So Much For Limited Engagement! This Is It Is Here To Stay!
Not that we didn't see this coming as soon as they said it would only run for 2 weeks, but still.
It was just announced that the Michael Jackson documentary, This Is It, will remain in theaters through Thanksgiving weekend.
In a press release that was probably drafted up weeks ago, the chairman of Sony Pictures, Jeff Blake, explained:
"In just 5 days, Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT has become the highest grossing concert film of all time and we are elated by the response to this special film by fans, critics and moviegoers from all over the world. With this kind of global response, it’s clear that the motion picture deserves an extended run and we are going to do everything we can to make the film available to everyone who wants to see Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT on the big screen."
Judging by this weekend's turn-out, we think Jeff and the suits over at Sony are really over-estimating the interest in this movie.

The movie was amazing!People were riveted to the screen right until the end and it was certainly going to be the best concert ever.This was Halloween weekend and many people didn't have a chance to see the movie ,so I'm glad they decided to extend it.Everybody should see this movie.It will make people feel priviledged to be living during the time of such a legend.

It certainly made more than most people had expected it would, and in only 5 days, so pretty impressive to say the least.

I'm not a huge MJ fan, but i do like some of his music and respect what he did musically and was saddened to hear he passed. I really want to see the movie.

I live in California but was in the Washington, D.C., area for a conference last week, and it hadn't sold out there . . . If it didn't sell out with all the Black folks there, I wonder how much Perez could really be overestimating? I think he is right. Sony probably got the idea to do the short engagement from Iron Maiden's movie, which sold out everywhere, but was also available on t.v. the next week.
of course it is here to stay. Michael Jackson is only going to die once and so they are going to milk this saga for every cent they can muster. Duh.

"This is it" is so appropriately titled since it is a subtle reference to what sheer magnificence is and what genius looks like. This was a rare opportunity to see genius at work. Michael Jackson has elevated the bar as to what all artists should strive to become and their goal should be to surpass MJ. Although their is no one on the horizon with that kind of natural born talent it would be nice to see an artist try and achieve maginificence!

When talking about movies there is the domestic gross and the international gross. These numbers are combined to make worldwide total.
In the case of This Is It, it has made 68% internationally and 32% domestically. The numbers game was played by PH this morning by only reporting the domestic total and then declaring it a disappointment. It should be noted, however that all American media is in the habit of every Monday only reporting the domestic grosses, but the fact is the film made 103 million worldwide when final tallys were done today.
Other Facts to clear things up:
–The film is not the highest grossing film in 5 days either domestically or internationally.
–The film is the highest grossing concert film internationally. It will need to and will make enough money to beat Woodstock's and Hanna Montana's domestic takes of 50 million and 68 million respectively, to set the domestic concert film record.
–The film has a decent shot at breaking the highest grossing documentary record but to do so it needs to gross 222 million worldwide and/or 119 million domestically thus beating Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911.
The film is, after only 5 days, the number 31 movie of the year worldwide (ahead of Surrogates but behind Bride Wars). It will rapidly move up that list but to crack the top 15 it will need to make over 300 million worldwide.
It may have a small decline this weekend because the World Series and Halloween interfered with the movie's first week. Because folks though this was a two week only film it may be front loaded with most of it's viewers in it's first and second weeks.
This is a film that is difficult to predict on many levels because of it's extraordinary nature. This includes it's possible/probable nomination for Best Documentary (only other documentary filmmakers though are allowed to place it in nomination which works against the film) or a possible Best Film nomination now that 10 films will be nominated (all academy members nominate in this category).
Nobody should not see the film because they are against the family or Sony. The deal as I understood it is Sony paid 60 million for the film and has already got that pack. Sony then will get paid for prints, advertising, and distribution. This may already have occurred in the first 5 days. The remaining profits, potentially hundreds of millions more will be split 90% to the estate and 10% to AEG. I interpret the estate to mean Katherine and most importantly the children, so the brothers, LaToya, and the father should not see any direct profits from the film.

I saw it already, I'd see it again AND would even buy the DVD if it ever comes out. It's THAT good!!! When I saw it, the theater was packed! And I tell you what, when it was over, nobody wanted to leave. Practically everyone stayed in their seats until the last bit of credits scrolled up and we got to see the dedication to his children. Yes it was THAT good and everyone was in awe!
This Is NOT Not NOT it is the highest flop movie of all time. it will not be as big as Titanic.
