Hey, George Jones: We're sorry that no one really remembers who the hell you are, but that is no reason to hate on Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift!
The elderly country western singer isn't too pleased with the ladies' fusion of country and pop music and recently accused them of "stealing their identity" and sullying it to make it into the mainstream.
George says:
“They’re definitely not traditional country music. It’s good to know that we still do traditional country music. Alan Jackson still does it, so does George Strait. We still have it, and there’s quite a few of us that are going to hope that it comes back one of these days."
Yeah, we don't think either of those guys care and neither should you!
You and that chip on your shoulder need to head on back to the nursing home and just keep quiet.

Don't get me wrong. I like Taylor and Carrie, but they are not traditional country. They are like pop country. And you don't know a damn thing about country music if you think no one remembers George Jones.
There is nothing wrong with modernizing country and giving it a fresh sound….like say, Miranda Lambert, but I agree that it's getting out of hand. Artists like Taylor and Carrie are over-doing the pop stuff. If they are going to call themselves country and win country music awards they better sound pretty damn country, or they need to get out of the genre. It isn't fair to the artists who are trying to carry on the true country legacy and sound. It's completely unfair because giving country a pop sound gives these artists an advantage over all the others. (because pop is more popular) Hell, the only reason Taylor has made it as big as she has is because she has made her music so pop-ish to appeal to younger people. I think Jones was out of line saying these things to the media… old guy just wants some press. But I do agree with him for the most part. Though I love Carrie Underwood. Her voice is superb. However, do not get me started on Taylor Swift. She gives me a headache and should have never been called country in the first place.
You, whoever the hell you are, are an idiot. George Jones, was and still is amazing! Im 23yrs old. And I will take George Jones Classics anyday over these women. Not to say they are not good in their own ways, however, he's correct. Theyve gone mainstream, they are not country!

One George Jones is a legend. Carrie and Taylor are both good in what they do, but strongly influenced by the change in times and their labels. Also, George Jones still has a following and country has a lot more people into it than you would think obviously…you thought Garth Brooks wouldn't sell out, but he did….duh he is only one of the top selling country artists of all time and has performed all over the world because in the mid 90's before he retired he was at the top of his game, but you don't know country so you wouldn't know that.

George Jones is the grandfather of country music. Both of the girls he mentioned are VERY MUCH pop acts. They are both great artists but, do they really belong in country music? Not so much.

People pined for the horse, too, after cars evolved. It's the common lament of the older folks, and the circle of life has left George in the dust; albeit some very fine enjoyable classic country dust, for those who like.
Look..I have met George Jones a few times. He is old school country music. Of course he would make a comment like that. George Strait, Alan Jackson are pretty much traditional. Alot of people feel that country music has been popified. From his perspective it makes perfect sense to me. I however like the old & the newer styles. I respect him as an artist & feel that he has every right to state his opinion. He has influenced so many that to say negative things about him is a discredit to country music as a whole.
I have to agree with him. The "country" music nowadays is just pop/rock with a singer with a Southern accent.

A funny thing happened to country on its way to the future. It got enamored with Hollywood schmaltz and lost its way. What was once Nashville is now officially Hollywood East. Traditional country does still exist to some degree, but it is now called "Americana" or "Alt Country" or something like that and it doesn't sell gazillions of records like so-called Mainstream Country does. It's unfortunate that "Mainstream Country" has displaced traditional country, for traditional country is remarkably free of the BS that permeates all types of pop.
I am in my 30s and like millions of others agree with every word that Jones said. It is a joke to call the pop/soft rock/adult contemporary music that is being made today country. Why not give the new music a different name so that country music can remain country? Jones is an American icon and is respected and idolized by artists of many different genres. He has been making music for almost 60 years, and still continues to tour. People of all ages attend his concerts. The Taylor Swifts and Carrie Underwoods of the world will be very lucky to last 6 years.

He's right! When I lived in NC for a few years, I was exposed to country music, and loved it! {I am of course, a native New Yorker}. If you compare the music that is played in many country music stations to the ones we hear on MTV you will realize that Taylor Swift is no Leann Rhimes, or Jo Dee Messima. I love all types of music. But let's keep it real, Taylor and Carrie isn't country!
