Wow!

For the first time since 1982, an American man has won the New York City Marathon!

Meb Keflezighi
completed the marathon in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 15 seconds! That is FAST!

Keflezighi won a silver medal in the 2004 Olympic games and in the same year came second in the NYC Marathon.

The Eritrean-born runner became an American citizen in 1998.

Congratulations on the win!

There is nothing wow about this. He was born and raised in Africa. He is not a natural born citizen. If Ryan Hall would have won it would be a big deal.

    5. 5

      Wonderful!

Re: St00p!d Bitchassness – Our 'whole immigration thing' works well, as long as its done legally everyone is welcomed.

The elite marathoners have the best bodies!

    8. 8

So he's not REALLY American then…

    9. 9

      so…. technically he's NOT american

Re: buck – IN YOUR OPINION YEAH. AND ACTUALLY IT WAS A JAB AT THE RIGHT WING REPUBLICANS WHO TO BE HONEST I THINK WOULD LIKE TO THROW EVERYONE WHO ISN'T WHITE, STRAIGHT AND AMERICAN BORN OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND HAVE A BIG GIANT ORGY WITH EACH OTHER. BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION, I COULD BE WRONG BUT I'M KINDA SURE THAT I'M NOT. ITS JUST KINDA FUNNY THE SECOND SOMEONE WHO ISN'T AMERICAN BORN DOES SOMETHING GOOD THEY'RE PURELY AN AMERICAN NO MENTION OF WHERE THEY'RE FROM ORGINALLY BUT THE MOMENT THEY DO SOMETHING BAD THEY'RE [INSERT COUNTRY HERE] BORN.

    11. 11

ha ha, ERITREAN BORN IS WHAT YOU CALL AN aMERICAN? plEAAZEE perez!

    12. 12

He's American. Period. Came here in junior high, graduated from high school and college here, and has been a naturalized citizen since '98. And a proud one at that…moreso than a lot of other American born athletes who act like babies or spoiled brats when on the world stage. It was a great sight to see him coming in to break the tape in his USA jersey that he doesn't HAVE to wear, but chooses to wear, waving to the crowd. Read up on Meb, his family and life story before labeling him "not American."

      Re: pretty_licious
RUDE!!! He is "technically" American because he is a citizen of this country. Just because someone wasn't born here doesn't make them any less American than someone who was. He chose to get citizenship here, took an oath, and now he's 100% American.

      Re: NumberPronk – exactly

    15. 15

When you work hard enough, this is truly a Land of Opportunity! Way to go, Meb!

    16. 16

Robin Quivers will be so proud!!! That is her pet country…..

    17. 17

FOR GOD SAKES……………..this guy was not born here in America, he is not a true american.

    18. 18

Sorry but I don't think that makes this historic. He is an american on paper but not by birth nor was he raised here.

    19. 19

Re: *K.Fo.* – No that makes him Eritrean-American. Becoming a citizen is adding something not subtracting something. I wasn't born here, I came here when I was young as well, and I consider myself Russian-American. Taking some classes here and living here doesn't take away from the culture you were born and raised in. It's not the true american. It doesn't mean the two aren't equal, they just mean different things.

    20. 20

Uh, he is still African. lol
      Nothing has changed.

    21. 21

I love the retarded comments like "technically he's not American". What kind of crap is that!? He's American like all of you, even if he was born elsewhere. Why should he be a second class citizen?
What about Arnold Schwarzenegger!? He wasn't born in America either, yet people consider him as an American.
And before you make such comments, maybe think of the fact that our ancestors came from Europe, if anything the Indians are the real NATIVE Americans.

    22. 22

Re: TheRussianOne – What you consider yourself has no bearing on anyone but yourself. Again-read what I said, as you're missing my point….it's about the morons who wouldn't pass a citizenship test themselves if they truly believe he's not American or that the only way one can call themselves an American is by birth. And, he was indeed raised here, arriving in the states at age twelve, brought by parents who fled a war-torn nation and sacrificed greatly to give their kids a fighting chance here.

As far as what Meb considers himself…he does hold dual citizenship like many others who have helped build our nation of immigrants. When he won his Olympic silver medal in '04 and took the NYC title yesterday, he ran with "United States" following his name only-and runs in a USA singlet…so that is how he represents himself in competition.

    23. 23

HE IS NOT AMERICAN!!!!!! NO AMERICAN BORN ATHLETE IS GOING TO WIN A MARATHON. I HATE IT WHEN THESE DAMN ATHLETES REPRESENT A COUNTRY THEY WERE NOT BORN IN. I THINK THAT IT IS FINE TO LIVE IN OTHER COUNTRIES BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO EVENTS LIKE THE OLYMPICS AND SUCH, PEOPLE SHOULD PARTICIPATE FOR THE COUNTRY IN WHICH THEY WERE BORN. HE DID NOT LEARN TO BE AN ATHLETE IN THE U.S. UNGRATEFUL PEOPLE IS WHAT THEY ARE.

    24. 24

But you americans would have preferred it if it was actually some white dude
who was actually born in the states. Cmon, you can't even stomach a half black
president, so the rest of the world knows where you are coming from

    25. 25

Stay strong and positive bg! Everything is going to turn around and before you know it amibwy

    26. 26

Meb, you are awesome and embody the TRUE American spirit - battling back from injury to be a champion and pointing to USA on your jersey while giving the thumbs up for the last mile shows your strength, determination and your pride in your country - it brought tears to my eyes and had my kids cheering and begging me to go for a run with them that afternoon. You are an inspiration!!

    27. 27

THAT'S AN AMERICAN NAME IF I EVER HEARD ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    28. 28

um…i don't care where he's now a citizen - his name is Meb Keflezighi, he's not american. frankly, i'm not american either, even though i'm technically a citizen, but i also don't ever claim to be one.

    29. 29

He's obviously used to being chased!
