Angela Lansbury Gets A Little "Help"
Filed under: Broadway Babies > Old People
If you want to hate on Angela Lansbury, you're no friend of ours!
Sure she is getting senile and perhaps a little cranky in her advanced age, but we don't care! As long as she is still breathing, we want to see her on Broadway.
Some people were none to pleased to learn that Angela had a little helper in her ear while performing in the play Blithe Spirit this past year. In order to make it through her Tony Award-winning performance, Angela wore a carefully hidden ear piece, so someone could feed her lines, as her memory is not so good always anymore.
So much for ginkgo biloba.
But Angela defends her deception, and we support her, as she explains:
"It's not something you ever want to do, but if we're going to play important roles at our age, where our names are above the title on the marquee, we're going to ask for some support if we need it."
Amen!
Broadway legends are never questioned for their genius!
Now, if Sienna Miller was pulling this shenanigan, we would be in an uproar!

…maybe the little queen who is married to horseface could use it also.
I absolutely cannot STAND this lady. She just looks annoying. And she is a HORRIBLE actress.
I love her coz I heard a story about her years ago that always stuck. Evidently her son used to have a serious drug problem and she not only left her acting job to save him, but she left the country with him. That is true unconditional love. So, love to you sweet Angela.
"as her memory is not so good always anymore" wth? Who writes this shit?
who would want to be a friend of yours??
The new play starring Matthew Broderick has pushed back its opening by a week after a problem-plagued first preview that included its star NEEDING A PROMPTER in the front row to assist him with his lines.
Messages posted on various theater Web sites said the actor called out nearly a dozen times for lines during the Monday performance of the three-hour play written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan.
New Group artistic director Scott Elliott says "The Starry Messenger" will now open Nov. 23.
The play about an astronomy teacher's affair with a younger woman had been scheduled to open Nov. 16 at the small Acorn Theatre on 42nd Street.
Matthew Broderick is 47 years old…don’t knock Angela Lansbury, who is 84.
Re: msloriga – You are a moron.
Re: litzie – …exactly.
Aging sucks. Love Ms. Lansbury though. She's an icon!
Frankly I just glad she is still with us. She is the only original member of the movie Dorian Grey! I hear they are doing a re-make. Hope she can make a cameo appearance. She sure did leave LA as both her kids had drug problems. She took them back to Ireland where she is from. And that is the last we heard of her kids. Kudos for even being able to use a little help.
What a wonderful actress the last of her kind! I am saying it now while she can still get her roses. Bless you Angela!
Love Angela. x
why would you or anyone else even bring this up?
pop stars don't sing a single lick at their concerts anymore and you wanna expose a woman who is at least 100 for using an ear-piece prompter?
are you fucking mad?
Re: Paris France – …great post. She also unceremoniously dumped from her long standing TV show and handled it with grace and class.
WHEN SHE WALKS PAST THE GRAVE YARD THEY CHASE HER WITH SHOVELS…………
"Some people were none to pleased…"
Aww, that's so cute. You're letting your little underaged Vietnamese rent boy make posts for you again! You're such the humanitarian, Perezeritohellokitty!
(here's a hint: to, too, and two are NOT the same words…)
She's a classy lady. A real star. Great to see her still working. That said, some of the plot-lines in Murder She Wrote were shocking! Total bollocks!
Angela is neither senile nor cranky. She is a true professional and loved by millions. Shame on you for saying that. Looking forward to seeing her on stage again and very glad she continues to work.
Re: msloriga – you are a douche.
Re: karencarpenter – Hey Karen! Yeah, I remember that one. She is a classy lady! Have fun tonight!
She must have got her breasts lifted a hundred times.
Being a theater actress, this would have helped so many of my actors. Learning an entire play, is HARD. But I did it, and I understand at her age. I think it's a great idea for certain actor/actress who need help. I cannot count how many times I had to jump in and help an actor out b/c they forgot their lines. People being assholes on here; go learn an entire play-infront of people-and then you judge.
Re: tellall – Cee U Next Tuesday
Doesn't matter if someone was feeding her lines, she was still the one who delivered them in the end.
Weren't you just complaining about how old Anthony Hopkins is for his possible role in "Thor?"
With "friends" like you, she doesn't need enemies.
Love Angela Lansbury- I don't care whether or not she has her lines feed to her, she's in her 80s and is still has the energy to go on stage most nights. Go her! most popstars (in their 20's) lip synch so whats wrong with a great older actress having a little help- if the audience can't see it and keeps the production looking professional. (She seems like an awesome person, and I have a lot of love her her- i was brought up on the Court Jester)
i hated angela lansbury why??? cuz when i was a kid she's be ending USA network just as WWF began. And that was a frustrating 5 minutes cuz they always solved the murder and left me with no element of surprise (perez wrote that)
That's a nice thing to say Perez. Very nice.
I knew you had it in you.
Love love love Angela - it's 64 years since she was ominated for her first Oscar - how amazing is she!!!
Re: Paris France – Angela was born in London - she has a house in Ireland but that doesn't make her Irish
So what. She is annoying but what ever it takes to give a good performance.
just to defend Matthew Broderick, that wasn't entirely his fault. The writer had rewritten the majority of the script 4 times that week, as well as rewriting parts of it DURING the performance, nearly every time Matthew was off-stage the writer would hand him a rewrite.
She is a pro and a great actress. Hat's off to her for still getting out there and being on stage. Great to see her looking so healthy at her age she look's happy and great. Again hat's off to you Angela!!! You deserve a bow….
God willing…all of you will be old one day…then you will understand! She is a great lady.
Senile and a perhaps a little cranky??? You've spent enough time with her to know that??? That ones memory may not be waht it used to be has nothing has nothing to do with being senile. Picture Perez going, DUH.
I don't see anything wrong with it. She's got a point…it would be really distracting for her to have kept hesitating and stumbling over forgotten lines. It would have disrupted the whole flow of the play.
This woman is a legend, and should be treated as nothing less. This just goes to show what an amazing and dedicated artist she is. She is in her 80's, but is still delivering award winning performances. As a true artist that always puts her audience first, she reluctantly agrees to having this devise to help her remember lines she may otherwise have trouble with. Why? Because she is, and has always been, dedicated to delivering the best possible performance to her audience. She doesn't want to let anyone down by stumbling or forgetting any lines. That is a true professional at work. If only our modern crop of hack actors could take even a piece of the class this lady has always shown, we could recapture some of the golden age of Hollywood talent. My hats off to you dear lady, with all my love.
