Where The Wild Things Are, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, and now this one! They're going to go after all the familiar favorites from our childhood!

The beloved Berenstain Bears books by Jan and the late Stan Berenstain are now going to be made into a full-length feature film and it will be a mix of live-action and computer animation.

Shawn Levy, the director of Night at the Museum, is heading the project acquired by Walden Media, the company behind the Narnia franchise. He says of the project:

"People read them as kids and can now read them to their kids. Any piece of culture that proves that enduring has something special in its DNA. It's warm-hearted comedy about family, and a different kind of family. I'd like the film to be un-ironic about its family connections but have a wry comedic sensibility that isn't oblivious to the fact that they're bears. The comedy comes from this bear family coexisting in a more recognizably real world."

They're hoping for a release date near the end of 2011.

Walden Media CEO Michael Bostick also revealed that the normally 2-D characters will be getting "makeovers" which will be a "slightly modern spin on their look."

Oh, no! Remember what happened to Dora the Explorer and Rainbow Brite when they got their makeovers?!

Just as long as they don't put Sister Bear in stripper boots a la Noah Cyrus, we may be able to get on board with this.

Are U looking forward to a Berenstain Bears movie?

GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! would it kill a production company to do a fucking original screenplay! I am sick to death of all these remakes! its like an entire generation of filmmakers have no ambition, imagination or shame, and they just make millions of dollars off of crap other people created. This needs to stop! I worry because I want to be a filmmaker and i don't want to keep reproducing stuff we have all seen before! Its obnoxious and unoriginal. I can't stand it!!!!! However, I will give credit to Spike Jonez because Where the Wild Things Are was an AMAZING piece of filmmaking w/ the spirit of the book but a story unlike anything you'll ever experience! I have never seen anything like it (and i've seen thousands and thousands of movies, new and old, mainstream and indy, American and international, good and bad) If you haven't seen it, do it now, while its in theaters, you will not regret it i promise. but i would skip Berenstain Bear, in fact please skip it and lets collectively, as a society, send a message to the big wigs in hollywood, that we are not going to be spoon fed this crap any longer!!!

Aww…childhood memories. I still have my books from when I was a little girl. They helped me learn to read!

    4. 4

      YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant wait!!

    5. 5

YESSS!!!!! Though im not excited about the make-over idea. They'll probably make the cubs into some sex-crazed tweens. fingers crossed that that doesnt happen…

To FemaleFilmMajor - I feel your pain, but Hollywood is not interested in originality. They are interested in money. Appealing to the childhood nostalgia of multiple generations is a warm fuzzy money maker. Support independent film. That's where true art and originality can be found.

hahahaa! omg childhood flashback! do it!!

      i love those bears!

    8. 8

PUKE! I absolutely loathe those stupid ass bears on Sesame Street. Their voices are SO ANNOYING.

My kids used to love these books, and they are both adults now. They are not really classic childrens books but they are fun and try to teach kids some good behavior without being preachy, so I think it's a good idea and I hope they do the books justice.

Oh no. This was my favorite book series as a child, and now my children love it. They are going to ruin them with their little 'makeover.' Damn Hollywood.

Re: SpiritGirl – Yes thats true, but indi films try too hard to be indi! a lot of the indi films i see today are super pretentious, film school 101 type films that are either over dramatic or purposely dry and uneventful as if they are saying fuck you to the whole Hollywood system. If the films were original and interesting they would be more popular because i know im not the only one sick of the remake crap. Thats not to say there aren't a few gems out there but indi is not necessarily the cure. Indi films share this 'thing' this 'sickness' im talking about….There's something wrong with this generation of American filmmakers indi and Hollywood…and I think it goes beyond money. I think it has to do with the ease in which people can get a hold of cameras and editing equipment , but I don't know what, i can't put my finger on it. Its something i can't put into words and its driving me crazy!

I probably wouldn't mind if I didn't have 2 kids and I had to watch the cartoon for years straight. I came out hating those bears.

    13. 13

      Re: minimilanocookie

Actually, I stand corrected. I was so wrapped up in my thoughts that I typed Sesame Street. They actually have their own show, (which incessantly plays in the background when my nephew is here) that my hatred of them clouded my mind when I was typing.

    22. 22

I really hope they don't mess it up!! I loved the Berenstain Bears!

    23. 23
