The elderly country western singer isn't too pleased with the ladies' fusion of country and pop music and recently accused them of "stealing their identity" and sullying it to make it into the mainstream.
George says:
“They’re definitely not traditional country music. It’s good to know that we still do traditional country music. Alan Jackson still does it, so does George Strait. We still have it, and there’s quite a few of us that are going to hope that it comes back one of these days."

George Jones has written dozens of hits and is respected and revered by actual country western MUSICIANS. That is what I grew up remembering and grew up being told. And Taylor is every bit of that! She tells a story in each and every one of her songs & she's a damn good songwriter at that. I beg to differ. I was raised on country music. Taylor and Carrie have their own sound, and their contribution to country music has been terrific! More people needed to get interested in country music because it's not just a genre that "rednecks" listen to. Carrie and Taylor did that by building a bridge between pop and country. HOWEVER, George has a point. Country has lost its identity in the process of trying to get a bigger demographic. BUT, that also goes for all music. I guess we just SEE it happening in country music, because this genre has never even been categorized with the likes of pop, hip hop, rock n' roll and punk…which tend to ALL be honored at the same awards shows.

It is true that Carrie and Taylor do not sing traditional country music (although Carrie has certainly embraced it more with her cover of Randy Travis' 'I Told You So' - a big hit - and her singing of Tammy Wynette's 'Stand By Your Man' at the Grand Ole Opry. There is room for everything in country music - the music Ricky Skaggs sings (bluegrass) sounds nothing like what George Jones sings (traditional), which sounds nothing like what Carrie Underwood sings (contemporary) - but it's ALL classified as 'country'. There's more than enough pie to go around, and if the public wants Carrie and Taylor (although I don't understand why because Taylor can't sing worth a damn) … I say the more the merrier.
