Piggy Sissy now?

  29. 29

Didn't this premier on a wednesday? It would have made more sense for a friday or weekend release if they wanted such big numbers. some wouldn't go on opening only because thye feared it being packed.

  36. 36

I'll passsss…All MJ'outttt. I people over seas like MJ more the in the US. Even David Hasselhof has fans overseas for his singing skills. All you people claiming he was the best, there is no such thing. Everything is always changing and new standards are being set. there is never one best at anything. The business works like this…They promote an artists as a legend and then you go out and buy their work or see them… Michael was not too relevant in these new times but he could have gone on and remained a steady force like Quincy Jones behind the scenes…..This is the ultimate example that fame does not bring you happiness, most of his fears were caused by his ego trying to match or out do his last project. Time catches up with you and the sound of the day moves on in different directions..Instead of disciplining himself and following Deepak Chopra or any of his spiritual teachers directions he tried to take the easy way out with drugs.

  37. 37

Those numbers are hardly less-than-stellar, you fat fuck. The film will easily make back the $60 mil Sony paid for it in 2 weeks, if that.
    You're a fucking retard, Perez.

  38. 38

i agree with how all u 90s kids say u dont like michael jackson. he was before your time and you are obviously all too stupid and into britney and miley and nsync etc to understand what a genius this man was. he was a GENIUS and the greatest entertainer to have ever lived.

  39. 39

shut it perez. the movie opened on a wednesday and is hardly bad numbers. already 500 pre-sold out theaters in north america.

  40. 40

I don't like how Sony is pushing so hard with the advertisements. Those who plan on going have already made up their minds and are going. I went Wednesday night and even though the theater was not sold out it was packed with just a few seats left. I saw it in IMAX and it was amazing. Most of the people I know are either going this weekend or just don't want to see it. I think it will eventually do well. The DVD sells will be great as well. Not sure about the soundtrack because most of us have his number ones already.

  41. 41

I LOVED IT ! THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT !

  42. 42

Just wanted to post that I went to see This Is It on the 29th and absolutely loved it. I've always been a huge Michael Jackson fan, but what really got me about the rehersal footage was the way Michael interacted with all the dancers and directors and everyone involved in putting the show together. It really would have been such and amazing show, and I believe this film really did a fantastic job at portraying how sincere Michael was about helping the planet, truly adoring his fans, and wanting to give his fans a final awe-inspiring show. Despite his 'untouchable' image, he really was a down-to-earth, humorous, and loveable person. It's just so sad that his life was taken much too soon.
